WHS Boys Soccer finishes season after overtime regional

From Coach Chenoweth:

The Whitewater High School Boys Soccer team took the two hour trip to Platteville / Lancaster to play in the first round of regionals. Whitewater went in as the 12th seed in our sectional, with Platteville/Lancaster being the 5th seed. Based on our records against common opponents we knew it would be a competitive game with a chance for the Whippets to pull off the upset.

We came out playing quality soccer and Juan Cuellar put the Whippets up with a goal in the 24th minute for the only score of the first half. The Hillmen built some momentum with a goal in the 4th minute of the second half and had some strong support from their local fans. But, the Whippets were able to hold the home team back and the evenly matched game ended regulation time with a 1-1 tie.

We then headed to overtime. Unfortunately, the Hillmen struck early in the half and then built on that momentum with the same player finding the net twice more in the next 6 minutes. While it’s never fun to lose, the Whippets put up a solid game in regulation. Hopefully, the results will be motivating for our returning players next year to come into the season prepared to compete from day one and to have some high goals.

We appreciate all of the support from our parents and supporters throughout the season. And, we wish our senior players well as they finish up their last year of high school and move on to other opportunities.

WUSD Receives an Additional $106,388 in Department of Justice (DOJ) Safety Grant Dollars

As part of the state’s 100 million dollar school safety funding initiative, Whitewater received over $102,000 in the first round of funding. This week the Wisconsin DOJ announced that Whitewater will receive an additional $106,388 to continue to enhance the safety of our schools. Much of the funding from the second round of funding will be geared toward mental health training as well as threat assessment training for our District.

In addition to that training, the District will be adding additional products to windows in the schools that will allow for our welcoming daily use and also increase security in an active threat situation. Other approved grant purchase includes training staff on the use of specialized wound kits that have been proven to save lives in the event of an actual emergency.

While the largest amounts of time and energy will be focused on mental health and prevention of school violence, these additional resources, along with the purchases from our first round of funding, will help to make sure our schools are ready if the unthinkable were to ever happen here.

WUSD is grateful to receive these additional dollars which will continue to help enhance our school safety practices. A special thank you to David Brokopp and Lanora Heim for being the primary writers of the grant. The DOJ has announced our award to media in a press release which can be found here: https://www.doj.state.wi.us/news-releases/ag-schimel-announces-nearly-12-million-school-safety-grant-funding-167-schools-and
