Whippets Make Strong Showing at Mid-States

The Whippet Wrestling Team had the opportunity to host and participate in the Mid-States Wrestling Classic held at UWW on December 28 and 29. This is a long-standing tournament that has been going on for over 40 years and has some of the top talent from WI and IL participating. This year this talent consisted of 41 teams partaking in the very talented pool. There were many highly ranked teams from Illinois and Wisconsin in the tournament with 6 of the top 8 teams from Illinois.

Connor Friend on the Podium

Although the Whitewater team did not have as high of finish as they have had in years past, the coaching staff feels this may have been one of the team’s best performances on the mat. The level of competition may have been the best in the 17 years Coach Schimming has been coaching at Whitewater, so team placement is deceiving. Coach Schimming stated that Whitewater has at times struggled in the opening round of this tournament; however, this year the team did outstanding. They won the first 6 matches contested with 5 of them coming with a pin! Of those 5 weight classes, the loss Whitewater saw was against an opponent that ended up making the semi-finals and thereby guaranteed top six placement, so we consider those some quality losses.

Whitewater had 3 wrestlers advance to day two of the competition, placing these individuals into the top 12 of their weight class. Jarvis Porcaro had his best outing of the season on day 1 with 3 great wins, putting him into day 2. Jarvis ran into tough competition on day 2. He wrestled tough but ended up taking 12th place for the tournament.

Aaron Porras also won 3 on the first day and made day two of the tournament. Aaron opened the day with a tough loss but then came back with one of his best matches of the season as he had a strong opponent from Nicollet, and it was a tight match going into the 3rd period. Aaron turned it on and put together a couple of nice takedowns and ended up using basic techniques and pinned his opponent. Aaron ended his tournament in 10th place.

The Mid-States Classic honors the top 8 wrestlers in their weight class on the podium at the end of the night. This year Whitewater had Connor Friend make the podium with a 6th place finish. Connor lost a close quarterfinal match 8-7 that came right down to the end with Connor almost getting a turn to claim back points but just did not quite make the turn. Connor came back on day 2 with a convincing 10-0 win and then a 4-0 win to reach the top 6. He then dropped the consolation semi-final match to go into the 5th place match. Connor wrestled tough in the last match but could not quite pull it out. Connor wrestled well throughout the tournament with quality matches that allowed us to find things we will work on as we enter the back half of the season.

The team is next in action on January 5th when they travel to Jefferson for an RVC Dual. On January 7th the team will host a large JV Tournament with approximately 20 teams at Whitewater High School.

U15 Whitewater United Boys Soccer Club Wraps Up First Season with Championship Win

Pictured: (bottom row) Abdi, Ash (top row) Coach Tony, Casey, Cruz, Kevin, Issac Not pictured: Tyler, Caden, Avi, Richi, Dylan

Editor’s note: The following was provided by Coach Tony Aranda.

Whitewater United U15 boys played in the Brookfield indoor soccer league and just wrapped up their first session.  They were ranked number one (6-0) going into the final game on Saturday, December 17th. With two injured players (Tyler and Caden) and three others players unable to make it (Avi, Richi, and Dylan), that left just enough players to play the final game and no substitutions available.

As the game began, it immediately became clear it was going to be an intense and highly fast paced game. By halftime, Whitewater was down 0-3 and running out of steam. As the 2nd half began, Whitewater knew their season and perfect record were on the line. With encouragement from Coach Tony, plays started coming together for Whitewater. At the 18th minute of the 25 minute 2nd half, Whitewater’s first goal came from Kevin. Four minutes later, Kevin scored his 2nd goal and pushed the team closer. Cruz, Issac, and Ash continued to have unbelievable defending skills to not allow the opponent to score. Casey (goalie) continued stopping shots at goal constantly to keep the score close. Two minutes later, Kevin scored the 3rd goal giving him a “hat trick” and making the score even at 3-3. With nine minutes to go to end the game, Abdi scored the 4th goal for Whitewater taking the lead at 4-3. The final eight minutes were spent with incredible defending skills by every player for Whitewater and they were using every bit of energy they had left. The game ended with Whitewater winning 4-3 in an amazing comeback and hard fought game. The entire game they had no substitutions available so no player was able to take any breaks and they did not allow any goals the 2nd half of the game. They finished their session with a perfect record 7-0 and winning the championship final.

  • Xavier Zei continues to drop more time in the 100 Breaststroke going a 1:47.20
  • Miles Nickelsburg (1:05.60) and Cruz Aranda (1:00.49) both had great splits in the 100 Freestyle.

Brodhead Tops Girls’ Basketball

Whitewater’s girls’ basketball team traveled to Brodhead for a conference game Tuesday night, December 20.

The Whippets got a spark on offense early in the game when Kindyl Kilar hit a jump shot within the first two seconds, forced a turnover in transition, and then Danielle DePorter hit a 3-point shot. That gave us confidence and momentum. We battled on defense throughout the game keeping the score within 9 with 9 minutes left in the second half.

