Edgerton at Whitewater Tennis

From Coach Tim Nelson

Whitewater celebrated senior night with a 5-2 victory on Sept. 17 over Edgerton. The win puts the Whippets at 14-7 on the year.

Overall, I was pleased with our effort. Our footwork was a little better this evening and we didn’t try and overdo things. Cassidy Laue played well this evening. She was down most of the first set but at 4-5 in the first set, she really started picking her game up and won the next three to take the first set and then kept it going in the second. Tessa and Josie at 3 and 4 singles were steady throughout the evening. Our 1 and 2 doubles teams were both pretty solid. They each had a game or two when they were a little flat, but were able to turn things around right away so that the matches were never in doubt.

We finish up the conference season at McFarland on Thursday evening.

No. 3 Warhawks Outlast Concordia-Moorhead

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team scored 17 unanswered points Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14 to defeat Concordia-Moorhead 20-10 in a non-conference affair at Jake Christiansen Stadium in Moorhead, Minn.

The Warhawks (2-0 overall) finished with 267 yards passing offensively and held the Cobbers to 62 yards rushing at a 1.8 yards-per-carry clip on the defensive side. UW-Whitewater also forced four turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumbles.

Junior quarterback Zach Oles finished 19-of-29 passing for 248 yards and one touchdown and rushed for a team-high 56 yards on 14 carries with one score. Senior running back Jarrod Ware rushed for 49 yards.

Junior wide receiver JT Parish collected four receptions for 99 yards and one touchdown, and junior wide receiver Derek Kumerow registered six catches for 68 yards.

Senior linebacker Matt Anderson totaled a team-high nine tackles, and senior defensive back Jacob Frey recorded eight stops.

Junior kicker Wojciech Gasienica opened scoring for the Warhawks with a 23-yard field goal midway through the first quarter after an interception by senior defensive back Garrett Purdy set up UW-W near midfield.

The Cobbers (0-2) tallied the next 10 points, finding the end zone five minutes into the second quarter and kicking a field goal with 2:38 left in the period for a 10-3 advantage.

UW-Whitewater closed the first half strong in just two plays. After a 16-yard completion to Kumerow, Oles hit Parish for a 54-yard touchdown with 1:53 on the clock to tie the game at 10-10.

Gasienica knocked through his second field goal of the game from 33 yards out five minutes into the third quarter to complete an 11-play, 58-yard drive that started the second half.

Early in the fourth quarter, Concordia drove deep into Warhawk territory, but junior defensive back Mark McGrath picked off Blake Kragnes in the end zone for a touchback with 11:52 to play in the contest.

On the ensuing drive, UW-Whitewater drove 80 yards on 14 plays, converting two third downs and a fourth down late in the drive. On second-and-10 from the Cobbers’ 14-yard line, Oles took a quarterback draw untouched into the end zone for a 20-10 lead with 4:59 to go.

The two teams exchanged punts, but the Warhawks forced and recovered a fumble on the punt return with 1:54 remaining to seal the win.

UW-Whitewater closes the non-conference regular season next Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Xavier. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.

WHS Tennis Champions at Edgerton Quad

Whippet Champs with Edgerton Quad trophy

The Whippets participated in the Edgerton Quad on Sat. Sept. 14, played at Delavan-Darien High School due to construction taking place on Edgerton’s home courts. Whitewater had a very successful day defeating Delavan-Darien and Columbus 7-0 and Edgerton 6-1 to take home the championship. Edgerton finished second at 2-1, Delavan-Darien finished at 1-2 and Columbus was 0-3.

We were missing a couple of kids today due to ACT testing which led to a couple of different doubles teams, but the two new teams played well, especially considering the lack of practice time that they had to work together. Mariana Cano and Emily Scherer teamed up at 2 doubles and only lost 4 games combined in their 3 matches. Anisa Dauti and Crystal Chan, making her varsity debut, won all three of their matches in very close fashion having at least one tiebreaker in each match.

Whitewater will be back in action on Tuesday at Whitewater with a dual against Edgerton.

