Whippet Volleyball Making Great Strides

The Whippet Volleyball Program took on East Troy this past week and Varsity headed to a tournament in Deerfield.

The JV1 and JV2 teams continue to make great strides in their overall skill development. They are beginning to understand the game at a higher level and continue to focus on playing as a team. Every athlete continues to work hard and get better each match!

The Varsity squad fell to the visiting Trojan team, but had moments of great play! What is impressive with this group is that they never give up, they have a will to win and it is shown in their work ethic, determination, and belief in being a great teammate.

East Troy stat leaders included Senior Sydney Schilt with 6 kills and 1 block. Sydney continues to lead this squad with her positive attitude and will to set the standard for her teammates. Our team looks to her to carry some offensive load and she has shown her ability to do this game in and game out. Dig leader on the night was Freshman Jasmine Kilar with 32 digs. Jasmine has truly developed as a defensive leader for us. Her ability to read hitters and her quickness bring us a strong defense against good hitters. Senior Mya Graves-Koran continued to dish the sets to our hitters and led us with 8 assists and 2 aces. Mya continues to lead and develop as a faster offensive leader! Junior Rowan Seaver rounded out the stat leaders with a block.

The Varsity squad then headed to Deerfield for a tournament. They faced a tough schedule playing 5 matches in a row against Cambria-Friesland, Lincoln Academy, Randolph, Deerfield, and Dodgeland.

The team pushed Cambria-Friesland to 3 sets (25-21, 17-25, 9-15), losing in the 3rd. They followed that by beating Lincoln Academy in 2 sets (25-17, 25-18), and then fell to Randolph (13-25, 11-25), Deerfield (13-25, 21-25), and Dodgeland (17-25, 14-25). Again, this team continues to push through and work hard!

Stat leaders on the tournament included:
Kills: Senior, Sydney Schilt- 24
Digs: Freshman, Jasmine Kilar- 70
Aces: Schilt-9
Blocks: Senior, Peyton Clark-4
Assists: Senior, Mya Graves-Koran- 40

Next up, the Whippets will take on Delavan-Darien at home on Thursday, September 25 (5:00 PM-JV1 and 2, and 6:30 PM Varsity). This will be Play for Trey and Parents’ Night!

Whippets Fall to Monroe 42-6

The Whippets fell to Monroe 42-6 on Friday, September 19.

Comments from Coach Bartlett:

Monroe came into this game as a disciplined team committed to running the football, and they executed their plan well. For us, the game plan was straightforward: commit to reading our keys and doing our job. Unfortunately, it was not our best night of eye discipline. Too often we had our eyes in the wrong place, and that hurt us tremendously on the defensive side of the ball.

Offensively, we were able to move the ball at times, but small missed details kept stalling out our drives. Even so, I was proud of how some of our younger players stepped up. On the offensive line, we started three sophomores — Colton Hilgen, Edgar Arreguin, and Henry Brockwell — and they battled despite their limited varsity experience. Their effort and growth were bright spots in this game.

Overall, our team continued to play with great physical effort, but we must improve our focus on the little details that ultimately add up to winning football. While the scoreboard hasn’t reflected our progress, these athletes are developing not only as football players but also as young men.

As we move forward, we will continue to embrace our season motto: Pound the Stone. Each day we’ll keep working, staying committed, and growing together as a team, knowing that persistence will bring results.

Whippets Test Themselves Against Elite Competition

The Whitewater Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Teams tested themselves against one of the deepest fields they will see all season, lining up with more than 40 schools from across the region in both varsity and junior varsity competition at the Angel Invitational at UW Parkside on Saturday, September 20.

In Varsity action, the Whippets placed 33rd on the boys’ side and 30th in the girls’ race. With multiple state-ranked programs in the field, Whitewater gained valuable experience as they continue to build toward championship season.

Freshman Tyler Carollo once again paced the boys’ squad, racing to a top-100 finish in a field of more than 250 athletes. On the girls’ side, Virginia Nelson led the way in 23:40 for the varsity team. In junior varsity action, sophomore Peyton Comfort turned in a breakout performance, placing 93rd with a significant PR after not racing for a few weeks due to injury. Her time was 27:40.

“We are wrapping up a challenging week with two meets in five days, and like many other teams, we’re fighting through some mid-season illness, aches, and pains,” said Head Coach Chad Carstens. “I am confident in our process and the growth that will come from these opportunities. The experience they take away from this will pay off in the coming weeks.”

The Whippets return to action Saturday, September 27 at an even larger event, the Midwest Invitational in Janesville.

No. 16 Warhawk Football Takes Down No. 6 UMHB on the Road

Belton, Texas — The No. 16 UW-Whitewater football team cruised to a 26-6 win over No. 6 Mary Hardin-Baylor on the road Saturday.

The Warhawks drew on early success in the run game. After the defense forced a three-and-out, UWW tapped Brian Stanton for the carry on their first offensive play of the game. His punishing run up the middle went for 17-yards, but the Crusader defense stiffened and ended up forcing a punt. The kick was a good one, rolling out of bounds inside the five-yard line.

Following another three-and-out, the UMHB punter set up at the back of the endzone as the Warhawks signaled for the fair catch at the 40. The great field position led to the first score of the game. Stanton once again took the handoff on the first play, this time bursting through the middle before bouncing it to the outside for a 28-yard gain into the redzone. Later in the drive, a jet sweep to Tyler Vasey had the Warhawks at 3rd-and4 at the 7. Justin Klinkner faked the handoff and rolled to his right finding Patrick Lippe in the front corner of the endzone for the first score of the game. Seth Adams’ kick gave UWW a 7-0 advantage.

