Dream Fund Virtual Benefit October 16; UW-Whitewater Dream Scholars and Colleagues and Department of Music

(UW-Whitewater submission)—The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Music and members of the Whitewater Dream Scholars and Colleagues (DSC) are planning to raise funds for the Whitewater Dream Fund this year in a virtual event. This will feature faculty and student vocal performances highlighting Latin American composers, performances by members of the Whitewater community, and speakers, testimonials, and visual art contributions from the Dream Scholar students. This virtual benefit fundraiser will take place on Friday, October 16, 2020 and will be streamed on the Department of Music’s YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8A-StNOqOKwsiHR7RV6-uw  beginning at 7:30 p.m. Viewers can send donations by mail to: Whitewater Dream Fund, c/o Community of Christ the Servant Church, Box 322, Whitewater, WI 53190.

Spearheading this event are faculty members Robert Gehrenbeck, Annie Stinson, and Rachel Wood; UW-Whitewater Dream Scholars and Colleagues president Nayeli Govantes Alcantar; and sound engineer Michael Inloes. This is the first time the fundraising event is being held virtually. The importance of this event is shared in the testimonials below.

From Dr. Anne Stinson (Faculty Advisor to DSC and President of the Board of Directors of the Whitewater Dream Fund) “For 12 years, the Whitewater Dream Fund has helped undocumented UW-Whitewater students who reside in Wisconsin and who have graduated from Wisconsin high schools to cover the non-resident portion of their tuition. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our traditional fundraisers cannot take place. This virtual benefit concert is more important than ever.”

“It is thanks to the efforts, passion, and dedication of Dream Scholars and Colleagues and the Whitewater Dream Fund scholarship that I was able to complete my studies at the University and to graduate as the first in my family to earn a degree. My BSE allows me to get started in the career I have always dreamed of doing.” – from a Dreamer, Daniela Porras Serna.

The Whitewater Dream Fund is a private, non-competitive scholarship for undocumented students that pays up to 100 percent of the tuition inequity faced by these individuals beginning in the second semester of the freshman year. Please join this virtual fundraiser on Friday, October 16, 2020 at 7:30 pm and make a donation toward scholarships for these deserving Dreamers.

Participate in Fort HealthCare’s Annual Frosty Rock 5K/12K Run/Walk Event – Virtually!

Participate in Fort HealthCare’s Annual Frosty Rock 5K/12K Run/Walk Event – Virtually!

(Fort HeathCare News Release) – When the temperatures outside get cooler, that doesn’t mean that outdoor fitness activities need to come to an end. Continuing with the success of the Summer Virtual 5K Series that took place earlier this year, Fort HealthCare is going to usher into the fall and winter season with a Winter Virtual 5K Series as well. The Winter Virtual 5K Series will consist of six total events offered by Fort HealthCare between October 2020 and February 2021. Participants can sign up for one or all of the races for FREE.

One of those events will be the eighth annual Frosty Rock 5K/12K run/walk, taking place between Friday, November 13 and Sunday, November 15, 2020, as a virtual event. There are different race options available, so you can choose the option that works best for you. This year, there will be:

  • Virtual Kids’ 1-Mile Fun Run
  • Virtual Untimed 5K Walk
  • Virtual Timed 5K Walk
  • Virtual Timed 12K Walk/Run

A virtual race is a race that you can do anywhere, and it does not have a specific starting time or starting place. You can choose the day, time, and even the route you want to take. Fort HealthCare has route suggestions for participants to consider and more details about the race on the event’s webpage: www.forthealthcare.com/frostyrock. Participants are also encouraged to follow the event on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FrostyRock5k12k to keep up with important event details and to share and celebrate progress with the community.

The event is free to participate in, but registration is encouraged. Participants can register for the event at https://www.forthealthcare.com/class/2020-virtual-frosty-rock/, and runners and walkers will even receive a virtual race bib and the opportunity to order event apparel if they so choose at https://www.forthealthcare.com/class/2020-virtual-frosty-rock-apparel/.

Tiffany Pernat, Fort HealthCare Worksite Wellness Coordinator, states, “Anyone is invited to participate in this event and all fitness levels are welcome! You don’t need to be a regular runner to do this – you can jog or walk the distances, too. Families and friends as well as individuals are encouraged to participate in the fun – while maintaining proper social distancing, of course.”

