Obituary: David William Strauss, 88

David William Strauss was born at home in the town of Portland, Wisconsin on January 25, 1937, to Reinhart and Ella (Gruenwald) Strauss. He was the youngest of five children. He attended elementary school at Hubbleton Elementary and attended Waterloo High School, graduating in 1954. He attended Columbia County Teachers College, graduating in 1960. He graduated from UW Whitewater with a Bachelors of Education in 1966. He completed his Masters Degree in Reading in 1973.

David worked at the Waterloo Shoe Factory, the Faville Grove School, Milford Grade School, and Lincoln Elementary School in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

On May 18, 2002, David married Karen Schroeder in a ceremony at First English Lutheran Church in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

His hobbies included gardening, reading, traveling, hiking, and volunteering in the community.

David was a life member of the Wisconsin Education Association and the National Education Association. He is a former member of the South Kettle Moraine Reading Council and the Breakfast Kiwanis of Whitewater.

David is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carlton, Lawrence, and Raymond Strauss, sister Beatrice Dahnk, sisters-in-law Gretchen Strauss and Helen Strauss and by one great grandchild.

David is survived in life by Karen Strauss, Lori Strauss (Nathan Janusz), Kevin (Andrea) Strauss, Christopher Strauss, David Schroeder (Lynne Havertine), Bryan (Lisa) Schroeder, and Paula (Bill) Brandl. He has 15 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. at the church until the time of service. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to Lutherdale Camp or Rainbow Hospice.

We want to thank Rainbow Hospice and Visiting Angels (especially Amy) for their compassionate support during David’s journey.
