Many WHS Gymnasts Score Personal Bests at Platteville Invite

The Whitewater High School Gymnastics team headed to Platteville on Saturday, February 15th, to compete in the 12-team Lisa Steger Memorial Gymnastics Invitational. Out of the 12 teams, there were approximately 60 competitors on each event.

The highlights of the invitational included Jenna Caldwell placing 16th on the Vault, scoring a personal best of 8.325, another personal best on the Uneven Bars, scoring a 7.5, and a 7.5 on the Floor Exercise.

Halee Peters also had a successful meet scoring a 30.7 in the All-Around, 7.95 on the Floor Exercise, 7.35 on the Balance Beam, 7.25 on the Uneven Bars, and an 8.125 on Vault.

Brenda Aguilar scored a personal best on the Balance Beam, scoring 6.9. She also competed Varsity Vault for the first time, scoring a 7.25.

Maddy Donnelly scored a 7.6 on the Vault, and Anna Ejnik scored a 7.9 on the Floor Exercise.

As a team the Whippets scored a 112.675.

Mayer Qualifies for State Swim in Two Events – UPDATED

The Whippet Swimmers had a strong showing at the Sectional Meet in Baraboo on Saturday, February 15, with Jack Mayer leading the way qualifying for the State meet on Friday, February 21 in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle. Jack broke the school record in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.23 and followed that up with a lifetime best time in the 100 Freestyle with a 48.73. Both of these swims were Top 10 times. Jack will compete at State on Friday, February 21.

In addition to Jack’s races, the team posted 13 best times, 11 top sixteen finishes, and 5 top 10 times! Our relays did very well. The 200 Medley Relay team of Jon Chan, Keith Cameron, Antonio Aranda, and Tyler Arnett dropped 5 seconds off their seed time to score points for the team. Our 200 Freestyle Relay of Devin Bazeley, Shawn Chan, Jon Chan, and Jack Mayer finished in 9th place with a new best time. Our 400 Freestyle Relay of Devin Bazeley, Shawn Chan, Tyler Arnett, and Jack Mayer also posted a best time dropping 3 seconds with their 8th place finish.

In individual events, Jonathan Manriquez posted his best time in the 200 Freestyle dropping 7 seconds and also swam his best 100 on the first 100 of that race. Tyler Arnett continued to swim strong in both the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle events, swimming right on his best times. Tyler placed 13th in the 500 Freestyle scoring points for the team.

Tony Aranda had a solid 200 Freestyle, but really stepped it up in the 500 Freestyle with an 11 second drop. Wyatt Anderson had a strong meet with his 13th place finish in the 200 Individual Medley which scored points for the team and had a 6 second drop in the 100 Breaststroke.

Devin Bazeley continued to impress with two lifetime best times. Devin finished in 8th place in the 200 Individual Medley and dropped another second off his time and finished in 9th place in the 100 Butterfly with a new best time.  Devin posted three times to the Top 10 All Time list with his lead off swim in the 200 Freestyle along with his two individual swims.

Keith Cameron had an impressive meet with a new best time in both his relay split and 50 Freestyle and swam right on his best time in the 100 Breaststroke. Shawn Chan posted a best time in the 100 Butterfly and went right on his best time in 50 Freestyle. Jon Chan swam a very nice 100 Butterfly dropping over a second off his time. Jovany Manriquez had a strong 100 Butterfly and posted his best 50 on the lead off of that swim.

It will be interesting to see what these boys can do next year!

Whippet Wrestlers Begin Tournament Series Action

After a full week of practice and recovery from hosting the Rock Valley Conference Tournament, the Whitewater Wrestling Team hit the road to Evansville to begin their quest for an opportunity to compete in the WIAA State Tournament. The team was placed in a very tough region seeing top teams from the conference for the 2nd week in a row.

On this first leg of the state series, individuals must finish in the top two of their weight class to advance to next week’s section tournament, and the top team advances to the team section on Tuesday night.

After the dust settled and the mats were cleared, the Whippets did not end up quite where they had hopes of being. The team qualified two individuals to compete next week, keeping their dreams alive for a state title. David Cushman bounced back in a big way defeating a young man whom he had lost to in the conference semi-finals last week. David wrestled an outstanding match from start to finish to find his way into the finals. Here he dropped the championship to a very good wrestler from Edgerton.

Carter Friend also was able to avenge his loss in the conference finals last week as he won a very tight match 3-1 in overtime. Carter continues to make adjustments for this opponent as they have met many times over the course of the season, and the winning wrestler has won by either 1 point or in overtime.

Coming in third place and missing out on qualifying for the sectional were CJ Tomomitsu, Cooper Hammond, Cody Gamble, Aaron Porras, Marcus DePorter, and Will Leibbrand. All of these young men wrestled tough, winning their third place match and will be an alternate if something happens to the competitor who placed above them in the bracket.

