ADRC of Walworth County Offers Program to Reduce Incontinence in Older Women

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by Walworth County Aging and Disability Resource Center.

Half of all women age 50 or older will experience incontinence at some point in their lives. The Mind over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder program, offered by the Walworth County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC), is a small group, community-based program that has been proven to improve bladder symptoms for 71% of participants and bowel symptoms for over 55%.

In three, two-hour sessions, held every other week for one month, Mind over Matter gives participants strategies for reducing incontinence. This interactive workshop engages women to work together to set and meet personalized goals and is led by a trained female facilitator. The workshop is designed specifically for people who are age 50 or older, live independently, have experienced bladder/bowel issues, or are interested in preventing them. Participants can expect to leave with an understanding of how muscles work and exercises that can reduce incontinence. Participants will build confidence through goal setting and know when to seek the expertise of a health professional.

Mind over Matter will be held at Seniors in the Park at the Starin Park Community Building, 504 W. Starin Rd., Whitewater WI, 53190. The classes are hosted every other Monday (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) from July 10 through August 7. The workshop has a suggested contribution of $10.

For questions, or to register for the program, contact Chetney Blaszczyk RDN, CD at (262) 741-3309.

Landmark Trek Video – The Birge Fountain

With the Birge Fountain’s 120th Anniversary Celebration happening on location this Sunday, June 25, 1-4 p.m., it seemed appropriate for the second episode of Landmark Trek to cover one of our most popular landmark treasures. “Is there anyone who lives in Whitewater who doesn’t have a special memory of the Birge Fountain?” says Landmark Commission member, James Olm. “To commemorate this great Whitewater art-piece, we wanted this video episode to refresh people’s memories on its history past and present, and importance of it in our community.” The Landmark Commission is inviting the general public to come down to the fountain on Sunday for cake, fountain enjoyment, and conversation. Olm adds, “And while you’re having fun at the fountain, you can catch The Arts Alliance Quilting Show right next door in the Cultural Arts Center. What a great way to celebrate Whitewater’s arts offerings!” You can watch the second episode now at:

No Mail on Monday: Juneteenth National Independence Day Celebrated

There is no mail delivery on Monday, June 19 due to the celebration of Juneteenth. Per Wikipedia,
Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslavedAfrican Americans. Deriving its name from combiningJune and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Grangerproclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamationwas issued).[7] Originating in Galveston, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in various parts of the United States, often broadly celebrating African-American culture. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law after the efforts of Lula Briggs Galloway, Opal Lee, and others.”
