The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s soccer team recorded its third straight shutout Tuesday afternoon, October 15, with a 1-0 victory over Central (Iowa) in a non-conference affair at Fiskum Field, the final non-league game for UW-W this season.
The Warhawks (8-4-3 overall) extended their active unbeaten streak to eight matches thanks to another stellar performance by the back line and senior goalkeeper Sara Klimisch and a goal by sophomore forward Savannah Curtis in the 39th minute.
Eleven minutes passed from kickoff before freshman forward Olivia May put the first shot on goal. The Dutch (5-7-2) tallied two corner kicks over the next six minutes, but UW-Whitewater held strong in front of net.
The two teams exchanged possessions before Curtis rebounded a shot by sophomore midfielder Madison Mikalauski that hit the post. It was Curtis’ fifth goal of the season and MIkalauski’s first assist.
The Warhawks registered three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Klimisch saved two shots in a four-minute span near the midway point of the period.
Curtis earned another chance in the 82nd minute, but missed her chip wide left. Junior forward Anna Brodjian squared up a shot just outside of the 18-yard box in the final minute, but it was saved by the goalkeeper.
Klimisch (5-3-2) totaled three saves for her third straight shutout and fifth on the season.
UW-Whitewater resumes Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Oct. 19 at UW-Stevens Point. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