Although the finish is not where the Whippets expected to be at the beginning of the season, the team wrestled tough on Saturday and should not hang their heads. Nobody went out and just cashed it in, but fought to the very last second. For the 9 underclassmen who competed but did not get through, they will get back to work and set new goals for next season.

Cushman and Friend will compete on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. again back in Evansville.

Whippet Girls Defeat Brodhead, 52-45

The Whippet girls defeated Brodhead on Tuesday evening, Feb. 11, 52-45.

Abby Grosinske led the Whippets with 21 points with Kacie Carollo contributing 12 and Alyssa Schumacher 10. Schumacher went 6 for 7 from the free throw line.

Carollo and Cassidy Laue led the team in rebounding, pulling down 7 and 6 respectively.

Both Grosinske and Laue added 4 steals.

Gymnasts Wrap Up Dual Meet Season at Elkhorn

On Tuesday, February 11th, the Whitewater Whippet Gymnastics Team competed against the Elkhorn Elks in their last dual at Elkhorn High School.

The gymnasts had a successful meet concluding the competition with a team score of 109.325.

The highlights of the meet on the Varsity side included freshman Caleigh Yang scoring a record high on the Balance Beam with a 6.8 and a 7.775 on the Vault. Junior Jenna Caldwell scored an 8.1 on Vault, 7.1 on the Uneven Bars, and a 7.675 on the Floor exercise. Freshman Halee Peters scored a 7.95 on Vault and a 7.0 on the Uneven Bars. Sophomore Anna Ejnik scored a 7.475 on the Floor exercise and a 7.5 on the Vault. Freshman Maddy Donnelly scored a 7.475 on Vault.

On the Junior Varsity side much improvement was made with freshman Brooke Bazeley scoring a high score on the Balance Beam with a 4.8, Julia Feit competing Vault for the first time scoring a 6.3, Ashly Xochipa scoring a record high on the Vault with a 6.9, and Brenda Aguilar scoring a 6.6 on the Floor exercise and a 7.05 on Vault. Brenda also competed Varsity Beam scoring a season high of 6.35.

These Whippet gymnasts will be back in action this Saturday, February 15th, at the Platteville Invitational. Come on out and support your Whippet athletes!

WHS Swimmers Host Conference Meet

The Whippet Swimmers raced to a 6th place finish at the Southern Lakes Conference Meet on Saturday, February 8. The team earned 9 medals and swam 16 individual best times. Earning medals at the meet were: Devin Bazeley, 4th place in the 200 Individual Medley and 5th place in the 100 Butterfly; Jack Mayer, 2nd place in the 50 and 100 Freestyle; Shawn Chan, 6th place in the 50 Freestyle; and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Devin Bazeley, Shawn Chan, Jon Chan, and Jack Mayer took 3rd place. Earning new times on the Top 10 All Time Individual Events list were Jack Mayer in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and Shawn Chan in the 50 Freestyle.

Many swimmers raced hard and dropped significant time. Tyler Arnett dropped 3 seconds in the 200 Freestyle and 4 seconds in the 500 Freestyle. Wyatt Anderson dropped 4 seconds in the 200 Individual Medley and 3 seconds in the 500 Freestyle. Tony Aranda dropped 3 seconds in the 200 Individual Medley and 2 seconds in the 500 Freestyle. Madux Devitt dropped 5 seconds in the 50 Freestyle and 11 seconds in the 50 Backstroke. Jon Chan dropped time a second in the 100 Butterfly and 4 seconds in the 100 Breaststroke. Youssef Mohammed dropped 5 seconds in the 100 Backstroke. Keith Cameron broke 30 in the 50 Freestyle and dropped 2 seconds in the 100 Breaststroke.

Congratulations to all the boys on some fast swims! Next up is Sectionals on Saturday, February 15, at 1:00pm, in Baraboo.

Whippets Host RVC Wrestling Tourney

Whitewater hosted the Rock Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 8. The Whippets ended up in 5th place in the 9 school tournament. Evansville/Albany was first for the 4th straight year.

Next Saturday, the team will travel to Evansville for the WIAA Regional tournament which will begin the selections for the State Tournament in Madison at the end of February.

Whippet Girls Down McFarland 61-57

The Whitewater Whippets Girls’ Basketball team defeated McFarland 61-57 on Thursday night, February 6.

The key to this win was determination and teamwork. Cora Linos and Brianna Zimdars defended well underneath. Cassidy Laue and Alyssa Schumacher scored well in the first half. We had four of our players score in double digits.

Kacie Carollo and Cassidy Laue both scored 15, followed by Alyssa Schumacher with 12, and Abby Grosinske with 11. Kacie Carollo and Abby Grosinske hit key free throws that helped us maintain our lead until we secured the win.