Mayte Navejas

Foul trouble changed that momentum, and Brodhead went on a 19-point scoring run to win 66-32.

Mayte Navejas led the team with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Kindyl Kilar followed with 8 points and DePorter added 5.

By Angela Kelm,
Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information,
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball head coach Keri Carollo, a California native, recorded her 400th win Wednesday as the Warhawks defeated Minnesota-Morris 82-45 at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz.

In her 21st season with UW-Whitewater, Carollo already holds the most wins in program history. Leading up to the 400-win milestone, Carollo has led the Warhawks to four Final Four appearances including a pair of national runners-up and two third-place finishes, the most by a coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history. UW-Whitewater has made the NCAA Division III tournament 13 of the last 14 seasons and she has recorded 20 or more wins nine times. Carollo has coached nine All-Americans, a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III All-Star, a WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete and over 60 to all-conference honors. She has garnered Division III National Coach of the Year accolades along with 12 total coach of the year awards including conference, regional and national honors.

The Warhawks were rolling from the opening tip Wednesday. Minnesota-Morris scored the opening bucket but UW-Whitewater rattled off 14 of the next 15. By the end of the first, UWW widened the gap to 25-10.

UW-Whitewater dropped in the first six of the second quarter to take a 21-point lead. That advantage eventually swelled to 27 by halftime. The Warhawks cruised the rest of the way outscoring their opponent 20-12 in the third and 18-16 in the fourth leading to the final.

The Warhawks turned defense into offense once again outscoring their opponent 37-21 in points off turnovers.

All 19 Warhawks saw action in the milestone-reaching contest with 11 entering the scoring column. Aleah Grundahl led all players with 16 points on 6-10 from the floor. Kacie Carollo added 12.

Yssa Sto. Domingo dished out eight assists while Abi Baumgartner hauled in 10 boards and registered four steals in the contest.

UW-Whitewater wrapped up their winter trip in California with a 2-0 record and will return to Whitewater for their next game on December 30.

Four JV Wrestlers Place First at Elkhorn Invite

Saturday, December 17, the Whitewater JV Wrestling Team traveled to The Elkhorn Invitational taking on 25 tough teams, most from division one schools. Many of the teams the Whippets competed against were from well-known wrestling programs throughout the state. The 13 competing Whippet Wrestlers found themselves in really tough brackets.

As a team, the Whippets had eleven wrestlers place in the top three. Taking third were Max Babcock, Quinton O’Toole, and Rylan Oldenberg.

Richie Kalra, Michael Obregon, and Keven Gonzalez pushed on to take second place.

Four wrestlers brought home first place medals for the Whippets. Jake Luebker allowed only one point during the tournament, finishing first. Marcus Seaver finished first by pinning all four of his opponents. Curtis Rossmiller followed suit by pinning two of his three opponents and winning by a decision to take first. The fourth Whippet taking first was Christian Minett, pinning two of his opponents and winning in overtime.

Overall it was a great day for the Whitewater JV Team. As a team, they keep showing improvements on the wrestling mat, which is exactly what the coaches are looking for as the season progresses.

WHS Grad Emme Bullis Breaks into Cal Poly’s Volleyball Starting Lineup

The following quotes are from an article, “Next Level: After redshirt year, Whitewater High grad Emme Bullis breaks into Cal Poly’s Volleyball Starting lineup,” in The Gazette on December 15 by Tom Miller. Next Level: After redshirt year, Whitewater High grad Emme Bullis breaks into Cal Poly’s volleyball starting lineup

“Emme Bullis’ parents were both teachers and coaches.

That partially explains the Whitewater High graduate’s success as a redshirt freshman [on] the Cal Poly volleyball team this season.

Bullis finished the season as the Mustangs leader in assists (1,105) and digs (26) and third in service aces with 18…..

Her first season in the Big West impressed her head coach Caroline Walters. “She’s a leader,” Walters told The Mustang News, the school’s publication. “She is consistently saying the right things and doing the right things.”

That is nothing new for people who watched Bullis star four years for the Whippets. A three-time Rock Valley Conference first-team selection and a first-team all-state pick her senior year, Bullis had a solid upbringing both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.

Her father, Kevin, was the UW-Whitewater head football coach from 2015 until the end of this past season when he announced his retirement.

Emme’s mother, Kathy, coached her throughout her high school career. Kathy retired after the 2021 season as the Whippets’ head coach.

Kevin and Kathy are in the process of moving to California. Kevin is pursuing a job in education, while Kathy already has been working in California….

They will have more opportunities to watch Emme play in her three remaining seasons.

She beat out a senior who was second in assists in the Big West last season for the starting setter job….

The drive and her competitiveness are illustrated by her success in the classroom, as well. A high honor roll student all four years at Whitewater High, Bullis is majoring in child development and wants to teach at the elementary school level when she graduates.

That is three volleyball seasons—and many more successes—away.”
