No. 10 Warhawk Football Claims Share of WIAC Title on Record Day, Punches Ticket to NCAA Playoffs Box Score

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater trounced UW-Stevens Point 79-10 to secure a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the 39th time in program history. The Warhawks set a number of program records in the win including points in a game surpassing the previous record of 75 that had stood since 2006.

The Warhawks hold a share of the league title with UW-La Crosse but earn the conference’s automatic bid into NCAA Division III playoffs with a victory over the Eagles this season.

UW-Whitewater dominated in the first half behind a record performance on the ground for Jaylon Edmonson. His four touchdowns tie the program record for rushing TDs in a game. In addition to the points record, UWW also broke team records for rushing touchdowns (10), touchdowns (11), points after touchdowns (11). The Warhawks 523 yards rushing is just 46 shy of the program record set in 1987.

The Pointers took the opening kick, drove down and hit a 30-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. After that, it was all UWW.
On the Warhawks’ second play from scrimmage, Edmonson went up the gut for 66 yards and his first touchdown. He scored again on his next carry, a 19-yard scamper up the middle to make it 14-3 on UWW’s next possession.

A fumble on UWSP’s punt was downed at the Pointers’ nine. Tamir Thomas was tapped for the carry and he followed Edmonson’s lead, going up the middle for a touchdown. The next drive featured a 44-yard Thomas rush to the one followed by an Edmonson punch in for his third rushing TD of the contest.

The Warhawks’ next score came through the air as Evan Lewandowski hit Tyler Holte for a 51-yard touchdown strike. The final score of the quarter came on a bad snap on a Pointer punt that went through the back of the endzone for a safety and a 37-3 UWW lead.

By halftime, the UW-Whitewater lead ballooned to 65-3.

UW-Stevens Point scored on a 33-yard pass play in the third. Preston Strasburg registered his second touchdown of the day on a 38-yard run and Alijah Maher-Parr wrapped up the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring.

The Warhawks registered 644 yards of offense in the game. Makaio Harn had a phenomenal second half with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Edmonson tallied the program record four TD carries with 112 yards on five rushes. Strasburg added 107 yards on the ground and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Lewandowski was 5-5 for 106 yards and the one passing TD. Jason Ceniti and Jackson Chryst captained the offense in the second half. Holte led the Warhawks with 84 yards on three receptions.

Defensively, Ethan Gallagher tallied eight tackles including a tackle for a loss of two yards and a quarterback hurry. Joey Antoniette posted seven tackles while Reed Farrington and Kyle Gallagher each posted sacks in the contest.

The Warhawks will find out where and who they’ll open the 2022 NCAA Division III playoffs with during the selection show Sunday evening. The first round of playoffs is scheduled for Saturday, November 19.

UW-W Men Top Augustana Behind Barnstable’s 27

UW-Whitewater Men Top Augustana Behind Barnstable’s 27  |  Box Score

By Angela Kelm, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 95-90 win at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois Tuesday night.

Miles Barnstable wrote his name in the UWW record book in his first collegiate outing. The freshman guard scored 27 on 5-6 from the field, 2-3 from three-point range and 15-16 from the free throw line. His 15 from the charity stripe is the fifth-most by a Warhawk in a game in program history and the most since 2003.

Teammate Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) shared team-high honors with Barnstable with 27 points going 11-18 from the floor and 4-4 from long range. Chislom bolstered the Warhawks with 20 points in the 20 minutes.

UW-Whitewater was efficient offensively in the contest shooting 56% from the field, 60% from downtown and 78% from the line. The Warhawks kicked it up a notch in the second half draining 68% of their shots from the floor and 80% from beyond the arc to hold off the Vikings.

The game was close throughout with nine lead changes and ten ties in the 40-minute contest. Augustana jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead right out of the gate. They extended the gap to seven, 12-5, just over four minutes in for their largest lead of the game.

Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine’s) gave UWW its first lead of the game, 15-14, on a free throw with 10:31 on the clock. He drained a triple in the Warhawks’ next possession. The rest of the first half was a battle of the bigs with Chislom exchanging buckets with the Vikings’ preseason All-American Dan Carr as the teams went into the intermission tied 42-42.

