On September 30th, the Whitewater Girls’ Tennis Team had their senior night at the Whitewater High School tennis courts against Delavan-Darien High School.
Whippet Tennis
The Whippets won the dual with a 5-2 win giving Liz Servin, Isabel Aranda, Stephanie Wence, Jackie Franco, Maritza Vidales, and Aimee Servin a win in their final conference tennis match of the season.
The Whippets had a very successful senior night, and the rest of the team will be working hard the rest of the year to make sure they finish off the season strong.

The 8th Annual Southern Lakes Conference (SLC) Sports reunion will be held at 11:30 on Oct. 11 at Someplace Else in Flkhorn. Classes from ’55 to ’62 with the old SLC (Whitewater, Delavan, Lake Geneva, Wilmot, Elkhorn, Mukwonago, Burlington, and East Troy) are invited for lunch and cash bar. Whitewater Volleyball hosted Delavan-Darien in a conference match-up on Tuesday evening, October 1, in their Play for Trey Event — a night to remember Treyton Kilar, a young boy whose life was taken far too soon, and also to raise awareness around the importance of responsible decision-making.

Both teams battled all night; however, Delavan ultimately took the match 3-2. Whitewater came out ready to play in set 1 and took charge, defeating Delavan 25-21. Following set one, Delavan relaxed into play and took sets 2 and 3 (25-17, 25-12). Whitewater was not ready to call it a night yet and pushed the match to 5 by winning the fourth 25-23. After a slow start in set 5 (Whitewater was down 1-7 and 5-11) Whitewater battled back to tie the set at 11 – 11 and then 13-13. A few unlucky balls gave Delavan the advantage and they took the set (15-13) and the match.
The Whippet Girls’ Swim Team traveled to Jefferson to compete in the EagleJay Invite on Saturday, September 28. The girls certainly showed up and entertained; they went 17 of 20 best times, captured two medals, and broke a school record!

Makayla Bazeley had a phenomenal day in the water going 4/4 best times. She started the day with an event win in the 200 Freestyle going a time of 2:00.06. In the 200 Freestyle Relay she led off with a 25.84 and in the 400 Freestyle Relay anchored with a time of 56.17. Makayla also had a sensational swim in the 100 Backstroke. She won the event by over 10 seconds with a time of 59.64. With that time Makayla is now the new SCHOOL RECORD HOLDER in the 100 Backstroke. Congrats, Makayla!
Charlotte Hajewski continues to improve on her time in the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. She had an 8th place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:22.83, which is a lifetime best! In the 500 Freestyle she finished 12th overall and went a best time of 6:25.76.
In the 50 Freestyle we had a handful of swimmers go best times including Caitlin Alford (40.87), Lucy Davis (32.71), Emerson Dunham (29.74), Maya Davis (37.39), and Maggie Maas (29.62). We are excited to see them all swimming so fast!
Georgia Esch was the lone Whippet swimmer in the 100 Butterfly; she continues to get better and faster at her race every week!
In the 100 Freestyle, we saw some really great time drops including Caitlin Alford going a 1:37.99 (4 second drop), Laken DePorter going a 1:25.66 (3 second drop), Zoe Zei going a 1:32.32 (2 second drop), and Maggie Mass going a 1:05.22 (1 second drop)!
Emerson Dunham and Lucy Davis both swam a really strong 500 Freestyle race. Emerson Dunham swam a great race finishing 7th overall and dropped nearly 12 seconds going a time of 6:05.90. Lucy Davis also had a great time drop of over 8 seconds with a time of 6:59.94.
Maya Davis was the lone Whippet Swimmer in the 100 Breaststroke. Maya week after week continues to improve her stroke technique, and its really paying off when it comes to race day. She dropped nearly 3 seconds and is now under the 1:40 mark with a time of 1:39.72
It was a great day of racing! We can’t wait to watch them compete again at their next dual meet. The Whippets are coming back to Jefferson on Tuesday, October 1. The meet starts at 5:30 pm, and we hope to see you there!

