#FlashbackFriday with the Historical Society: Remnants of March Snow in May, 1881

It’s time once again for #FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society.

As this view shows, on May 7, 1881, remnants of the March mega snowstorm in that year were still around. This is a stereoscope image showing piles of snow still blocking roads in rural areas.

The stereoscope images of the unusually snowy late winter and spring of 1881 are some of the most important in the historical society’s collection and not because they show lots of snow. Many of the images were taken in the downtown and provide important information about this area when photos from this era are not widely available. They help us understand how Whitewater’s downtown looked during this period of its history.

Join us next week for more from the Whitewater Historical Society.

Obituary: Lyla Bernice Pontel, 95

Lyla Bernice Pontel, 95, Whitewater, went to be with her Savior on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Vintage on the Ponds.

Lyla was born November 1, 1927, in East Troy to Adolph and Arlene (Timm) Anderson.  She married Harlan Pontel on Sept 24, 1947. They farmed most of their lives in East Troy and Whitewater.  He preceded her in death on December 11, 2009.

Lyla enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, raising farm animals, combining fields, and baking.  There was always a sweet treat on the counter for anyone that visited.  She drove school bus, was a 4-H leader and a member of St. John’s Ladies Aid.  She loved to spend time at their house in the Northwoods, watching the birds and deer in her yard. Her passion was teaching her grandchildren valuable skills and lessons, and they lit up her beautiful smile whenever they visited.

Lyla will be greatly missed by her children, Rodney (Sherry) Pontel, Whitewater, Larry (Sue) Pontel, Globe, AZ, Bruce (Kim) Pontel, Harshaw and son-in-law John Ludeman, Harshaw; 10 Grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew.

Lyla was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, daughter Patsy (Ludeman) and grandson Jacob.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Christus Ev. Lutheran Church, Delaney Road, Delavan, WI 53115.  Burial will be in the White Oak Cemetery, Elkhorn, WI.  Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  As an expression of sympathy, you may wish to consider memorials to Christus Ev. LutheranChurch or to the Wisconsin Synod Mission Fund (WELS).  Online condolences may be made at www.nitardyfuneralhome.com.

Lyla’s prayer was that all of you know your Savior and remain in Him always.

As a result of a reader’s comment that it’s hard to find garage sales in Whitewater now that we no longer have a weekly shopper, the Banner staff agreed three years ago to begin a “consolidated” garage sale posting that is published each Thursday morning for the upcoming weekend’s sales. We will continue that service this year. This announcement will only be for garage sales (a sale of miscellaneous household goods, often held in the garage or front yard of someone’s house) in the city and school district boundaries. We will not be accepting, for example, ads for cars or other items that are not part of a scheduled garage sale. There will be a limit of three times per year for a particular property.

Those wishing to place a notice must send the information to whitewaterbanner@gmail.com by Wednesday at 8 p.m. You may include a brief description of the items that are for sale, the hours and days of the sale, and of course your address.
