By Angela Kelm
Asst. Athletic Director for Sports Information

The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team will be back in front of the Warhawk faithful at Perkins Stadium this Saturday. UWW will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. The game is the team’s annual Alumni Day presented by Mercyhealth.

Latest Rankings
The Warhawks are ranked third in the latest D3football.com and American Football Coaches Association Division III polls. UMHB is receiving votes in the pair of national polls.

UWW’s Last Time Out
The Warhawks are coming off of a 24-14 road win over Division II’s Roosevelt University. UW-Whitewater capitalized on defense and special teams to put up 17 points in the third quarter to bolster the win.

Quarterback Jason Ceniti found Drake Martin on a short pass for the first touchdown of the game. The Warhawk defense provided a boost on the first drive of the second half last week. On the third play of the third quarter, UWW pushed the Laker quarterback back into his own end zone where a fumble was recovered by Lucas Sadler for the defensive touchdown. Later in the quarter, Tyler Vasey hauled in a kickoff at the two-yard line and went the distance for the 98-yard kick return TD.

UMHB’s Last Time Out
The Crusaders defeated Westgate Christian University 85-6 last week. UMHB put up 71 points in the first half alone. Kamerin Ferguson averaged 30.8 yards per carry with 185 yards on 6 rushes including a pair of touchdowns. Four Crusaders saw action at QB with Isaac Phe connecting on 7 of 9 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Six receivers tallied catches on the day as Mary Hardin-Baylor posted 562 yards of total offense.

On the Air
Saturday’s game will air live on the WIAC Network courtesy of UWWTV. The contest can also be heard on 105.9 FM The Hog in the Whitewater area, or online.

Series
This is the 11th matchup between these two powerhouse programs. The Warhawks own the series 8-2 and have won the last two games. Last season, UWW topped the Cru in Belton, Texas 17-14. In 2022, UW-Whitewater won 28-24 in a thriller at The Perk. From 2007-2019, the Warhawks met UMHB six times in the NCAA Division III Playoffs. UWW was 4-2 over that span of postseason matchups.

No. 3 UW-W Volleyball Falls to No. 5 UW-Oshkosh

Jenna Weinfurt, Hannah Proctor and Chloe Werner go up for a block at UW-Oshkosh (Steve Frommell)

By Angela Kelm
Asst. Athletic Director for Sports Information

Box Score | Oshkosh, Wis. — The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season in a five-setter at No. 5 UW-Oshkosh Wednesday. The Titans took the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener 25-18, 13-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10.

The Warhawks had the opening serve and Alayna Jansky registered the first point of the contest with a kill. Her tip off the hands of the Titan blocks fell to the floor for a 1-0 UWW lead. The rest of the set belonged to UW-Oshkosh. The Titans continued to build a lead with scrappy play – extending rallies and eventually taking the set 25-18.

UW-Whitewater came out on fire in the second set. The Warhawks jumped out to an 8-2 lead bolstered by a pair of kills from Jansky and a huge block from Chloe Werner and Hannah Proctor.

After a pair of Jenna Weinfurt kills and another big block – this time from Proctor and Weinfurt – the Titans signaled for timeout, their second of the set, with UWW leading 12-4. UWO scored three straight out of the timeout until Weinfurt and Abbie Dix registered back-to-back kills to pull the momentum back to the Warhawks.

Later in the set, a pair of consecutive blocks had UW-Whitewater energized. Jansky, Dix and Krzus were a towering wall in the middle turning away an attack from a middle hitter. Dix and Krzus followed with another block on the very next play to make it 20-10. The Warhawks went on to even the match with a 25-13 set two victory capped by a Jansky ace.

The UWW offense hit their stride in the second set with a .333 attack percentage including 12 kills – 8 from Jansky. Meanwhile, the defense tallied five blocks including three from Dix.

Set three was much more like the top five matchup fans were expecting – a back-and-forth battle with the squads trading leads and momentum. With 17 ties and 7 lead changes, it was a hard cross from Jansky that just nicked the line and a block from Proctor and Werner that gave UWW set point. Werner found the deep corner on an attack for the kill and a 25-22 Warhawk win.

The Titans held the lead for the majority of set four. UW-Whitewater pulled to within one multiple times, but each time UWO had a response. Trailing 16-12, the Warhawks called timeout. Out of the break, the teams traded points with the long rallies continuing to favor the Titans.

