Herbert J. Lundin, age 91, died January 16, 2019 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, with family and friends at his side.

He is survived by his wife, Dona, daughter Martha (Steve Frey), and sons David (Aggy Lun) and Paul (Jeni McEwen). He is also survived by grandchildren Dan and Samantha Lundin, brother Bob (Mary) Lundin, sister LaVerne Burmeister, nephews, nieces, and many other family members and friends.

Herb was born on February 7, 1927, in Niagara, Wisconsin, to the late Josephine (Mendini) and Herbert C. Lundin. Always curious and ready to learn, Herb excelled in his schoolwork and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, all while working various jobs, which included picking fruit at a farm, a paper route, and stocking grocery shelves. In addition, he served as an altar boy, custodian, and all-around helper for St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Eager to serve his country in WWII, Herb graduated from Niagara High School a semester early, and at age 17 enlisted in the Navy in December 1944. After completing training as an aviation radioman and naval air crewman, Herb was in Bremerton, Washington, waiting to be shipped to the Pacific Rim when the war ended.

After finishing his commitment to the Navy, he returned to Wisconsin and attended college at the Oshkosh State Teachers College. While there, he met his future wife Dona. He graduated with a degree in secondary education in 1950, and then worked for the Milwaukee Cheese Company and the AAA International Travel Department.

On June 6, 1953, Herb and Dona were married in Oshkosh. He taught high school in Gresham before he and Dona moved to Boulder, Colorado to complete his master’s degree in geography in 1958. The travels weren’t over; he and Dona relocated to Syracuse, New York, for four years, where Herb received his Ph.D. in geography from Syracuse University. In 1962, they returned to Colorado, and Herb taught at the University of Northern Colorado. After daughter Martha arrived,
they made one more move across the country in 1964, this time to Whitewater, Wisconsin, where sons David and Paul joined the family.

Herb spent 26 years teaching and working in administration at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He taught historical and Wisconsin geography to thousands of students over the years, led three student group tours to the Soviet Union in the 1970s, and was the winner of the 1971 Excellence in Teaching Award.

He retired in 1990, but that didn’t slow him down. In 1992, Herb and Dona moved to Waukesha, and Herb was a volunteer tutor for several students learning English as a second language through the Literacy Council, performed puppet shows, gave talks about Wisconsin lore, and helped at the Food Pantry of Waukesha County. In 2012, they found a spiritual home and family with the United Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

Herb’s favorite activities were varied and many: He cherished time at Wild Rose, Wisconsin, where the family camped when the kids were young. He loved teaching opportunities, asking hypothetical questions, eating pickles and chocolate-covered peanuts (not together), camping, examining rocks, writing philosophical essays and poetry, sighting Wisconsin barns, and scenic traveling. He was an excellent cook and a play-by-ear piano player who drew caricatures and artistic doodles and perfected the art of writing backwards. In his last years, he created colorful mosaics using stained glass, completing dozens and giving away many to family and friends. He lived with integrity, gave to others before himself, enjoyed young people, and delighted in stumping people with his word play – until they learned to spot the twinkle in his eye that signaled a joke on the way!

Herb’s family extends a special thank you to dear friends Pam and Jennifer Beiriger; the Linden Court and Hometown Hospice caregivers; and the members of UUUC for their loving care of Herb.

A celebration of life service is planned for Sunday, March 3, at the United Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 506 N. Washington Ave., Waukesha, Wisconsin. Frank A Ludeman, 89, passed peacefully on February 5, 2019 at Fairhaven Community.

Frank was born on August 6, 1929, the son of Arthur and Lillian (Romey) Ludeman and lived his entire life in Whitewater. He worked as a farmer in his early years and on August 21, 1954, he married Bertha (Orcutt) in Whitewater. Then in 1959, Frank moved his growing family to town and started working for Federal Fertilizer, eventually retiring from Kaiser Chemical Company. He raised his family in a quiet demeanor as he knew it was hard to get a word in edgewise with six daughters – when they asked for his permission, his response was always, “go ask your mother”.

Frank enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, listening to polka music and radio station 940 WFAW every morning to hear the local news. He was also an avid reader of the Janesville Gazette, the local authority according to Frank. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, reading their favorite stories over and over to them. Frank was looking forward to his twin great grandchildren arriving in April. You also knew that if you planned a family event on a Saturday, it had to be done in time for Frank to usher at the evening mass at St. Patrick’s Church. He especially enjoyed living in his condo “retirement” community on Clay Street.

