The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team led NCAA Division III in both cumulative and average attendance during the 2021 season, drawing nearly 70,000 fans to Perkins Stadium for home games.

The Warhawks averaged a nation-leading 6,975 fans over 10 home games, including six in the regular season and four in the NCAA Playoffs.

The team’s total attendance of 69,754 was nearly 18,000 more than its closest peer and is believed to be the most in one season in school history, passing the 2016 team, which drew 51,459 fans.

UW-Whitewater has now finished among the top 10 in the nation in attendance in each of the last 15 seasons. Perkins Stadium’s unique atmosphere, highlighted in this video, includes fan tailgating, the “Cannon Guy” firing off the cannon after each Warhawk scoring play, one of the best bands in NCAA Division III under the direction of Dr. Glenn Hayes and a winning tradition that includes six national championships and 10 trips to the Stagg Bowl since 2005.

“I get the chills every time,” defensive lineman Mackenzie Balanganayi (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) said on the Inside Warhawk Athletics podcast in 2020 regarding the Perkins Stadium atmosphere. “It’s different anywhere else, you don’t get that anywhere else. You feel unbeatable.”

Former UW-W head coach Bob Berezowitz, who coached the Warhawks from 1985-2006, spoke of the fan experience for a 2020 story on the 50th anniversary of the venue.

“I feel UW-W has the best tailgating gathering in Division III football,” Berezowitz said. “I am so excited every Saturday to be at Perkins Stadium to see everyone getting ready for a great game. Attendance just keeps increasing each year.”

More than 11,000 fans walked through the Perkins Stadium gates three times during the 2021 season:

15,406 against UW-Platteville on Oct. 9 – ninth-highest single-game attendance in Division III history according to D3football.com (sixth highest on-campus attendance) and second-highest single-game attendance in program history
11,248 against UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 30 – ranks among the top 50 in single-game attendance in Division III history according to D3football.com
11,991 against UW-La Crosse on Nov. 6 – ninth-highest single-game attendance in program history and among the top 30 in Division III history according to D3football.com

UW-Whitewater’s three other regular season games each drew more than 7,000 fans:

7,423 against Carthage on Sept. 4
8,102 against Berry (Ga.) on Sept. 18
8,963 against UW-Stout on Oct. 2

Gymnasts Take on Waterford

The Whitewater Gymnasts took on Waterford in their last dual meet of the season on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.

Halee Peters had a great night as she took 2nd in All-Around with a score of 30.825. She stomped it in Vault, taking 1st place, took 2nd in Bars with her difficult routine, and had a career best score of 8.275 with her sassy Floor routine, which also earned her 2nd place. Halee tied for 3rd place on Beam with Makayla Bazeley. Makayla also had a strong night and placed in the top 8 for all the events, taking 5th in All-Around and 5th on her solid Bars routine.

Myia Cobbs showed everyone how tough of a competitor she is as she took on Bars for the first time ever. She also scored a season best on the Vault with a 7.25, tied her season best score on Floor, and competed in All-Around for the very first time, and scored a 23.30! We love seeing how much she has grown as a gymnast since the first meet! She meets every challenge head on and is a determined gymnast!

Miyu Takeda scored a season best on Vault as she continues to push herself to learn new skills.

The team heads to Platteville for their last invitational on Saturday, February 12th, and then will move on to Conference and Sectionals the following two Fridays. Wish them luck as they finish their season strong!

Whippet Boys Lose Two Heartbreakers

The Whitewater Boys’ Basketball Team competed in two hotly-contested games to begin the week. Unfortunately, they came up a little short in both, losing to Lake Geneva Badger, 41-39, on Monday, February 7th, and 62-48 to Beloit Turner on Tuesday, February 8th.

In Monday’s game, Lake Geneva scored the first two points, but that was their only lead of the first half, as Whitewater took control of the game with their aggressive 1-3-1 zone defense. The Whippets built a seven-point lead with five minutes left, but couldn’t increase it, as Badger closed the gap to 21-18 at the half. The second half was close throughout, with Whitewater keeping the lead until Lake Geneva hit a basket to take a 30-29 lead with 8 and a half minutes left. After that, it went back and forth until the end. With the score tied 39-39 and four seconds left, Badger center Nathan Buntrock broke free to score and win the game.

