The first place UW-Whitewater ladies basketball team rolled over UW-River Falls on Saturday, Feb 8, by a score of 71-45. Leading the Warhawk scoring were Senior Becky Raeder and Junior WHS graduate Rebekah Schumacher, each with 16 points. Find additional game details here. The Whitewater Community Foundation will be hosting the 4th Annual Whitewater Civic Summit on Thursday, April 30th beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Space located at 834 East Milwaukee Street in Whitewater. The evening will start with a light meal to give people a chance to mix and connect before digging into our agenda in an open forum setting at 6:00 p.m. Whitewater has seen significant positive momentum in the community since the Summit was held last April, including: the ongoing success of Whitewater Grocery Co, the inclusion of a community calendar on the Whitewater Banner website, the continued growth of entitles like the Book Teller and the Community Space, the Whitewater Community Market shifting to operating weekly year-round (“off-season”) inside the Library, Whitewater Unites Lives providing meals for families over summer break, and many other initiatives. Saturday February 8, 2020 PacMan themed team members from Lakeview Elementary made their leaps into the chilly waters at Freezefest. They really were “freezin’ for a reason!” Congratulations to this team for their fundraising efforts and a $2800 donation to Special Olympics.
Members of this team included: Justin Kamp (Music), Sara Brautigam (Art), Jen Clarke (Kindergarten), Brandon Wein (5th grade), Chelsea Niewiedzial (School Counselor) Melissa Paszkiewicz (Early Childhood Special Education), Jess DePorter (Paraprofessional), Stacey Van De Wielen (Paraprofessional), Megan Tourdot (Paraprofessional), Reese Hagan (4th grade student) and Laken Deporter (4th grade student).
Whitewater hosted the Rock Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 8. The Whippets ended up in 5th place in the 9 school tournament. Evansville/Albany was first for the 4th straight year.
Next Saturday, the team will travel to Evansville for the WIAA Regional tournament which will begin the selections for the State Tournament in Madison at the end of February.

Life-saving blood donations needed to help patients across Wisconsin
As Valentine’s Day approaches, Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin wants you to know that you’re somebody’s type when it comes to blood donation. Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin is encouraging community members to schedule lifesaving blood donations by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) or support one of the local community drives. Donations of all blood types are needed, but especially type O negative blood in the winter months, which is the universal blood type given to patients in emergency situations and those undergoing surgery.
Whitewater blood donors can help patients in need at Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin’s upcoming blood drives:
Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at UW-Whitewater – Esker Hall, 420 N. Prairie St., Whitewater
Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at UW-Whitewater – Esker Hall, 420 N. Prairie St., Whitewater
Donors can schedule an appointment by calling 1-877-BE-A-HERO (1-877-232-4376) or visiting versiti.org/Wisconsin. Anyone age 17 or older who is in good health and meets eligibility requirements is encouraged to donate blood. Appointments are preferred, but walk-in donors are also welcome. Parental consent is required for 16-year-olds to donate. The entire process takes about an hour. Donors should bring a photo ID that includes birth date.

On Saturday, February 8 at approximately 7:40 a.m., Rock County deputies and Milton EMS responded to a crash in the 8000 block of North Cty Highway KK, north of Hwy 59, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
A 65-year-old male from Whitewater was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox northbound on KK when it is believed “he suffered a medical event” before losing control, resulting in the car overturning. He and a 64-year-old Whitewater woman were trapped in the car. The woman did not suffer serious injuries. The man, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, died after being transported to a hospital.
Sterling H. M. Espinoza, 20, of Whitewater, died on Monday, February 3 after a rollover crash nearby on Hwy 59.
Whitewater resident Lola Myszewski donated her hair to an organization called Wigs 4 Kids. The non-profit helps outfit young people — cancer patients, burn victims, etc.,– with wigs made from donations like Lola’s.
