Community Invited to 5th Grade Band Concert May 12 – Composer to Premier The Whitewater March

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by the Whitewater Unified School District.

The 5th grade bands from Lakeview, Washington and Lincoln will be combining together for a District Wide 5th Grade Band concert on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at Whitewater High School in the Auditorium.  They will be working with a special guest, Composer Peter Terry during the day for rehearsals as well as at the concert. Peter Terry will be joining the 5th grade band to work with them as well as premiering his new composition called “The Whitewater March” that he wrote and dedicated to the Whitewater 5th grade band, and their teacher, Justin Kamp. Peter Terry’s travel and expenses have been paid for by Excelcia Music Publishing Company in Florida.  At the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2019, Mr. Kamp won a raffle from Excelcia Publishing and they awarded a composer visit to WUSD!

Peter Terry (b. 1957) is an award-winning composer, conductor and educator. He holds a bachelor’s degree in trumpet from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in music composition and theory from Bowling Green State University, and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in music composition and theory.

Dr. Terry’s compositions have been performed and broadcast worldwide and appear on numerous contest and festival required music lists. With over 70 works published by Excelcia Music, Carl Fischer, BRS Music, Dorn Publications and Music for Percussion, Inc., Dr. Terry is sought out for commissions by numerous chamber groups, choirs, concert bands and orchestras. He is accomplished at every level of ensemble writing from beginner to middle school, high school and advanced ensembles. His music is colorful, dramatic, and characterized by a rhythmic verve and a deep lyricism that shows the influences of American popular music, world music and American classical composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and Samuel Barber. He is particularly proud of the emphasis on playability and melodic interest for all the instruments in his compositions.

Dr. Terry has served on the faculties of the University of Texas at Austin, Cal State-Los Angeles, Bowling Green State University and Bluffton University and the Interlochen Arts Camp.

Bucks head back to Boston with Series Even at 2-2

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The Bucks head back to Boston with the series even at 2-2 after the Celtics win a bruising Game 4

In what has been a knock-down, drag-out second-round series in the NBA playoffs, the Milwaukee Bucks missed a chance to put the Boston Celtics in a stranglehold.

Jayson Tatum and Al Horford each scored 30 points and both made big plays down the stretch as the Celtics earned a bruising 116-108 victory in Game 4 Monday night at Fiserv Forum.

Boston’s victory evened the best-of-seven matchup at 2-2. Game 5 is Wednesday night at TD Garden in Boston.

Our Readers Share – Steve Watson: “No swans were harmed”

Steve Watson writes, “This morning (May 8) on my daily walk, I spotted a bald eagle out on Trippe Lake watching a pair of swans. After a short time the eagle flew off hungry and no swans were harmed.”

Our thanks to Steve Watson for sharing another interesting nature photo.

Mary Taft Althaus Honored at American Quilters Society show

This quilt, Color to Lift the Spirit, was made by Whitewater’s Mary Taft Althaus. It was entered in the Quilt Week Show of the American Quilters Society which was held in Paducah, Kentucky, April 27-30. The beautiful piece was the Honorable Mention winner in the stationary machine quilted large quilt category. The award winners may be viewed on this website.

Mary Althaus said, “When I began quilt-making in the late 1980’s, I used traditional patterns and fabrics. In the early 2000’s, I began using reproduction 1800 patterns and fabrics. I joined other quilters via the Internet in discussion groups. Groups are geared towards style, fabric, a quilt designer, a fabric designer, or a specific quilt pattern to name a few. In the last few years, I have drifted towards the brighter fabrics, using Electric Quilt for design, and Inklingo to print sewing and cutting lines on fabric using my laptop and home printer.”

Roberta’s Art Gallery Exhibit “PSYCHE” Runs through May 27

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by Roberta’s Art Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

All are invite to dive deeper into their own psyche: soul, mind, and spirit, at Roberta’s Art Gallery, in the “PSYCHE” exhibit by Liala Amin, running through May 4 – May 27. Amin’s pieces in the exhibit consist of paintings of intricate details, exploring themes of personal identity, spirituality, and femininity.

“And Dream Of…” By Liala Amin

Amin graduated from the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fibers, and is currently back in school pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Art Therapy at Alverno College. Amin is experienced in multiple disciplines of art: mixed media paintings, drawings, and textiles, with painting being her preferred medium. Amin is fascinated and pulls inspiration from female Surrealist artists, and the concept of Surrealist autonomism: a method of curation where the artist allows the unconscious mind to take the lead in the creative process.

“The Guide” By Liala Amin

Amin’s “PSYCHE” exhibit features work done by using mixed media, with most of her pieces consisting of watercolor and acrylic paint to fuel the creative process. Most pieces in the exhibit feature a face, a silhouette, or other figures, surrounded by different beautiful watercolor strokes, challenging the viewer to investigate their own psyche.

To learn more about Amin, her art, and experiences, visit her website.

Roberta’s Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the James R. Connor University Center (UC) at UW-Whitewater. The gallery hosts multiple exhibits each semester by collaborating with the artists–both locally and regionally. Many of our events will be held in person this semester, with the option of a virtual exhibit. Our hours in semester are Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., with our summer hours beginning the week of May 16, Monday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Roberta’s Art Gallery prides itself on all of their exhibits being free and open to the public. This means anyone: whether you’re a student, a Whitewater community member, or someone wanting to support the artist, please stop by. For questions or further information, contact Roberta’s Art Gallery at (262) 472-3193 or ucart@uww.edu or visit our website.
