JV Gymnasts Host Home Meet

Whitewater JV Gymnastics kicked off a great start to the season last week. The girls have been working very hard on new routines and skills for the meet.

The balance beam was the highlight of the night for the girls. The four girls had a no fall beam routine. Gabriella Pena Perroni scored a high for her at 5.1.

Maddie Joseph and Emy Islas competed on bars. The girls are both freshmen and working very hard on new skills for the bar.

The vault exercises were competed by all freshmen. This was the first time for all five of them competing in a meet. Maggie Maas scored a 5.8, and Amaya Conner scored a 5.9.

Zoe Zei kicked off the floor exercise scoring a 4.7. We had four girls compete the floor exercise and all scored very well.

Whitewater Whippets Gymnastics will have another home meet January 30 at 6:00.

Whippet Wrestlers Takedown Jefferson to Finish Undefeated in Valley Division

On Thursday night, January 18, the Whitewater Wrestling Team hosted the Jefferson Eagles in a full night of wrestling, also honoring seniors and parents. The night kicked off with a whopping 38 JV matches, allowing for many wrestlers to have the opportunity to compete in front of their family and friends. Upon completion of the JV matches, 55+ wrestlers and managers recognized their parents, thanking them for their support over the course of the last eight weeks and continued support for the weeks ahead.

Parent Recognition

Coach Schimming then recognized the 17 seniors that are involved in the program: three managers – Mackenzie Schimming, Leah Newmann and Adrea Alcala and 14 wrestlers – Jason Villegas, Odair Porras, JJ Gonzalez, Nate Black, Avery Janovec, Sebastian Cuellar, Yovanni Rojas-Reyes, Jesus Barajas, Payton Lyon, Ethan Barels, Lauren Buehler, Giulia Ristagno, and Myia Cobbs. These students have been involved in wrestling since middle school, or for some, only this year. Thank you for your efforts in making coaching an enjoyable time for the coaches!

Whippet Senior Wrestlers and Managers

After all of the recognitions, the varsity competition got underway with our dual meet against Jefferson. The team wrestled very well. After seven matches, the team was still in a close dual, up 24-18, with JJ Gonzalez (157), Sebastian Cuellar (165), Payton Lyon (190), and Vicente (Junior) Soto (HWT) all winning by pin. The team then took a brief intermission so the pom squad could do a performance for the crowd; it was an outstanding performance and enjoyed by the crowd. Once wrestling action began again, the Whippets dominated the second half, winning all but one of the final seven matches to close out the victory 55-24. Those winning by pins in the final six were Connor Friend (132), Curtis Rossmiller (138), and Odair Porras (150). Winning by a technical fall (15 points) were Jasen Porras (113) and Jarvis Porcaro (120).

The win on the evening pushed the Whippets record to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Valley Division of the Rock Valley Conference, thus securing the championship for the Valley Division.

Coach Schimming was very impressed with the performance of all students involved during the events. Great job to all!

Lebanon, Tenn. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team set a number of records in a historic night in the Tennessee Collegiate Classic Friday night. The Warhawks broke the Division III and UWW record for total score, 194.450, while also setting team and individual records on the balance beam. The meet also featured three Division I opponents: Kent State, Ball State and Southeastern Missouri.

In addition to setting the Division III record, UW-Whitewater’s team total crushed the program record that had stood since 2018 by 0.75.

The Warhawks posted record book-worthy scores throughout the evening, but the final event of the night for UWW was a highlight. UW-Whitewater posted a team total of 48.700 on the balance beam to break the program record. Sarah Knetzke led the way with an incredible 9.925 to tie for first at the meet and set the program record. Her mark is the best on the apparatus for a Warhawk since Allyse Dieringer’s 9.900 in 2014. Chloe Hammond added a 9.85 to finish among the top 10 at the meet followed by Tegan Haberstock’s 9.725. Kelsey Kollhoff posted a 9.650 and Ashnaya Gupta rounded out the scoring five with a 9.550.

UW-Whitewater registered the third-highest team totals in each of the other three events – 48.850 on the floor, 48.400 on the vault and 48.500 on the bars.

The Warhawks opened the meet on the floor exercise. Carleigh Moore’s fantastic performance scored a 9.850, tied for third-best in program history. Haberstock added a top 15 mark in the UWW record book with a 9.800 in the event. Elena Bailey and Knetzke posted 9.750’s while Danielle Dudziak registered a score of 9.700.