Still, the Warhawks showcased their resilience. Trailing by five 21-16, Jansky sparked a run with back-to-back absolute smashes followed by a Werner and Proctor block to pull within two and force a UWO timeout.

A Titan attack error had the margin at one before consecutive kills pushed the lead back to three, 23-20. This time, it was UWW’s turn to call timeout.

The Warhawks went to Jansky on the other side of the break for a kill off the top of the block. A pair of UWO miscues knotted the game 23-23. A kill and UWW attack error sent the match into a decisive fifth set.

Early attack errors proved costly as the Warhawks trailed 8-5 at the side switch. UWW would pull to within one, 10-9, but the Titans went on to take the set 15-10.

Three Warhawks registered double digit kills led by Jansky’s 21. Weinfurt added 14 while Werner was the most efficient with 11 kills in 29 attempts with just 2 errors. Krzus posted 49 assists in the match.

Jaedynn Evans was stellar in the backcourt with 26 digs. Weinfurt joined her teammate in double figures with 15.

UW-Whitewater won the battle at the net with 15.5 blocks compared to Oshkosh’s 8.0. Proctor tallied nine with a solo and eight assisted. Opposite of Proctor in the middle, Dix added six including a solo and five assisted. Werner and Krzus registered five assist blocks each.

The Warhawks will head to Washington University in St. Louis this weekend for a pair of matches against ranked teams. UWW will face No. 7 La Verne Friday and No. 15 Gustavus Adolphus Saturday.

Football Falls to Delavan-Darien 47-0

Coach Sam Bartlett stated, “Our game against Delavan-Darien was one we would love to have back. Delavan came out of the gates ready to play. They played a disciplined football game all night long. We need to get better in our discipline in games to avoid penalties that cost the team and directly aid in the other team’s success.

A major focus of this week is getting back to the basics of who we are as a team. We need to be a team that is founded on the ACE philosophy. We need to have a great attitude regardless of circumstances, show great character in the face of adversity, and always maintain a high level of effort. We do these actions on a consistent basis, and we will be a successful team.”

Packers defeat Colts at Lambeau to become first franchise with 800 wins

From NFL.com

“One of the NFL’s eldest franchises made history Sunday in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 16-10, on Sunday for the franchise’s landmark 800th victory.

The victory came in quarterback Malik Willis‘ first-career start for the Packers. Willis started in place of an injured Jordan Love, and Green Bay relied on a run-heavy approach to get the W. Josh Jacobs rushed 32 times for 151 yards and Matt LaFleur’s team totaled 261 yards on the ground.

Green Bay (1-1) is the first club to reach the milestone mark, improving the franchise’s record to 800-599-38. Trailing behind the Pack for second on the all-time wins list are the Chicago Bears, who enter their Sunday night game at 794-634-42.

The Packers are in their 104th season, having debuted in 1921 as part of the American Professional Football Association. They are the third-oldest club in the NFL, trailing only the Bears (originally the Decatur Staleys) and the Arizona Cardinals (originally the Chicago Cardinals).”

No. 3 Warhawk Football Uses Third Quarter Surge to Defeat DII Roosevelt

Asst. Athletic Director for Sports Information

Box Score | Arlington Heights, Ill. – The No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team used a 17-point third quarter to defeat Roosevelt University 24-14 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks got on the board with their first drive of the game. Despite an illegal block on the opening kick that pushed UWW back to their own eight-yard-line, the Warhawks needed just nine plays to drive the 92-yards for the score. The big play of the drive was a 46-yard Jason Ceniti to Vasey connection that gave UWW a first down at the RU 16. Two plays later, Ceniti hit Drake Martin for the six-yard passing touchdown. Jackson Fox split the uprights for a 7-0 UWW lead.

That score held through the rest of the half. The Warhawks came out in the third firing on all cylinders. The defense caused a turnover on the Lakers’ first drive of the second half. On the first play of the drive Tavy Crump forced a fumble on a reception but the receiver was able to recover. Two plays later, the RU quarterback fumbled and Lucas Sadler jumped on the loose ball in the end zone for the defensive score. Fox nailed the point after at the Warhawks lead doubled to 14-0.

