LEAF AND YARD WASTE COLLECTION:

The City of Whitewater Department of Public Works will conduct a leaf and yard waste collection the:

• Week of November 5 – November 9
• Week of November 12 – November 16

Yard waste must be bagged in clear or transparent bags only.  The City offers Bio-Bags at the Finance Department free of charge while supplies last.  Yard waste will not be collected if not properly bagged or placed in non-transparent or black bags.  Please place your bagged yard waste on the curb by Monday, November 5, 2018. Brush will not be collected as part of the yard waste collection.  Residents requesting brush collection may call 473-0560 to make an appointment for pick up on Tuesdays.

NOTICE:   It is against City Ordinance Chapter 12.08 – Street Obstructions, Section: 12.08.010 – Prohibited to deposit any yard waste debris on city streets or right of ways other than City of Whitewater designated days.

COMPOST SITE CLOSING FOR THE SEASON

The last Wednesday the compost site will be open is Wednesday, October 31, 2018, from 2 pm to 6 pm. The site is located on the north end of Jefferson Street.  In addition, the last Saturday the compost site will be open is Saturday, November 10, 2018. The compost site will close for the season at 2 pm on Saturday, November 10, 2018.

City of Whitewater Holds Open House for Newly Renovated Wastewater Facility

The City of Whitewater welcomes the community to visit the newly renovated wastewater facility for an open house. The open house will take place on Tuesday, October 30th from 3 pm to 7 pm and is open to the public. Citizens are encouraged to tour the plant to view the new equipment. Citizens can also ask questions to learn how the facility works and services the City of Whitewater.

The wastewater facility is located at 109 County Road U, east of the Whitewater Greenhouse and shares a driveway with John’s Disposal.

On behalf of the League of Women Voters of the Whitewater Area and citizens of Wisconsin State Assembly District 43, I’d like to publicly thank candidates Don Vruwink and Gabriel Szerlong for participating in the League’s recent candidate forum for the State Assembly District 43 race.  Thirty citizens were in attendance and the candidates fielded nineteen questions during the 1-½ hour forum on issues including school safety, roads, economic development, and redistricting, to name just a few. Only two questions, known in advance by the candidates, came from the League board and they were turned to only when questions from the audience were exhausted with time remaining. The forum was both civil and informative – democracy at its very best.  At a time in our politics when there is great division and mistrust, the forum was an occasion for each candidate to simply state their views before the electorate.  We applaud their level of civic engagement in our democracy and wish them both the very best on Election Day.  There will be one winner on that day but at the forum, there were many. Voters win when they’re given opportunities to question candidates on issues that matter to them in order to make informed choices in the voting booth.

Whitewater Community Foundation Donation to Lakeview STEAM Center

Through a Whitewater Community Grant, we were able to buy 7 Ozobots. The 4th graders have enjoyed working with them and practicing problem-solving skills.

Donated dictionaries put to use by Lakeview 3rd graders

Thank you to Fairfield Grange for distributing dictionaries to Lakeview’s third-grade students! Students are excited to look up new words as they continue to grow in reading!

Lincoln 4th graders raise money for charity

Lincoln School fourth grade students Rowan and Madeline care deeply about animals.  They decided to put this passion to work by raising funds to help animals in need of homes or rehabilitation. Together, Rowan and Madeline made rubber band and paracord bracelets. They sold these bracelets to Lincoln students and made $200.00!  The proceeds will be sent to two groups that help animals. The first one, Paddy’s Paws, is a dog rescue whose primary goal is to find adoptive homes for amazing dogs that are located in shelters, rescues, and foster homes. The rescue is based in Fort Atkinson, but the majority of the dogs come from Houston, TX, where there is a huge amount of stray dogs.  The second group, Fellow Mortals, is a wildlife hospital located in Lake Geneva. The group provides rehabilitation to wildlife based on the belief that encouraging compassion in humans toward all life brings out the finest aspects of our humanity. This project has certainly brought out the finest in these two caring students! Lincoln School is proud of them and all its leaders who do things every day to make the world a better place.

Congratulations to Jakob Gmur for winning a national proficiency award in Diversified Horticulture at the FFA Convention in Indianapolis this week.

Another WIAA State CC meet is in the books as senior Nicole Tomomitsu and sophomore Trenten Zahn wrapped up their final races of the season at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Trenten raced first with the rain finally letting up making for a fun, yet slippery, race course in Division 2. He started out in 58th at the first mile and was looking good. While negotiating a sharp turn that was all mud he went down for the first time but bounced right back up and kept charging ahead. By the second mile, he moved up to 55th and was poised to make a strong final push but had another setback as he slipped again and went down a second time. Trenten used his skills as a multi-sport athlete from wrestling and knew that being on his knees he needed to get up as fast as possible and it was impressive to see! He raced his guts out and passed 8 more runners by the finish line to cross in 47th overall with a finish time of 17:19.2 with 151 runners in his race. Trenten gained invaluable experience in this race as an underclassman and was part of the Rock Valley’s strong showing of incredible strength at the state level. Three teams from the RVC finished in the top 6 (out of 16 teams) and four of the possible 10 medaling positions went to an RVC athlete.

Nicole followed in the final race of the day. As she passed by the coaching staff before the first mile she looked as though she had a grimace on her face. She passed by the first mile mark in 122nd and faded to 130th as the course got hillier in the second mile but got it together and moved up to 121st by the finish out of 152 runners. Nicole stopped the clock at 21:54.0. No matter the race or season that Nicole has worn the word ‘Whitewater’ across her chest, she has proudly found a way to honor it and the word quit is not in her vocabulary. Nicole was able to wear the jersey at the state meet three times and perhaps the most impressive part is how she found a way to make it happen after a less than ideal junior year. Most athletes would have packed it in and decided that is just the way it needs to be. Nicole didn’t mail it in. Nicole races with heart, guts and passion. She finished her career with two honorable mentions, one second team and as a senior earned her first, 1st team all-conference honor in the Rock Valley Conference.

Additionally, both Trenten and Nicole can be proud of their academic accomplishments, as both will be earning academic all-state honors. Academic all-state honors are given out annually by the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association. In order to earn academic all-state, a student-athlete must be earning at least a 3.5 GPA. This will be Trenten’s first and Nicole’s third honor. Trenten and Nicole clearly define what it means to be a student athlete in the Whippet Cross Country program.

The No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team rolled up more than 550 yards of offense and forced three turnovers defensively Saturday in a 40-10 triumph at UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Menomonie, Wis.

The Warhawks’ win, coupled with UW-Oshkosh’s loss at UW-Stevens Point, clinched the program’s league record 36th WIAC championship and sealed the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, which begin Nov. 17.

UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Stevens Point next Saturday, Nov. 3, for Senior Day, Shriners Day and Military Appreciation Day at Perkins Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
