Whitewater Middle School Student Wins State Writing Award

Emerson Ellenwood, a student at Whitewater Middle School, has been named the 2017-18 winner of an honorable mention award from the Wisconsin Center for the Book.

Ellenwood was one of more than 760 Wisconsin students in grades 4-12 who participated in this year’s Letters About Literature contest and one of more than 51 semi-finalists. The contest invites young readers to write a letter to an author describing how that author’s work changed their view of the world or of themselves. Judges selected Ellenwood’s letter to author Veronica Roth about her book, Divergent, in Level 1 competition for students in grades 4-6. The awards ceremony was held at the YWCA Auditorium in Green Bay as part of the Untitledtown Book Festival on April 21, 2018

The first- and second-place plus honorable mention winners were chosen from the group of semi-finalists in various grade levels (Level 1 – Grades 4-6; Level II – Grades 7-8; and Level III – Grades 9-12). First-place winners at all three levels are sent on to the national Letters about Literature competition for judging and additional prizes. More than 40,000 young readers across the country participated in this year’s Letters About Literature contest.

The Letters About Literature program in Wisconsin has been coordinated by the Wisconsin Center for the Book since 1992 in partnership with the Library of Congress.

Excerpt of Ellenwood’s letter: “You pointed out that it would be boring if we were all the same and gave me the message that being diverse or unique is okay and in some ways interesting or an advantage.”

Article by Nate Parrish

After a two-week weather delay, the Whitewater Whippet baseball team was finally back on the field to take on conference rival Edgerton. The Whippets would come away with a 3-2 win and improved to 4-0 on the season.

Whitewater would jump out to an early lead after James Dedrick led off the game being hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, Dylan Pease laid down a sac bunt to move him to 3rd and would score on another wild pitch to make it 1-0. Bryce Parrish would make it 2-0 with a solo home run to left at the end of 1 inning. Edgerton would not go away quietly as they got a big two-out 2 run single in the 4th inning to tie the game at 2. The Whippets would quickly answer in the bottom of the 4th as Cooper Pease singled and Danny Harnack moved him over to 2nd with a ground ball to 1st. With 2 outs, Chris Dedrick came up with a big hit as he lined to center scoring the go-ahead and eventual winning run. James Dedrick picked up the win as he went 6 innings giving up 4 hits, 2 earned runs and striking out 4 while walking 4. Bryce Parrish would pick up the save by closing out the game in the 7th. Coach Pease was happy to walk away with a win after a two-week layoff. He said, “We had a number of mental mistakes and kind of looked like a team that had not played in two weeks but anytime you can get a win, especially over a quality opponent is good”.

Whitewater has a big stretch of games coming up after all of the postponements and will be playing up to 4-5 games a week for the rest of the season (weather permitting). Next up on the Whippet schedule is East Troy on, Tuesday April 24th at home with first pitch at 4:45 pm.
