Many of the Members of the Whitewater Whippets Boys Soccer Team
The Whitewater Whippets Boys Soccer team finished up the regular season this past Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Big Foot-Williams Bay. The Whippets picked up two goals in the first half, the first from a header from Cristian Reyes off of a corner kick from Colin Chenoweth and the second from a strike from Juan Cuellar with Marcos Contreras picking up the assist. Juan Cuellar notched the third goal of the night on a low, hard-driven corner kick that proved too difficult to handle by the keeper. Good defensive play by defensive midfielders and defensive back stopped most of the offensive pressure of Big Foot with goalkeepers Antwan Banda and Sergio Zuniga each stopping shots to pick up the clean sheet. The Whippets are in the state playoffs Thursday with an away game at Jefferson.
The Lady Whippet CC team competed in
the RVC championships on Thursday evening in perfect race
conditions. Freshman Sabrina Bomberg led the team to an 8th place finish
out of 10 teams. Her time of 24:37 secured 45th place. Sophomore Olive Coburn
turned in a time of 25:10, good enough for 48th place. This was close to
Olive’s best time of the year on what is a very challenging course. Morgan
Stillwagon was the team’s 4th runner in 55th and was also a few ticks of the
clock off of her personal best for the season.
The JV squad was led by Freshmen
Emma Weigel and Caelyn Caputo. These two pack run well together and catapulted
the team to a 6th place finish out of 10 teams. Both runners nearly ran a
personal best on this day. The program also celebrated senior night which
includes Rosie Aschenbrener, Jenna Lee and Morgan Stillwagon.
The group looks to recover from
today’s gutsy efforts and tackle the WIAA Sectional meet which will be hosted
again by Whitewater High School at UW-Whitewater on Saturday, October
26th.
Whippet CC boys were led by a strong
lead performer in Sophomore Gio Anello. Gio attained his second all-conference
honor in as many years, however, this race he earned first team all-conference
honors. His time of 17:25 was good enough for 6th place overall. Junior Trenten
Zahn also secured all-conference honors by placing 11th, his third all conference
honor, this being a second team recognition. The boys were then tightly packed
together in runners 3-7 as Junior Peter Zimdars was the top finisher of the
group in 32nd with a time of 19:25. Freshman CJ Tomomitsu ran gutsy with the
upperclassmen and nearly running a PR. Also right in there was Will Hofmann
with a solid effort also running close to his personal best. The varsity boys
finished 5th out of 10 teams.
The JV squad was led by Senior Mason
West stopping the clock in 2-:48, good enough for 13th. First year runner and
Sophomore Marcus DePorter really ran strong and was the team’s 2nd runner in
17th with a time of 21:03. The program also celebrated senior night which
includes Broderick Frye, Jack Mayer, Justin Mitchell, Jaden Salmieri, Andy Vo,
and Mason West.

UW-Whitewater claimed the Miner’s Axe for the 23rd time in the 25-year history of the George Chryst Memorial Bowl. The rivalry game started in 1995 and was dedicated to Chryst, who passed away suddenly in 1992 after coaching UW-Platteville to a 79-60-2 record and the 1980 league championship.
Donald Allender (7 receptions, 72 yards, TD) and Tyler Reinhardt (14 tackles, 1 TFL) were named Offensive and Defensive MVPs, respectively, for the Pioneers.
The Warhawks were first on the board, taking advantage of good field position off a shanked punt late in the first quarter. Ponick plunged in from two yards out to make it 7-0 with 57 seconds on the clock.
After a UW-Platteville punt that pinned UW-Whitewater at its own 3-yard line, the Warhawks went 97 yards in 11 plays, keyed by a 41-yard pass from Oles to junior wide receiver JT Parish and finished by a 9-yard strike from Oles to senior wide receiver Josh Ringelberg that made it 14-0 with 7:05 left in the second quarter.

Tuesday night, 10/8, the Whitewater volleyball team celebrated their 2019 Senior Night in front a large, loud Homecoming crowd, led by the UWW Warhawk volleyball team. The Warhawks encouraged the high school students with many cheers, which helped make the gym roar. Before the start of the match junior Kacie Carollo spoke on behalf of the team about the only senior, #6 Maddie Arnett. Here is what Kacie shared with everyone one in the gym: “On behalf of the Whippet Volleyball program we want to thank Maddie Arnett, our only senior, for her dedication and loyalty to volleyball the last four years! She has been a great teammate, friend, and big sister to all of us. She truly embodies what it means to be a Whippet athlete, and we wish her the best with her future! Thank you, Maddie!”

The Whippets fought hard against the #8 DII team in the
state, East Troy, but lost 25-13, 25-20, 25-12. I am very pleased with how well
the team played. Our defense is reading opponent hitters much better and
continues to make strides forward pursuing balls. The team needs to keep working
on more consistent first ball contact so they can run a fast tempo and stay in
system. The Whippets served tough and aggressive which resulted in East Troy
not being able to set their primary hitters.

Whitewater hits the road for their last regular season
conference match on Thursday, as they head to Clinton. They are looking to have
another night of determined play against the Cougars and gain momentum heading
into the conference tournament next Saturday, October 19th and then regional
play-offs October 22nd.
On a cool, crisp night in Wisconsin Dells the Whitewater Whippet cross country teams were able to finish off their regular season schedule on a high note. This meet is raced after sundown and contested under strategically placed flood lights to illuminate the course and Christmas lights on the sweeping turns and trees. There is no meet like this in the Midwest. There were over 40 teams that competed in the D1/D2 and D3 races throughout the night.
In near perfect race conditions, the girls got things started off first with nearly every girl running a new personal best. Gwen Truesdale paced the Whippets with a 54th place finish out of 151 runners. Her time of 23:38 is her best ever and her competitive edge is getting sharper by the day. Sabrina Bomberg also joined Gwen in the 23’s by running 23:55 and placed 62nd. Also dropping significant time were Morgan Stillwagon in 26:22, Jenny Villareal running 27:04, Jenna Lee 27:23, Izzy Dieter 27:40, Nikole Pelot 27:59, Jeanette Falcon 28:23, and Evie Troxel 28:04. The varsity girls placed 13th out of 14 teams in the D2 results.
The boys reflected the same improvements as a slew of runners earned a new personal best. Gio Anello paced the Whippets early with a hot start that helped propel him to a new level of racing. He was rewarded with new confidence going into championship time as he rubbed elbows with some strong runners. He finished in 9th with a time of 17:06. Trenten Zahn wouldn’t disappoint as he saw his way through the field and finished with vengeance to take 6th place in 16:51. Both boys earned a medal in the meet. Cooper Hammond cracked 18 minutes for the second time in 6 days as he ran 18:40. Not far back was Manny Rodriguez running 18:57. Will Hofmann rounded out the top 5 with a time of 19:14. Also cutting time off their personal best were Jack Mayer in 20:04, Marcus DePorter 20:49, Evan Schepp 20:55, Jaden Salmieri 20:56, Broderick Frye 21:07, Josiah Holden 21:55, Andy Vo 22:20, Justin Mitchell 25:20, and Andrew Rollette in 26:02.
