Lyon Scores 41 as Whippets Top Brodhead

Casey Lyon’s 41 points and 14 rebounds led the Whitewater Boys’ Basketball team to an 87-79 home win over Brodhead on Thursday, January 29th.  Matthew Carollo chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaron Garcia added 11 points, as the Whippets held off the Cardinals to finish January with a victory.

Whitewater started the game fast, jumping out to a 7-2 lead, and didn’t look back in the first half, building up a 17-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes left. Brodhead closed the gap, but the Whippets still led 40-29 at the half.

The two teams played pretty evenly the first 10 minutes of the second half, with Whitewater maintaining a 9-14 point lead. Then Brodhead went on a run to get within one, 62-61, at the 6 1/2-minute mark.  The Whippets quickly rebuilt the lead with a three pointer by Matt Carollo, a two-point basket by Evan Amundsen, and two free throws by Casey Lyon. Casey also made six free throws in the last 40 seconds to ice the game for Whitewater.

The victory breaks a six-game losing streak, as Whitewater is now 3-6 in the conference and 6-10 overall. The next game is a crossover conference game at Walworth/Big Foot on Tuesday, February 3rd.  The next home game is Friday, February 6th, against Beloit Turner.