Emme Bullis, Cal Poly senior volleyball player and Whitewater High School Class of 2021, has been named Setter of the Week for the Big West Conference. This is the second time this season, and the seventh time in her career with the Cal Poly Mustangs, that Bullis has earned this honor. Bullis is averaging 10.71 assists per set, leading the conference and ranking her 15th in NCAA Division I.

“The sun set over Van Steenderen Softball Complex while a cotton candy September sky graced the background. Excitement filled the brisk Thursday evening air while players wrapped up their final warm-ups before taking the field – this time under a new circumstance.
The Warhawks played under the lights for the first time at home.
UW-Whitewater softball unveiled their new lighting system in the team’s Sept. 26 purple and black scrimmage. The lighting system allows Warhawk softball to host night games, eliminating previous issues where games were called due to player safety.
“It opens up so many more opportunities for our program,” head coach Brenda Volk said. “Our goal is always to provide the best experience possible for our student-athletes and I think this is just one more thing that can do just that.”
The lighting system provides an added flexibility when softball hosts WIAC or NCAA tournament games, as previous games needed proper scheduling times to avoid calling games short.
“We have had a handful of games over the years that have been called due to darkness,” Volk said. “It’s just a relief to know that won’t ever have to happen again.”
The Whippet Cross Country Teams traveled to Janesville to compete in the 86th annual Midwest Invitational hosted by Janesville Craig at Blackhawk Golf Course on Saturday, September 28. In this exceptional invite, 51 teams toed the starting line for some very large race fields and elite-level competition. This meet has roughly 3,000 athletes compete in 7 races (including MS) and is the oldest inter-state meet in the country. On the girls’ side, there were thirteen teams ranked across all divisions and from out-of-state competition. On the boys’ side, this meet included fourteen ranked teams from the state. This competition tends to bring out the best in everyone, and Whitewater didn’t disappoint. Several athletes were able to walk away with lifetime bests, season bests, or running one of the fastest times of the year. This was all despite some pretty warm weather conditions and running in races with over 500 runners which doesn’t allow for much movement within the race itself.
On the varsity girls’ side, Athena Soto led the team with Carley Boudreau not far behind. Despite having an issue with her shoe, Mady Hefty toughed out her race and was the team’s 3rd runner. Other runners who had a particularly strong day were Ema Aranda who was able to run her lifetime best today and Sami Van Daele not far off her personal best. Lucy Troxel rounded out the varsity squad with her lifetime best as well. It was a good showing by the girls’ team which placed 35th out of 51 teams. In the White race, Delaney Hammack was able to carve out her lifetime best with a strong start and riding the wave to a time of 25:39.

On the boys’ side, Jack Hefty led the team with a top 10 finish. This super impressive finish also led to a new lifetime best of 15:46. Miles Nickelsburg is putting things together at the right time and was able to dip under 18 minutes for the first time this season. Andrew O’Toole raced to a new lifetime best along with Onyx Thompson and Isaac Straight. Overall, it was a really good day for the varsity boys’ team. In the Blue race, Marcus Roselle ran his second straight lifetime best of the three from our team that entered this race. Finally, leading the Whippets in the White race was Isaiah Mendez who has been battling an ankle injury and was the team’s top finisher despite some very warm temperatures for their race.