Moore paced UWW on the vault with a score of 9.775, tied for 14th in the UWW record book. Dudziak added a 9.725 followed by 9.650’s from Ava Pesch and Elena Bailey. Kora Donley wrapped up the scoring five with a 9.600.

On the uneven bars, Kollhoff and Paige Magel led the Warhawks with matching scores of 9.775, tied for 11th-best in program history. Pesch, Hammond and Dudziak all registered matching scores of 9.650 in the event to add to the team total.

Ball State won the Tennessee Collegiate Classic (198.025) followed by Kent State (197.725), SEMO (197.050) and UWW.

The Warhawks return to Whitewater for their home-opener Saturday, January 27. UWW will host UW-La Crosse at 4 p.m. The Warhawks will celebrate the 10.0 Club, Youth Night and recognize the parents of the 2024 team.

No. 4 UW-W Women Remain Undefeated with Road Win

By Angela Kelm
Asst. Athletic Director for Sports Information

Platteville, Wis. – The No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team came back from a first half deficit to defeat UW-Platteville 67-42 on the road Wednesday. The Warhawks improved to 16-0 on the season and 5-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Box Score

The Warhawks trailed 27-21 at the half but allowed just 15 total second half points leading to the win. In the final 20 minutes of play, UWW outscored the Pioneers 46-15. UW-Whitewater also capitalized on Platteville miscues with a 24-10 sway in points off turnovers.

UWW struggled offensively in the first quarter shooting under 15-percent from the floor. The Warhawks picked it up in the second quarter hitting 56-percent of their shots before shooting 49-percent in the second half.

Coming out of the intermission, Aleah Grundahl knocked down the first bucket of the second half and Bri McCurdy followed with a three-pointer to pull UWW within one. Grundahl registered the steal and layin just seconds later to give the Warhawks a one-point lead, 28-27. The Pioneers hit the next field goal, but Mallory Oloffson responded with an old-fashioned three-point play to put UWW up 31-29 with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter. From that point, UW-Whitewater never looked back.

The Warhawks built a double figure lead over the next seven minutes. The margin eventually hit 27 late in the fourth with UWP tallying the final bucket of the game for the final, 67-42.

Grundahl led all scorers with 22 on 8-16 from the floor. She added five rebounds, four assists and five steals in the game. Kacie Carollo dropped in 14 points, all in the second half, on 5-8 from the floor, 1-1 from long range and 3-3 from the free throw line. She was a rebound shy of a double-double. Lunden Alexander was 4-5 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range for a 10-point outing adding five boards and three assists.

Whitewater Wrestling Team Gets Big Win

After hosting three large wrestling tournaments this season, the Whippets had the opportunity to host their first dual meet of the season on Thursday night. The Monroe Cheesemakers made their way to Whitewater to participate in a first ever dual meet against each other. Whitewater has often seen Monroe in tournaments but due to distance never scheduled a dual meet. This all changed as Monroe and Whitewater are both part of the Rock Valley Conference in the Rock Division. The coaching staff knew this was going to be a challenging home dual meet as Monroe has a very solid team this year.

Jesus Barajas

The dual started off at 138 pounds where Curtis Rossmiller came out strong but could not keep up the pace against a defending state qualifier and ended up getting pinned in the match. Traysen Thomason (144) followed up with a very well wrestled match picking up the decision to get the Whippets on the board. After a couple of weights going against the Whippets, Sebastian Cuellar (165) got things moving in the right direction for Whitewater in a tough match, coming up with a big pin to put the home team down 9-17. Jesus Barajas (175) followed with a very good match, nearly pinning his opponent on a couple of occasions but ended up getting a 10-3 victory and closing the gap to 12-17. Payton Lyon (190) put the Whippets on top with a second period pin. Ethan Barels followed with a very hard fought match coming up just short before Junior Soto got a forfeit at heavyweight putting the Whippets up 24-20 with five weights to go. At 113 Jasen Porras had the opportunity to see his way back on the mat after an early season injury, wrestling a very good match winning 8-4 and putting the Whippets up 27-24 with three to go. Jarvis Porcaro (120) got a major decision 12-4. Freshman Brady Friend walked out on the mat knowing that a victory by him would seal the win for the home team. Brady showed lots of grit, wrestling potentially the best match of the season winning 7-4 and sealing the win for the Whippets 34-25. The win improved their record to 7-1 on season and 3-0 in the conference.

The team is next in action on Thursday night, January 18, when they host the Jefferson Eagles. This will mark both Parents Night and Senior Night for the team. JV will start at 6:00 with the varsity competing at 7:00. The team would love to see a packed house in their battle against Jefferson.