Frank is survived by his children – Barb (John) Frieberg, Port Ludlow, WA, Robert (Sherry), Kenosha, Cindy (Kurt) Speich, Jan (Steve) Gorsuch, Deb (Mark) Mead all of Whitewater, Rita Mizener, Janesville, and Anne (Kent) Martin, Deforest. Grandchildren – Andy (Jessica) Ludeman, Jenny Ludeman, Krista (Misael) Pueblita, Amanda (Jared) Johnson, Nicole (Cody Phillips) Martin, Jake (April Kath) Mizener, Sarah Ludeman, Scott Gorsuch. Great grandchildren Hayleigh and William Johnson, Evelyn Ludeman, Elias Pueblita, and Frederick Phillips. Brother, Wilfred Ludeman, sister-in-law Peg (Dean) Lucey, Black Earth, sister-in-law Janice Orcutt, Greendale, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Bertha, parents, Arthur & Lillian Ludeman, and sister, Caroline.

The family is forever grateful and wishes to thank Fairhaven with their wonderful caretakers, as they took care of both our mother and father until their lives ended. We also wish to thank Rainbow Hospice for the help and support when dad was near the end of life; their love, care, and support was a comfort to the family.

Visitation will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Whitewater from 10 AM – 11 AM on Tuesday, Feb. 12 before the funeral service which will begin at 11:00 AM. Frank will be cremated and entombed with his wife, Bertha and will be laid to rest together for eternity.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Patrick’s Catholic Church and Rainbow Hospice Care.

Karen Fay Hatfield, age 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2019 with her husband Roger at her side.

Karen was born on April 15, 1939, in her uncle’s home in Green Grove, WI to Roscoe and Inez (Hardrath) Alexander. Her early years were spent with her brothers on the farm outside of Owen-Withee. Growing up with 3 brothers, Karen was quite a tomboy holding her own with them playing on the farm. Stories have been told that these four, along with their cousins, got into quite a bit of mischief over the years. She attended a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade, and attended Owen-Withee High School, where she participated in choir, orchestra and graduated valedictorian of her class. She spent practically every weekend attending dances in Atwood, WI with friends and her brother Gordy.

On March 30, 1968, she married her true love, Roger Hatfield in Waukegan, IL.  They were engaged six weeks after their first date, and married 3 months later. They stuck together through thick and thin, living in a number of places including Waukegan, IL; Hiles and Marinette, WI, and ultimately moved to Janesville to be closer to family.  She had a variety of jobs over the years, including the all important role of homemaker. She was a lifelong learner, and at the age of 50 earned her associates degree in business and became the manager of Marinette’s B.Dalton bookstore, where she worked until she retired at the age of 64. Karen, along with Roger, enjoyed the big joys of life, such as family weddings, births and milestone birthday celebrations of many family members. Just as important were the day to day joys of visiting with friends and family around a campfire, playing cards and talking smart, cheering on favorite sports teams, or finding the God moments in everyday life. Perhaps her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren or attending their sporting events, choir concerts, or plays and musicals. She was extremely proud to be a grandparent and seeing them succeed and enjoy life in their own ways brought her such joy.

Family and friends were the most treasured aspect of Karen’s life. She especially enjoyed hosting family and friends in her home with her cooking and baking. Her home was never without some sort of baked good. She prepared enough to feed an army and always offered guests to take some home with them. Karen had numerous interests including:  cooking, baking, reading, gardening and sewing. She was an avid sports enthusiast (at a young age she dreamed of being a sports reporter).  Although she enjoyed watching almost any sport, she was happiest when she was cheering on the Badgers, Packers and the Chicago Cubs. She was thrilled to witness the Cubbies win the World Series in 2016.

Karen is survived by her husband, Roger; son, Mark (Lisa) Hatfield of Monument, CO; daughter, Becky (Alan) Hoesly of Whitewater; grandchildren, Emma Hatfield of Greeley, CO, Jeremy Hoesly of Madison and Hannah Hoesly of Whitewater.  She is further survived by her brother Rod in Tennessee; sisters-in-laws, Carol Alexander (Roscoe, IL), Karolyn Tscharnak (Whitewater, WI), Carmen Hatfield (Benton, KY), Dianne Nelson (Aurora, CO), Phyllis Hatfield (Sun City West, AZ); brother-in-law, Clarence Hatfield (Benton, KY) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Karen was welcomed to heaven by her parents Roscoe and Inez Alexander; siblings, Carlyle and Gordy Alexander; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Floyd and Elizabeth Hatfield; and brothers-in law, Tom Wilke and Sigurd Nelson.

Karen had a strong faith, and was a member of Richmond United Methodist Church.  Visitation for family and friends will take place on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 4-7pm at the Nitardy Funeral Home, 550 N. Newcomb St., Whitewater, WI.  Services in Karen’s honor for family and friends will be at 11am on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 145 S. Prairie St, Whitewater, WI.  The family suggests expressions of sympathy to First United Methodist Church Mission Trip Scholarship Fund in Karen’s memory.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to family and friends for their overwhelming support. A special thanks to Bryan West Hospital staff in Lincoln, NE for their recent care of Karen.
