The WIAA Regional Semifinal on Thursday evening was truly an unforgettable match. Your Whitewater Whippets traveled to MATC to take on the #7 seed St. Anthony.

The first 20 minutes of the match were back and forth between the two programs however, in the 19′ minute, and then again 2 minutes later, St. Anthony put the ball in the back of the net. Down 2-0 WHS refused to give up and managed to claw back a goal with just 4 minutes remaining in the half. Ben Crone played a great diagonal ball to Elijah Gutierrez who squared it to Luis Menjivar and the score was 2-1 going into half time.
Early in the second half, Elijah Guitierrez scored the game tying goal with an assist from Derick Martinez. Frank Mbifi, Anjay Magana, Hector Aranda, and Aaron Garcia did an excellent job constantly stopping almost everything thrown at them and goalkeeper Asher Banger made two extraordinary saves to keep the score level.
Regulation time was over but two 10′ halves were both played without either team scoring. With about 8 minutes left in the second period of extra time, a dense fog rolled in from out of nowhere, effectively setting the tone for what was about to transpire. The Whippets and the Roman Legion lined up to take five penalty kicks each in order to decide the outcome of the match. Through two sensational penalty saves from Asher Bangert and conversions from Elijah Gutierrez, Derick Martinez, Ben Crone, and Wesley Baker, Whippet Soccer ended the evening in celebration.
Your Whippets will now travel to New Berlin Eisenhower on Saturday 10/24 for the Regional Finals @ 4:00 pm. We hope to see you there and Go, Whippets!