Whippet Tennis Falls to Jefferson

The Whippets lost a close 3-4 match to Jefferson at Whitewater on Monday, September 9.

We certainly had our opportunities to pull this match out. Our lack of footwork continues to be an area that we need to work on. If we don’t move you can’t get the ball to go where you need it to go. I was pleased with several things as well though. Our 1 and 2 singles players actually played some very nice points. They were setting their points up quite well, but they were playing two very good players who don’t let you make an error of any kind without making you pay for it.

Tessa Papcke showed some mental toughness after completely losing focus in the second set; she was able to pull it back together and win a close 3rd set.

Our 1 and 2 doubles teams were hitting some very nice angles at the net. That is something that we have been working on and was a definite positive this evening.

On Thursday we head to Walworth to face a very tough Big Foot team.

Whitewater Girls’ Tennis Falls to East Troy

While Whitewater still fell 7-0 to defending conference champion East Troy, the match was much more competitive with several matches much closer than the match played between the two earlier in the year.

We still need to make major improvements in our aggressiveness and our footwork. I was pleased with progress that we have made. Our number two doubles team of Melanie Reyes and Mariana Cano showed a huge step forward from the first time these two teams played. In the earlier match the duo lost 6-2, 6-2 and in tonight’s matchup they closed it to a 6-4, 7-5 loss. We have to continue to work on improving these areas that make the difference in matches as we get ready for our next conference match.

This Monday the Whippets face Jefferson at 4pm at WHS.

Results:

1S Cassidy Laue lost Lauren Lindow 0-6, 0-6

2S Kaitlyn Partoll lost Syd Raddeman 2-6, 2-6

WHS Swimmers Break Two Conference Records

The Whippet Swim Team started their competition portion of the season Thursday night, September 5, with some impressive swims. Despite disqualifying two of the thirteen relays, the Whippets were still able to finish in 5th place overall. This season all swimmers were able to swim at least one relay for the team. The following girls did great in their first meet as Whippets: Brooke Bazeley, Vanessa Falcon, Grace Foucault, Hailey Murphy, Emily Radaj, Josie Treder, Karime Velazquez, and Ashly Xochipa.

We had four 1st place medal winning performances earned by different combinations of five of our swimmers:

4×100 IM *NEW Southern Lakes Conference Record previously held by a 2012 Whitewater High School relay team, now held by Grace Foucault, Sophia Fanshaw, Brianna Zimdars, and Ella Houwers with a time of 4:16.88. This is over 5 seconds faster than the previous record and 8 seconds faster than any other relay that swam.

1000 Freestyle (100, 200, 300, 400) – Amber Krebs, Grace Foucault, Brianna Zimdars, and Ella Houwers with a time of 10:25.70 which was 12 seconds faster than any other team that swam, and it was 22 seconds faster than our group that finished the same relay in first last year at this meet.

500 Freestyle (50, 100, 150, 200) – Sophia Fanshaw, Grace Foucault, Brianna Zimdars, and Ella Houwers with a time of 4:53.28 which was 18 seconds faster than any other relay that swam.

400 Backstroke – Brianna Zimdars, Sophia Fanshaw, Grace Foucault, and Ella Houwers sprinted to a *NEW Southern Lakes Conference record with a time of 4:10.05, over 5 seconds faster than the previous record and over 7 seconds faster than all relays that swam.

Other highlights include the eight swimmers that swam on our 200 Butterfly relays all went best times. The relay of Raquel Ortiz, Brooke Bazeley, Ellie Treder, and Lexi Hackney went 22 seconds faster than their seedtime. In addition, the relay team of Natalie Amos, Giselle Ramirez, Josie Treder, and Mina Truesdale all dropped time to go 6 seconds under their seedtime.

A few standout splits include Hailey Murphy in the 50 Breaststroke 36.89, Brooke Bazeley in the 50 Freestyle 29.99, and Mina Truesdale in the 50 Butterfly 38.92.

Coach Foucault stated, “I am very proud of our team and cannot wait to see more racing in the next couple of weeks.”