On the next Roosevelt drive, Matt Burba burst into the backfield for a sack to force fourth down and a punt. The offense capitalized, getting into field goal position for Fox who hit the 40-yarder for a 17-0 advantage.

Roosevelt got on the board courtesy of an 84-yard touchdown reception on their next drive, but the Warhawks and Vasey had the answer.

Vasey hauled in the 63-yard kickoff and cruised passed defenders for a 98-yard kick return. That return tops his previous kick return for a TD of 93-yards from last season. Fox connected again and the UWW margin ballooned to 24-7.

Roosevelt capped the scoring in the game with a touchdown in the fourth on a deep pass down the middle from 31-yards out for the final, 24-14.

Ceniti was 12-21 for 128 yards and a passing touchdown. Brian Wilterdink, Blake Haggerty and Vasey all caught multiple passes from Ceniti with Martin’s sole reception going for the touchdown.

Brian Stanton led the charge in the ground game with 87 yards on 14 carries – an average of 6.2 per rush.

The Warhawk defense registered nine tackles for a loss and three sacks in the contest. Nehemiah Lomax, Mike Gutoski and Burba all got to the Lakers quarterback in the backfield. Dyson Klubertanz and Carter Sessa paced UWW with five tackles each.

UW-Whitewater will return to Perkins Stadium next week (September 21) for the final game of the non-conference slate. UWW will host Mary Hardin-Baylor for the team’s annual Alumni Day with kickoff set for 1 p.m.

UW-Whitewater’s offense was too much for the Falcons to handle as the Warhawks enjoyed a 36-21 sway in kills. Alayna Jansky led the way with 11. The outside hitter was incredibly efficient in the match hitting .733 with the 11 kills in 15 attempts and 0 attack errors. Hannah Proctor added five kills in nine attempts without an error from the middle while Chloe Werner tallied three kills in six attempts and zero errors from the right side.

Defensively at the net, Proctor had the big block on the day. She posted a solo and six assist blocks.

The Warhawks will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next week with a road match at UW-Oshkosh. The match is set to be a battle of top 10s as the Warhawks are ranked fourth and the Titans sixth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

No. 4 UW-W Volleyball Takes Down Another Ranked Opponent

Box Score || Whitewater, Wis. – The No. 4 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s volleyball team took down No. 16 Millikin University 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) in Russell Arena Friday evening. The Warhawks, 9-0, have won four matches against top 25 opponents so far this season.

Two words that describe tonight’s thriller in Russell — resilience and relentless. UWW trailed much of the first set as the Big Blue strung together a few runs to build a 17-11 advantage. The Warhawks never quit battling back to within four, 22-18, when an Abbie Dix kill sparked a phenomenal run. With Jenna Weinfurt at the service line, UW-Whitewater rattled off six straight. The powerful outside put the finishing touches on opener serving set point and then tallying the kill from the back row to give UWW a 1-0 lead.

A five-point run in set two – once again with Weinfurt serving – gave the Warhawks a 13-9 lead. UW-Whitewater held the margin until late in the set when Millikin turned the tables and went on a run of their own. With UWW leading 23-17, the Big Blue rattled off five consecutive to pull within one, 23-22. Alayna Jansky hammered down a kill to force set point. Following a Warhawk miscue from the service line, Jansky put set two away with another kill, her eighth of the second set.

The squads traded the lead 30 times in set three. Similar to the first two, the end of the set was a battle. Millikin held a 23-21 lead before the Warhawks came back to tie it off of a Weinfurt kill and Big Blue attack error. However, MU responded with a pair of kills to extend the match to a fourth set.

UW-Whitewater ran away with the fourth set. Ally Longden served a long run mid set that had the Warhawks enjoying a 16-8 advantage. UWW extended the gap to 22-13 and traded points the rest of the way for the win. Weinfurt sealed the deal with the final kill of the contest.

Jansky led all players with 24 kills on 54 attempts. She added 13 digs in the match. Weinfurt registered 15 kills while adding a pair of aces and 11 digs. Dix joined the outsides in double digits with 10 kills adding a match-high six assist blocks.

Aubrie Krzus posted 49 assists while Jaedynn Evans led UWW with 19 digs in the four-setter.

The Warhawks will wrap up play in the second UW-Whitewater Invitational of the season Saturday against Concordia University (Wisconsin) at 2 p.m.
