The Lady Whippet softball team came from behind to upset the Brodhead Cardinals to secure their first conference win of the season. Brodhead defeated Whitewater on Tuesday by a score of 7-2 but the Whippets evened things out with a 10-9 win on Thursday. The Cardinals took a 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning but the Whippets rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-3. Jacee Johnson had a double to score Alyssa Schumacher and then Sara Johnson singled to score Jacee. Whitewater added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 7-5. Brodhead scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 9-5. “Going into the bottom of the seventh inning things didn’t look good but I knew that our girls would not quit” Coach Sdano said. Whitewater would rally in the bottom of the seventh as Kailey Ruhl opened with a single. Alyssa Schumacher singled her to second and Jacee Johnson hit her second double of the game to score Kailey. Alyssa would score on a pitcher error and Jacee scored on a single by Elizabeth Katzman. With the score 9-8 and two outs, Morgan Gransee hit a slow roller towards first base that the pitcher mishandled. Her throw to first was in the dirt allowing Sara Johnson to tie the game. Katzman continued around third base as Brodhead’s first baseman retrieved the ball. The throw home was on target but Katzman slid under the catcher’s tag to give the Whippets a thrilling come from behind win. Sdano was excited with the way things turned out. “What a game! To be on the winning end of a game like that is fun. This also gives us confidence going into next week’s conference games against Clinton.”

Jacee Johnson and Alyssa Schumacher each had 3 hits while Sara Johnson had 2 hits. Alyssa pitched the first four innings and Jacee Johnson pitched the final three innings for the win. Whitewater is home on Tuesday, April 3 as they play host to the Clinton Cougars. They then travel to Clinton on Thursday, April 5. Game time is 4:45 pm. Please come out and support the Lady Whippets.
