Historic Walking Tour of Whitewater on Sat., 8/10

Go back in time as historian Carol Cartwright of the Whitewater Historical Society takes you on an historic walking tour through Downtown Whitewater on Sat., 8/10 at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. Allow Carol’s vast knowledge of Whitewater to take you back to the founding of our fair city, and through its advances in history as she guides you through some of downtown’s most interesting sites. Cost is $15, with tickets available at the starting point, The Book Teller, 171 W. Main Street. The distance will be reasonably short and the tour will last between one and one-half hours.

Roberta’s Art Gallery Seeks Whitewater Arts Alliance Artists for September Show

The Roberta Avonn Fiskum Art Gallery on the UW-Whitewater Campus is seeking the work of Whitewater Arts Alliance artists for their show that runs September 9 through the 25th. Whitewater Arts Alliance members are invited to show 2D and/or 3D, original work, which is due August 18.  Anyone can become a member of the WAA by signing up for a yearly membership to not only enter the show, but to enjoy the yearly benefits of the organization. Individuals should submit the membership form alongside the show entry with relevant joining fee (see website for membership perks/details: www.whitewaterarts.org/membership.)

Kim Adams, Assistant Director of the University Center, said, “I am looking forward to continuing our collaborative relationship with the Whitewater Arts Alliance.  There is so much talent to acknowledge and celebrate with the members’ exhibit.”

Participation Details: • Artists may submit up to four pieces for consideration. • Accepted artwork must be on display for the entirety of the exhibition. No early take down, no exceptions. • 2D Artwork: Work must be framed or mounted canvas. All pieces must be wired for hanging, so saw tooth hangers, no maximum size. Maximum piece weight of 100 pounds or less. Materials for non-standard installation methods must be provided by the artist of work 25 pounds or more. • 3D Artwork: Work must come with installation instructions. Pedestals are provided unless otherwise requested by the artist. Materials for non-standard installation methods must be provided by the artist. • WAA is happy to assist with sales of artwork. This show is COMMISSION FREE! Artists, however, are responsible for paying their own sales taxes (Wisconsin 5.5%).

Roberta’s Art Gallery collaborates with the UW-Whitewater Department of Art and Design and the Crossman Gallery in developing exhibit ideas, co-sponsoring exhibits, sharing resources, and offering hands-on experience to student interns. The Gallery also collaborates with campus departments, student organizations and community groups in coordinating and sponsoring exhibits. In addition, Roberta’s Art Gallery provides experiential art related programs to students and the campus community.

The mission of the Whitewater Arts Alliance is to promote the visual and performing arts through an alliance of artists, individuals, educational resources, and organizations to promote creativity and diversity that will serve to educate and enrich the lives of the residents of the Whitewater community and surrounding areas.

UW-Whitewater to offer cooling centers Thursday, Friday

UW-Whitewater will open various facilities as cooling centers in response to the heat advisory issued in Rock and Walworth counties.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Thursday and Friday as temperatures are expected to reach the 90s with the heat index reaching 100 degrees, according to a news release.

These facilities will be air conditioned and open to the public:

  • James R. Connor University Center, 228 Wyman Mall, Whitewater, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday.
  • Andersen Library, 141 Wyman Mall, Whitewater, 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday.
  • Williams Center, 907 W. Schwager Drive, Whitewater, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday.
  • UW-Whitewater at Rock County campus, 2909 Kellogg Ave., Janesville, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday-Friday.

Warhawks: Former catcher Wegner dies of cancer

July 17 (Daily Jefferson County Union) – Justin Wegner, a former catcher for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team who battled a rare form of cancer for more than three years, died last week. He was 22.

A celebration of Wegner’s life will take place at St. Raphael Catholic Church at 1215 Modaff Rd. in Naperville, Ill., this Thursday, July 18, with visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass Friday, July 19 at the church starting at 10:30 a.m.

Wegner played for the Warhawks in 2016, batting .250 with one home run and had nine RBIs during 24 games, including 14 starts. A member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, Wegner helped UW-Whitewater reach the NCAA Division III World Series that season after winning the NCAA Central Regional in Sauget, Ill.

Following the 2016 season, Wegner was diagnosed with a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma, a type of cancer.

Wegner captivated hundreds of student-athletes at UW-Whitewater, which held fundraisers for his #JwegStrong campaign during several athletics events.

Members of the UW-Whitewater community took to social media to share memories of the courageous battle Wegner fought.
