The Whitewater Unified School District has enjoyed support for many referendums over the years, but that record appears to have been broken in the November 3 election. Unofficial results show 3398 no votes versus 3763 voting yes. Affirmative votes would then represent approximately 47.5%.

Whitewater would not be alone in this outcome. It appears that operating referendums in Delavan-Darien, Palmyra-Eagle and Fort Atkinson school districts failed. Fort’s loss was especially decisive, with the unofficial result showing 57.5% opposed.

David Crowley was elected governor. Whitewater area legislators Sen. Mark Spreitzer and Rep. Brienne Brown have been reelected. It appears that the state will have a “triumvirate” government, with the governor being a Democrat as well as the majorities in both houses of the legislature.

One of the biggest surprises of the evening was that 4-term U.S. Representative Bryan Steil conceded to political novice Mitchell Berman, an ER nurse and Democrat. It appears that there will be a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate as well as the House of Representatives.
