Chancellor’s Whitewater Community Listening Session Mon., 11/4

The Whitewater community is invited to join Chancellor Dwight Watson on Monday, Nov. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. in room 105 of the Innovation Center at Whitewater University Technology Park, 1221 Innovation Drive, Whitewater, for a community listening session.

It is important that Chancellor Watson begins his tenure by listening, learning, and leading. Listening carefully to all the constituencies is a critical part of the learning process.

The listening session will be your opportunity to speak to Chancellor Watson in an environment where candor will be appreciated and encouraged. He wants to hear about what the university is doing right, what could be improved and your concerns and recommendations. There is no agenda for this meeting other than to discover more about our community.

UW-Whitewater Women’s Tennis Earns 13th Straight WIAC Title

UW-Whitewater Women’s Tennis Earns 13th Straight WIAC Title

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s tennis team captured its 13th consecutive conference title and 20th in program history Sunday on the second and final day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

The Warhawks amassed 54 points in the championship to edge UW-Eau Claire, which finished with 52.

The WIAC Championship accounts for two-thirds of the conference title. UW-Whitewater won all six of its league dual meets during the regular season to secure all seven points in the remaining third.

By claiming the league championship, the Warhawks earned the right to host the four-team WIAC Team Tournament, which is scheduled for April 25. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 8.

Sophomore Elsie Ha picked up her first career WIAC championship with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over UW-Eau Claire at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Jessica Minkov was next on the board with her second league title, collecting a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 against UW-Eau Claire. Both Ha and Minkov were top seeds in their respective brackets and earned straight-set victories in the semifinals.

Senior Madeline Slicker earned her second straight championship at No. 5 singles, recovering from a first-set loss for a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) triumph over UW-Eau Claire in the final. The draw’s top seed, Slicker punched her ticket to the title match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over UW-Oshkosh.

Junior Sabrina Palavra finished as runner-up at the third flight, falling 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the final against UW-La Crosse. Junior Paige Nierman was edged in three sets in her semifinal at No. 1, but recovered nicely for a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the third-place match against UW-Oshkosh.

Sophomore Olivia Kraft was also narrowly defeated in her semifinal match at No. 2, and ended up placing fourth in the bracket.

Sophomore Molly Rueth and freshman Megan Setter finished their weekend at 2-0 in the second draw for their first career WIAC title. The duo bested UW-Oshkosh by an 8-6 score in the semifinal before combining for an 8-5 triumph in the final against UW-Eau Claire.

Kraft and freshman Courtney Day made it two out of three for the Warhawks in doubles with their first championship, finishing 2-0 at the No. 3 draw. The pair upended UW-River Falls 8-2 in the semifinals and registered an 8-4 win over UW-Eau Claire.

Nierman and Palavra finished fourth at No. 1 doubles.

For the second straight season, Slicker was named UW-Whitewater’s representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

UW-Whitewater’s spring season officially begins March 7 against Division I Milwaukee. An alumni event is scheduled for March 6 at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.

WIAA Sectional Results; Gio Anello Punched Ticket to State

On Saturday, 10/26, the Whippet CC program hosted its first ever double CC sectional which include their own Division 2 level tournament race as well as Division 3 races after. It was a spectacular day to showcase cross country at a high level in our own backyard. The event was a great success!

The girls raced first and ran very strong in perfect racing conditions. In fact, many runners ran significantly faster on the same race course than they did a little over a week ago at the Rock Valley Conference Meet. Freshman Sabrina Bomberg once again led the team as the first girl across the line from Whitewater. Her time of 24:31 was good enough for 59th place and mere seconds off her season best on arguably the toughest course the team races on all year. Olive Coburn broke 25 minutes for the first time on the UWW course stopping the clock in 24:55 which placed her 64th. Gwen Truesdale placed 69th in 25:20 after battling some injuries late in the season. Senior Morgan Stillwagon ran her lifetime best by 42 seconds to take 72nd in 25:40. Sophie Walton was 81st in 27:05 and Jenny Villarreal took 85th in 28:42. The girls program placed 11th in the race. This official marks the end to the girls CC season for 2019.

