Alice’s Ordinary People: Screening & Discussion at Library

The Irvin L. Young Memorial Library will be having a screening and discussion of Alice’s Ordinary People.  The Director of the film will be in attendance to lead the discussion on Thursday, May 16, 6:00 p.m.

Alice’s Ordinary People is a documentary about Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama, and her great contribution in the field of politics is the thread which connects the two. The introduction and discussion will be led by the filmmaker, Craig Dudnick. This presentation is free and open to everyone.  Refreshments will be served.

Mukwonago Area Community Choir presents “Songs of Americana” at Fairhaven on May 11

The Mukwonago Area Community Choir will be performing at Fairhaven on Saturday, May 11 at 6 p.m. The theme is “Songs of Americana” and we are celebrating the folk and less formal music from America’s past. Our selections will include: God Bless America, He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands, Erie Canal, America the Beautiful, Cindy, I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair, Streets of Laredo, and many more. Our hope is to show how we can unify our people through song no matter their political ideology, socioeconomic status, race, gender, religion, etc. We are a nation of one people, “E pluribus unum,” and together we are stronger than we are as individuals. Music has the power to bring us together for the greater good of our nation and these songs are our heritage and strength. A free-will offering will be taken to support the UW-W InterVarsity Christian Ministries.

Morgan Radaj Earns Girl Scout Scholarship

Cristen Incitti, COO of Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland, presents WHS senior Morgan Radaj with a Girl Scout scholarship

Morgan Radaj, a senior at Whitewater High School, received the Loretta Himmelsbach Scholarship. This scholarship is endowed by its namesake – a lifetime Girl Scout who led the Black Hawk Girl Scout Council for many years. Loretta established this scholarship to honor a Gold Award Girl Scout who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to community service, education and the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Morgan earned her Girl Scout Gold Award when she was a freshman in high school (the average age to earn the Gold Award is 17!) Morgan’s ambitious project showcased her leadership skills and involved multiple components to address feeding a hungry world – a key feature of her project was when she organized more than 500 volunteers to pack over 100,000 meals that were shipped and distributed to needy families in Kenya.

Morgan stated, “Girl Scouting shaped me and the foundation of my life and morals. I will always be a Girl Scout. No matter how far I go, I am surrounded all around the world by my sisters. I will forever be a part of that sisterhood of girls who know that the world will never change for the better if we don’t do something about the problems.”

Morgan is among four girls in Badgerland’s 23-county jurisdiction who received a Girl Scout Scholarship this year. Morgan was honored and recognized at the Girl Scout Awards Ceremony in April which also celebrated this year’s Gold Award and Silver Award honorees. “There is something so special when we get to see, in person, the significant impact this organization is making on our girls, and in turn, the impact the girls are making on their communities,” said Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland CEO Marci Henderson.

According to a study by the Girl Scouts Research Institute, Girl Scouts who earn the highest awards receive greater lifetime benefits than their peers, reporting a more positive sense of self, more leadership experiences, and greater life satisfaction, life success, community service commitment and civic engagement.
“These girls have risen to high challenges,” Henderson added. “They’ve distinguished themselves through determination and a sincere drive to make the world a better place. They have demonstrated great leadership. They are making a difference. They exemplify what it means to be a Girl Scout.”

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council serves more than 7,300 girl members in 21 counties in south-central and southwest Wisconsin, as well as Houston County in Minnesota and Allamakee County in Iowa. The council has service centers in Madison, La Crosse, Platteville and Janesville. For more information click here .

Optimist Club’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt Not Deterred by Weather

Despite Wisconsin’s cold and windy weather, on April 13 from 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m., approximately 150 individuals attended the UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club’s Easter Egg Hunt located at Whitewater Middle School. UW-Whitewater Student Optimists and service-learning students also helped facilitate the event.

As the event began, the Easter Bunny and McGruff the Crime Dog were ushered in on a Whitewater fire truck and stayed to have fun and take photographs with the children. As soon as the hunt began, the children sprinted to the Easter eggs as fast as they could. This event was aimed towards 5th graders and under, and all the children in attendance were given a goodie bag once they turned in their Easter eggs. Hidden within the goodie bags were a few golden eggs for each age group. If a child found the golden egg, they were given an Easter Basket.