Pernat continues, “A 5K is 3.1 miles and a 12K is 7.46 miles. We do ask (to be fair to all participants) that you complete one of those distances in the same outing. If you have a fitness tracking device, such as a FitBit, Apple Watch, or an app on your smartphone, you may be able to see the distance of your walk or run while you are doing it. Another great option is to find a route using ‘MapMyRun’ online to find your perfect 5K or 12K course. This makes it great for folks that don’t live near the location we hosted this event in the past. A virtual event can literally be done anywhere.”

Pernat adds, “The event is totally free to participate in! We just really want to encourage the community to keep a wellness focus even during these cooler months and the holidays coming up, when our real tendencies might be to try and hibernate a little bit. Health and well-being is important all year round.”

Participants will have a choice when registering to elect to do the 5K or the 12K as a timed race. If a timed race option is chosen, racers’ times will be documented on a virtual leaderboard after proof of completion and time is submitted. You can record your time using a stopwatch, phone, or personal health tracking device.

To be eligible for prizes and for leaderboard recognition for the timed races, participants are encouraged to take a photo of their tracking device’s results and the time completed as email attachments and send them to Wellness.Advisor@forthc.com between November 13 and 15, 2020. No late submissions will be permitted.

For more information about the event or to register, visit FortHealthCare.com/FrostyRock. With questions, contact the Fort HealthCare Community Health and Wellness Department at (920) 568-5475 or via email at Wellness.Advisor@forthc.com.

Walworth County Veterans Service Office Moving to Health and Human Services Building

(Walworth County Veterans submission) The Walworth County Veterans Service Office is moving to the new County Health and Human Services Building at County Road NN on October 23rd as part of the Walworth County’s on-going efforts to improve services to veterans and their families.

The new and modern equipped building houses the all of the County’s Department Health and Human Services divisions and now has dedicated space to serve the County’s veterans as well.  Nathan Bond, the County’s Veterans Service Officer, says he and his staff are excited to be moving to the new location. “Our veterans and their families will greatly benefit from this move.  We will be right next to the Aging and Disability Resource Center and the other division of HHS, which will make coordination of services much easier,” said Bond.

Bond also stated that veterans and their families can continue to expect the same quality level of service and access to him and his staff.  “Please be patient with us as we work through the changes that any move brings—military families are very familiar with the challenges of a move,” Bond noted.  He continued, “We will keep our tradition of excellence and people can be confident that the timely and dedicated service they have come to expect will continue.”

A dedication of the Veterans Lounge in the atrium of the HHS building is on hold due to COVID-19 concerns.

Rev. Carroll J. Olm, 95, of Whitewater died on September 26, 2020

Rev. Carroll J. Olm, 95, of Whitewater died on September 26, 2020.

Carroll was born on January 30, 1925 in Marengo, Iowa to Paul and Hulda (Pohl) Olm. He earned his undergraduate degree from Mission House Theological Seminary (now Lakeland University), where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Rittershaus. After their marriage on June 15, 1948 they moved east to Princeton University, where Carroll earned his Master of Theology.

After 13 years of parish ministry, Carroll became the first Executive Director and Chaplain of Fairhaven Retirement Community, a position in which he served from 1960 – 1990.

A leader in the burgeoning field of health and human services for the elderly, Carroll was appointed by Presidents Nixon and Carter and Wisconsin Governor Knowles to national and state commissions on aging. In addition, he served on boards for the White House Conference on Aging, the American Association of Homes for the Aging, the United Church of Christ National Council for Health and Human Services Ministries, and the Wisconsin Association of Homes for the Aging.

Locally, Carroll served on the First Citizens State Bank Board of Directors for 40 years, was active in many local charities, and served on the City Council and sundry Boards.

While proud of the recognition that he received, Carroll never failed to acknowledge Marilyn’s part in the achievements.

Throughout their 70 years of marriage, Carroll and Marilyn exemplified their belief in God’s love working through us.

Carroll is survived by his children, Mark (Germaine) Olm, Elizabeth (Steven) Eberhardt, and James Olm; grandchildren Daniel Eberhardt, Leah Olm, Erin Hageman, Christopher Olm, Rachel Olm, Chelsea Olm, and Jameson Olm; and great-grandchildren Gabriel Hageman, Harmony Hageman, and Felix Jahn.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Fairhaven for the loving and compassionate care that they provided to Carroll and Marilyn.

If desired, memorials may be sent to Fairhaven or Lakeland College.