Whitewater was led by Jon Aron with 12 points, Wyatt Nickels with 8 points and 9 rebounds, and Arno Crowley with 7 points and 3 steals. Sam Brown also contributed 3 steals, as Whitewater stole the ball 10 times.

Tuesday’s game did not start well for the Whippets, as Beloit Turner built a 19-2 lead in the first 10 minutes of this make-up game. Whitewater’s offense finally kicked in, and with their aggressive defense getting steals (a total of 19 steals for the game), the Whippets stormed back. When Arno Crowley hit a 3 pointer at the end of the first half, the Turner lead was down to two, 31-29. Whitewater stayed close throughout the second half. Every time Turner would widen their lead, the Whippets would reel it back in. However, they couldn’t make that last run to take the lead, and with the score at 52-48 with two and a half minutes left, Turner scored the last 10 points for the final.

Whitewater was again led in scoring by Jon Aron with 12 points and Wyatt Nickels’ 5 rebounds. Arno Crowley had 8 points and 6 steals, and Ramon Wence had 4 steals (two of which were crucial to start Whitewater’s first half comeback.)

The Whippets next play at Jefferson on Thursday, February 10th.

Swimmers Compete in Conference Meet

The Whippets placed 7th in the Southern Lakes Conference Swim Meet with several best times and one medal winning performance on Saturday, February 5. All of our swimmers helped earn points towards our finish with only the Top 16 places scoring points.

Tyler Arnett

Zach Tomomitsu continues to race fast in the 100 Freestyle, going right on his season best time. He also raced hard in the 100 Backstroke, where he finished in the Top 16!

Tyler Arnett was able to take home a medal with his 3rd place finish in the 500 Freestyle. Tyler also swam two great anchor splits in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays, and had a 7th place finish in the 200 Freestyle, going a season best time.

Jack Hefty placed in the Top 16 in both of his individual events. He went a season best time in the 200 Individual Medley, and ended up going a season best 100 Freestyle, while leading off the 400 Freestyle Relay!

Miles Nickelsburg continues to improve his time in the 100 Backstroke, where he dropped 2.5 seconds of his previous best time, and was able to place in the Top 16!

Andrew O’Toole was able to place in the Top 16 in the 100 Breaststroke, and was right on his previous best time! He swam a really nice split in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Gymnasts Compete in Dodgeville Invitational

The Whitewater Gymnastics Team competed in a tough invitational on Saturday, February 5th, in Dodgeville, against 10 other teams. Our girls fought hard to have their highest team scores of the season on Beam, Floor, and overall!

Jackie Franco was told at the last minute that we needed her for Vault. Not only was she willing to step in – she got a season best score! Brooklyn Griswold had a season best score on her Floor routine, while Halee Peters tied her season best score on her Floor routine. Nola Coburn had a great Beam routine that earned her a season best score as well as her highest All-Around score of the season. She also tried out some new skills on Bars where she did a back hip circle on the high bar, upping her difficulty. Makayla Bazeley changed up her passes on her Floor routine by adding a front handspring into a roundoff back-handspring tuck to score her a season best score which contributed to her highest All-Around score.

Impressively, we had 4 out of 5 no fall Beam routines by Lexi Kuhnke, Brooklyn Griswold, Makayla Bazeley, and Halee Peters. This was by far our best day for the Whitewater girls on the Beam! We have been working really hard to achieve a lower percentage of Beam falls, and this meet was a success.

There is only one dual meet left for the season – in Waterford this Tuesday, February 8th. Then we will compete next Saturday, February 12th, in Platteville, for another invitational. After that, we are on to our post season meets.

Three Whippet Wrestlers Claim Conference Titles; Team Finishes Second

On Saturday, February 5, the Whitewater Wrestling Team traveled to Brodhead to participate in the 2022 Rock Valley Conference Wrestling Championships. This was a battle between the nine conference teams, each looking to win a team title, and individuals looking to be crowned champions.