The Whippet Girls’ Swim Team hosted Badger and Platteville/Lancaster in their first home meet of the season on Tuesday, September 24! The night was filled with lots of best times and some new races for individuals!
Whippet Swim Team
Maggie Maas put on a gutsy performance in the 200 Freestyle. She won the event against Platteville/Lancaster and pushed the Badger swimmers until the very end. Maggie’s performance was a lifetime best for her, going a time of 2:24.76! Lucy Davis has really found her niche in the 200 Freestyle and continues to knock more and more time off; she swam a stellar 2:31.30!
In the 200 IM, Grace Coleman took on the battle for the first time and crushed it! We are excited to see her improvement in this event moving forward in the season. Makayla Bazeley also swam a great race winning the event against Platteville/Lancaster; she went a time of 2:19.54.
Laken DePorter went 4/4 on the night. She dropped nearly 2 seconds in her 50 Freestyle going a 35.75, she broke the 1:30 mark in her 100 Freestyle going a time of 1:28.38, and she also improved her 50 free relay split time and 100 free relay split time!
Charlotte Hajewski continues to improve on her 500. She won the event against Platteville/Lancaster with a time of 6:26.29.
Both of our 200 Freestyle Relays had some great races. Some notable splits came from Lucy Davis who led off the relay to go a lifetime best in the 50 Free with a time of 32.93, Atreya Wilson who went a 34.57 in her 50 free split, Maya Davis who also led off to race against her sister posting a best time in the 50 free with a time of 37.64, and Caitlin Alford who continues to improve her time!
In the 100 Backstroke, Marijose Verduzco swam a close race against Platteville/Lancaster taking second and improved her time by 4 seconds!
In the 400 Freestyle Relay consisting of Makayla Bazeley, Lucy Davis, Charlotte Hajewski, and Emerson Dunham, all swimmers posted new best times for the season! Makayla led off with a 55.64, Lucy split a 1:09.63, Charlotte split a 1:09.30, and Emerson anchored with a 1:06.15.
The girls travel to Jefferson High School to compete in the EagleJay Invite on Saturday, September 28. The meet starts at 10 am. We hope to see you there!

Monroe defeated the Whippet Football Team 39-6 on Friday, September 20.
Coach Sam Bartlett stated, “Monroe is one of those teams that plays extremely hard and disciplined. When you play with both of those it leads to a lot of success, which is evident. Coach Witt is doing a great job with them. They came out of the gates ready to go.
We came out with fire but did not start the game off disciplined. Our discipline improved throughout the game. We also played with fire and energy the entire game. I was extremely proud of our talk to teammates being positive and constructive. Those are traits that will serve us well these next couple of weeks.
We have work to do to improve on the field. A big focus of practice this week will be great effort and discipline in all areas. If we focus on those two areas, we will be successful. I look forward to our game against East Troy and look forward to the competition.”

The Whippet Cross Country team headed to Kenosha to compete in the 56th annual Angel Invitational hosted at the nationally recognized cross country course at UW-Parkside on Saturday, September 21. The weather was a touch better than it had been the last two weeks with the course running mostly through woods and shady sections, which was a welcome variation. Although this course was challenging, it didn’t stop the team from giving their best efforts on this day.

Jack Hefty ran a strong race and looked good doing so. His effort secured the individual title, the first ever Whippet to win this meet in the 46 years that Whitewater has competed in the Angel Invitational. His time of 16:04 tied him for the 18th best time ever run on this course in the 56 years the meet has been held. Xavier Zei also ran a very strong race and finished in 30th place with a time of 17:28. Other varsity runners had a strong day including Onyx Thompson, who nearly ran a lifetime PR stopping the clock in 19:24, and Isaac Straight, setting a lifetime best of 19:47, to finish in 128th. The varsity boys’ team placed 11th out of 35 teams.
In the JV race, Wyatt Esch was the team’s top finisher in 41st with a time of 21:16. Marcus Roselle was firing on all cylinders and ran a lifetime best to be under 22 minutes for the first time in his life and stopped the clock in 21:54, good enough for 64th. The JV team also placed 11th overall.
Virginia Nelson stepped up her game and ran a new lifetime best by just one second but on a much more challenging course. This speaks volumes about her growth and continued improvement from week to week. Her time of 22:19 was strong enough to be 45th. Mady Hefty and Carley Boudreau ran together for much of the race before Mady emerged as the team’s second runner in 82nd with a time of 23:49, and Carley was 87th in 23:55. The varsity girls’ team placed 13th out of 34 teams.
The JV team was led by Lucy Troxel who was just a handful of seconds off her lifetime best on this hilly course. Her time of 25:18 placed her 25th overall. Delaney Hammack tied her previous lifetime best and placed 34th with a time of 25:41. As the team’s third runner, Mya Graves-Koran also tied her previous lifetime best in 26:45 to place 53rd.