The boys raced next which were led by Sophomore Gio Anello. Gio punched his ticket to state for the first time as he was one of the top 5 individuals to cross the line that were not on the two qualifying teams. Gio had to do a serious gut check with 1000 meters to go to see his dreams become reality as he dug deep to not let anyone pass him and hold onto his position in the field. His 10th place finish was the fifth and final position to train and race one more week. His finish time for the 5K course was 17:47. Cooper Hammond was the next Whippet across the line in taking 42nd in 19:35. Running close together as a pack again were fellow Whippets Peter Zimdars and Manny Rodriguez. They placed 46th and 49th with times of 19:43 and 19:48. Will Hofmann placed 59th in 20:08, CJ Tomomitsu was 63rd in 20:17 and Mason West ran his last race in a Whippet jersey running 21:24 which was good enough was 76th. Junior Trenten Zahn did not compete due to injury. The boys team finished in 8th place overall.

Gio will be racing at the WIAA State XC Meet on Saturday, Nov. 2nd in Wisconsin Rapids, located on the Ridges Golf Course. His race time is 2:00.

No. 3 Warhawk Football Moves to 7-0 With Road Win

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team scored 21 unanswered points over a 15-minute span in the second and third quarters that proved to be the difference on 10/26 in a 49-28 victory at UW-River Falls in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

The Warhawks (7-0 overall, 4-0 WIAC) scored with 2:32 to play in the second quarter and added touchdowns at the 11:35 and 2:28 marks of the third to turn a one-score game into a 42-13 advantage.

UW-Whitewater was out-gained 495-429 in total yards by the Falcons (1-6, 0-4), but forced five turnovers, including three interceptions in the second half.

Junior quarterback Zach Oles threw for 211 yards and tied a school record with six passing touchdowns to lead the offense. Junior running back Alex Peete rushed 13 times for 108 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Tyler Holte caught three passes for 70 yards and one touchdown, and junior wide receiver Derek Kumerow posted five receptions for 61 yards and two scores.

Junior linebacker Kaleb Kaminski tallied 13 tackles, while senior linebacker Matt Anderson finished with 12 to lead the defense. Senior defensive back Jacob Frey added nine tackles, and sophomore linebacker Aaron Sturdevant collected nine stops.

After UW-River Falls scored on its opening drive for a 7-0 lead, the Warhawks answered quickly with a nine-play, 53-yard drive that included a 13-yard pass from Oles to Kumerow on fourth down. Holte caught an eight-yard pass from Oles on third down to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:43 on the clock.

Following a punt, Peete recorded a 59-yard touchdown, his ninth of the season, to give UW-Whitewater the lead for good.

After a Falcon field goal, Oles hit freshman wide receiver Sam DeLany for an 18-yard score midway through the second quarter for a 21-10 lead. The drive was set up by a long kick return by junior Ryan Wisniewski.

UW-River Falls drew to within eight on another field goal. UW-W forced a turnover on a fumble recovery by senior defensive back Nate Tranel, and two plays later, Oles hit a wide-open Kumerow for a 27-yard touchdown with 2:32 remaining in the first half. The play was set up by a 43-yard completion from Oles to Holte.

The Warhawks opened the second half with a seven-play, 64-yard drive capped by another Oles-to-Kumerow connection, this one from eight yards out, for a 35-13 score with 11:35 to play in the third quarter.

UW-Whitewater tacked on another score in the third on a 35-yard screen pass from Oles to sophomore running back Jaylon Edmonson with 2:28 left.

Following two touchdowns by UW-River Falls, the Warhawks completed scoring with 2:38 to play in the contest on a 15-yard shovel pass from Oles to junior wide receiver JT Parish.

UW-Whitewater returns home next Saturday, Oct. 26, to take on UW-La Crosse. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.