Whitewater wrestled well throughout the day, with seven students achieving a medal for placing in the top three. The Whippets had five individuals in the championship matches, winning three of the five bouts. Marcus DePorter, Carter Friend, and Mason DePorter each earned their first conference championship, with all of them winning convincingly throughout the day. Marcus was the first to claim a championship, with a commanding 12-3 victory over his opponent from Turner. Friend then followed two weights later, wrestling a very controlled match, defeating his opponent from Evansville by a score of 9-3. Finally, Mason wrestled outstanding in his championship match, taking a commanding lead early, and never letting off the gas on his way to a 12-0 victory. This is a great accomplishment for these young men as a lot of hard work has been put into these championships and now they have their name etched in Whippet History.

Also reaching the finals for the Whippets included Jarvis Porcaro and Connor Friend. Each of these young men wrestled well all day, but came up short in the finals. Porcaro pinned his way to the championship match, before falling to his opponent from Evansville. Friend had an extremely exciting match in the semi-finals, avenging an earlier season loss, to win 5-4 to reach the championship. Connor came up short in the finals to a senior from East Troy, falling 6-0.

Bringing home the bronze medal for Whitewater were Aaron Porras and Leo Ortiz. Both of these students lost heartbreakers in the semi-finals, but came back and finished their day strong to bring home third place.

As a team, Whitewater came in Runner-Ups to a very good team from Evansville. The coaching staff is happy with the performance of the team, as they did give Evansville a run for part of the day, until they started to pull away in the final round.

The Varsity is now off until Saturday, when they travel to Jefferson to participate in the Regional Tournament. The Junior Varsity team closes out their season this week, as they travel to Clinton on Monday for the RVC JV Conference tournament and then travel to Badger High School on Tuesday to compete in their last tournament.

Whippets Fall to Jefferson in Girls’ Basketball

The Whitewater Girls’ Basketball Team traveled to Jefferson for a conference match up on Thursday, February 3. We played aggressively on defense but struggled to stop Jefferson’s Johnson in the paint in the first half, giving her 20 of her 24 points. At half we were down 20-28.

Danielle DePorter (file photo)

We kept the game close in the second half, holding Johnson to 4, but we needed to foul at the end and came up short, losing 39-51.

Nine Whippets contributed in scoring. Danielle DePorter led the Whippets with 12, going 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Kindyl Kilar contributed 7 points, going 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Gwen Truesdale added 5, Calli Grosinske scored 4, and Josie Treder contributed 3. Two points each were scored by Mayte Navejas, Aidyn Amundson, and Cali Kopecky.

Gymnasts Host Triangular with Co-op Teams

The Whippets Gymnasts took on their last home meet of the season in a triangular against Badger Co-op and Union Grove Co-op on Tuesday, February 1. We had some new skills performed along with a few season best scores to make it a great night! We had our highest team score of the year with 107.875.

Izzy Dieter and Nola Coburn both had season best scores on Bars while Myia Cobbs and Estefany Reyes-Saldana had season best scores and no fall routines on Beam. Nola also improved her All-Around Score with a 24.075.

Two of our girls tried the Vault for the very first time and scored quite well! We’re very proud of Miyu Tekeda and Jackie Franco for working so hard to be able to compete on the Vault! Adding these two vaults to our lineup improves our JV Team score, which scored nine points higher Tuesday night!

We had a great night of firsts. Beyond our two new vaulters showing their new skills, Lexi Kuhnke added a roundoff back handspring to her Floor routine, and her fans got crazy loud cheering for her. Maritza Vidales added a front handspring to her Floor routine, which was awesome to see. Makayla Bazeley added a 720 pirouette as well as a straddle jump to the end of one of her tumbling passes, to improve her difficulty in her Floor routine. We love seeing the girls incorporating new skills into their routines as they head into their post season meets.

Halee Peters got 3rd in All Around with a 31.95, 2nd on Vault with an 8.3, 5th on Bars with a 7.55, 5th on Beam with an 8.2, and 6th on Floor with a 7.9.

The Whitewater Gymnastics Team will be heading to Dodgeville on Saturday, February 5th, for an invitational, and then their last dual meet is next Tuesday, February 8th.