The second half came down to free throws. UW-Whitewater was 19-24 from the line while the defense limited the trips to the stripe for Augustana. The Vikings hit 7-14 in the final 20 minutes of action. Barnstable was 9-9 from the line to bolster his 17-point second half performance.

Barker and Nick Pierson joined Barnstable and Chislom in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Barker added a team-high five assists and three steals. Delvin Barnstable hauled in six rebounds to lead UWW.

Duo Runs Well at State Meet, Earns Academic Honors as Well

Saturday, October 29th, was a beautiful day for cross country! The Whippets headed to Wisconsin Rapids for the 2022 State Cross Country Meet, where Junior Nate Holden and Sophomore Jack Hefty competed against the best runners in the state. Overall, the D2 race was comprised of 146 competitors. A fast field and the support of their family, friends, and teammates had the Whippets out in flying fashion, as Hefty and Holden cruised through the first mile in 5:05 and 5:13, respectively.

The second mile of the course proved challenging, as expected, due to the hills, sharp turns, and elevation changes. Hefty held his Top-40 position through the 2-mile marker, reaching it in 10:52. Holden, in his first State XC appearance, arrived at that same mark in 11:35.

A similarly challenging third mile also contained its fair share of twists, turns, hills, and an all-out sprint to the finish line to complete the course. Hefty made up some ground in the final stretch, and was able to finish the race in a time of 17:06, while Holden crossed the finish line in 19:07. Hefty’s time was good for 30th place in the D2 field, while Holden finished 126th.

This race capped off an excellent season for both boys! This season was full of awards for Jack and Nate as they both earned first-team all-Rock Valley Conference honors earlier this season as well as state meet births from their sectional races. The boys not only get it done on race day, but they also get it done in the classroom. Jack and Nate also earned academic all-state honors as their GPA is well above the 3.5 threshold set by the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association to receive this honor. Congratulations, boys!

UW-W Claims Women’s WIAC Volleyball Title

Editor’s note: The following announcement was posted to the WIAC website.

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater claimed the outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s volleyball championship with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-23 victory over UW-Eau Claire at Kris Russell Volleyball Arena on Oct. 28.

The first-place finish is the league-leading 18th in program archives. The Warhawks (23-5 overall, 7-0 WIAC) also secured the No. 1 seed for the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver’s) – receiving a bye into the semifinals. The six-team event will begin with first round contests on Nov. 1, and will be followed by semifinal matches on Nov. 3. The championship game will be held Nov. 5 with the winner earning the conference’s automatic NCAA bid. All matches will be played at the higher seed.

Against UW-Eau Claire (21-7, 4-3), Jenna Weinfurt and Erin McNeil combined for nine kills in the first set to lead the Warhawks to a 26-24 win.

UW-Whitewater jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead in set two. Kirsten Anderson and McNeil teamed up for a towering block that forced an early Blugold timeout. UW-Eau Claire worked their way back into the set pulling to within four, 15-11, forcing a UW-Whitewater timeout. The Warhawks scored five of the next six out of the break to extend the advantage to 20-13 when the Blugolds tried to halt the UW-Whitewater momentum. A fantastic rally on set point led to a UW-Eau Claire attack error to seal the 25-18 set two victory for the Warhawks.

Set three featured small runs by each team with the squads stealing momentum back-and-forth. One of those runs gave the Blugolds a 19-14 advantage. The Warhawks rattled off the next four to pull within one and force a UW-Eau Claire timeout. A McNeil tool of the block out of the break tied it up. From that point, the teams traded points with the Blugolds calling their final timeout of the set with the Warhawks leading 23-22 following a kill from Anderson.

UW-Eau Claire registered the first point out of the timeout but Weinfurt made it match point with a powerful kill. A great set from KellyAnn Sotiros close to the net went out to Weinfurt who went high off the top of the block for the kill sealing the 25-23 win.

Weinfurt hammered down a match-high 14 kills hitting .355 in the contest. Hannah Proctor led the Warhawks at the net defensively with four blocks including one solo. In the backcourt, Morgan Jensen tallied nine digs. Sotiros posted 24 assists in the match.

Arianna Barrett led the Blugolds with 11 kills, while Sheridan Dettmann had 11 digs and Charlie Nelson 32 assists.
