Devin Bazeley finished 4th in the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. Jack Mayer finished 2nd in the 50 Freestyle.

Both 200 Medley Relays went best times with the following swimmers putting in season-best splits: Aidan Coburn, Wesley Salverson, Devin Bazeley and Jack Mayer. The Medley Relay of Michael Kuhl, Young Liang, Devin Bazeley and Jack Mayer finished in 4th place.

The Whippets were able to post 100% best times in the 200 Freestyle with the following swimmers: Jonathan Manriquez, Antonio Aranda, Aidan Coburn, Devin Bazeley and Young Liang. Tony dropped a whopping 17 seconds, Aidan dropped 5 seconds and Devin dropped 2.5 seconds. Devin improved his time on the Top 10 list and is now 4th overall, while Young Liang improved his time on the Top 10 list and is 3rd overall. Zach Tomomitsu swam an outstanding 50 Freestyle, improving his previous time by over 3 seconds. Jack Mayer ended up 2nd in the 50 Freestyle with his lifetime best time posting a new time to the Top 10 list earning the 4th spot. Shawn Chan continued to drop time in the 100 Butterfly and improved his Top 10 time and place. Shawn is now 9th overall on the Top 10 list. Jovany Manriquez did an outstanding job in the 100 Freestyle dropping 5 seconds off his season-best time. We had several nice 500 Freestyle swims, including Antonio Aranda winning his heat and dropping 23 seconds off his time. Wesley Salverson also put in a great race dropping 11 seconds off his best time. Our 200 Freestyle Relays swam well with Aidan Coburn leading off with a 26.71, 2 seconds faster than his lifetime best time. Antonio Aranda continued to impress with his first 50 Freestyle under 30 seconds. Zach Tomomitsu had another great race in the 100 Backstroke dropping 3 seconds and Jonathan Manriquez dropped 9 seconds off his 100 Backstroke. Jon Chan did a fantastic job in the 100 Breaststroke dropping 5 seconds off his best and Young Liang became the Conference Champion in the 100 Breaststroke with a commanding win and season-best time. Our 400 Freestyle Relays were the last races for the day, several swimmers had great races including Antonio Aranda (-6 seconds), Jovany Mariquez (-5 seconds), Zach Tomomitsu (-7 seconds), Michael Kuhl (-1.5 seconds) and Devin Bazeley (-1 second).

I am very proud of all the boys and we are excited to see what we can do at the Sectional Meet.

Cushman Brings Home Wrestling Conference Championship, Team Runner-Ups

Article by John Schimming

Saturday the Whitewater Wrestling team traveled to Beloit Turner to participate in the Rock Valley Conference Tournament. The day started with a three-team race for the team championship. When the dust settled the whippets found themselves in second place in the RVC for the season. Combining the teams 7-1 conference record (10-1 overall) and their finish on Saturday the whippets finished in 2nd place in the conference. Evansville continued to be the team to beat as they have won conference titles since Whitewater was the last team to win the title in 2011.

Individually the whippets had 6 competitors in the championship match. David Cushman won an exciting overtime match to win his first Rock Valley Championship. He started the day with a bye then had a great third period pin against a very good opponent from Brodhead. He then secured the championship defeating an opponent who has improved very much over the course of the year with a takedown in the overtime period.

Joining Cushman in the finals was Cody Gamble, Jaden Salmieri, Carter Friend, Will Leibbrand and Arturo Franco. All five of these guys wrestled great matches in the opening round and the semi-final round to reach the finals. Unfortunately, they came up just short  of bringing home a championship. All but Franco are underclassmen so they have something to strive for in the future when it comes to the RVC tournament.

Closing out the medalists for the whippets and bringing home a bronze medal was Trenten Zahn and Gehrig Monday. Each of them lost their semi-final match and came back to win their next two.

The team is next in action when they start the post-season as they travel to East Troy to participate in a very competitive regional. The top two in each weight class will qualify for the sectional tournament the following Saturday. The top team will qualify for Team Sectionals. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 am.