The Cru generated some momentum with a big pass play on their next drive, but the Warhawk defense held forcing another punt. Early in the second quarter, a flag for kick catch interference had the Warhawk offense starting the drive from their own 35. Some offensive trickery led to a big play — Vasey took the handoff to his right, but instead of bolting up the field, he set and threw a dime to hit Lippe in stride for a 46-yard gain to the UMHB 19. Vasey nearly gave UW-Whitewater a second TD, battling near the goal line after a short pass later in the drive but the officials signaled him out of bounds at the two. Klinkner slipped on a designed quarterback run on the next play to bring out the field goal unit. Adams nailed the 21-yard field goal to push the margin to 10-0.

Mary Hardin-Baylor responded on their next drive. A deep pass up the left sideline tipped off of a Warhawk defender’s hands and fell into the arms of the Cru receiver in the endzone. The extra point kick sailed wide to make the score 10-6.

A great return by Noah Battle on the ensuing kickoff brought the UWW offense back onto the field at their own 40. A methodical drive up the field stalled in the redzone, so the Warhawks called out the field goal unit for the second time. Lining up for a 34-yard try, Adams’ kick was wide left, but a flag flew in on the snap and the officials called offsides on the defense. The penalty was not enough for a first down, but did give Adams another shot, this time from 29 and the sophomore converted. The 13-6 Warhawk advantage held through the rest of the half.

UW-Whitewater added seven more in the third quarter. A Klinkner-Stanton connection from 21-yards out capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock. Adams’ kick made it 20-6 Warhawks.

The Warhawks had a final scoring opportunity in the fourth, but Adams’ field goal sailed wide – his first miss of 2025.

UWW registered nearly 400 yards of total offense while the defense held the Crusaders to just 60 yards on the ground and less than 250 yards of total offense. The Warhawks dominated time of possession (37:50) while converting 9 of 17 third downs and 2 of 3 fourth downs. The Cru held the ball for just 22:10, converted on 4 of 13 third downs and were 0-2 on fourth downs.

Klinkner completed 10 of 19 for 95 yards. He tossed three touchdowns – all to different receivers – without an interception while adding 63 yards with his feet. Stanton averaged nearly eight yards per carry with 86 yards on 11 attempts. Lippe was Klinkner’s top receiver with 67 yards on three catches.

Efrein Ramirez and Ethan Gallagher paced the Warhawks defensively with seven tackles each. Gallagher and Noah Moris got to the Crusader quarterback for a pair of sacks, each resulting in a loss of six yards.

UW-Whitewater will rest up over the bye week before returning to action on October 4 when they host UW-La Crosse for the WIAC opener and the university’s annual Family Fest. Kickoff is set for 1 PM at Perkins Stadium.

Soccer Takes Tough Loss to Delavan-Darien, Alumni Invited to René Menager Memorial Game on September 25

Whippet Soccer faced another tough loss against Delavan-Darien on Thursday night, September 18. Your Whippets fearlessly lined up against the 4th ranked Division 3 team in the state and held them scoreless until the 72 minute mark.

The Whippets put up an incredibly strong defensive performance all around with standout performances by Casey Schlicher and Aaron Garcia. A missed penalty late in the first half saw Whitewater miss a golden opportunity to take the lead, but WHS kept fighting and pushing for a result.

In the 72nd minute, Whitewater conceded a penalty which Delavan was able to convert, giving them a 1-0 lead. Demoralized, the Comets high press yielded 2 more goals with mere seconds remaining.

Whippet Soccer is confident moving forward and ready to turn our results around next week against Jefferson and Edgerton.

Calling all Whitewater High School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer alumni! Please join Whippet Soccer on Thursday, September 25th as we honor former coach and mentor René Menager and all that he has done for WHS Soccer. The game will begin at 7:00pm at Whippet Stadium against conference opponent Edgerton. For all former players, coaches, friends, and family in attendance, we will be taking a group photo at half time. We hope to see you all there.

Whippet Volleyball Faces Off Against Jefferson

The Whippets faced Jefferson in their first home match of the season on Tuesday, September 16. The Whippets have continued to make great gains each match played.

At the JV2 level, the focus has been on learning the game, understanding the rotations and playing together as a team. The team has made progress in each area, showing some great 3 hit plays and hustle. Coach Miller commented, “Our team performed with perseverance. We experienced working through a rut and came back stronger in the third set. We value every opportunity to grow!”

At the JV1 level, our team played the Eagles strong. Serve receiving and getting some block touches kept us in the match. Our athletes are working together as a team and putting together some strong rallies. Coach AJ commented, “we are improving every chance we get to step out on the court. The scores don’t reflect how much improvement we have seen in our athletes. I thought our defense looked the best it has been all season and our offense is coming along.”

Although falling to the visiting Eagles 0-3, our Varsity athletes showed some moments of intense rallies and sheer grit. Never giving up, the focus on each play was intense. Unfortunately, an injury late in set 2, found the Whippets struggling to recover, losing in 3 sets.

Stat leaders:

Kills: Kaia Jones- 3

Assists: Mya Graves- Koran- 6

Aces: Mya Graves-Koran- 1

Danika Larson- 1

Digs: Jasmine Kilar- 12

Whippet Soccer Falls 2-1 in Tight Battle with Tenor-Veritas

Whippet Soccer faced a heartbreaking defeat Tuesday evening, September 16, as your Whitewater Whippets fell 2-1 to Tenor-Veritas.

Emiliano Olivares opened the scoring early in the first half with a brilliantly placed shot thanks to a well-timed assist from Kevin Gonzalez. Whippet soccer continued to fight hard pushing for more goals but regretfully conceded an equalizer with only minutes remaining in the half. WHS was in the ascendancy and controlled most of the first 40 minutes.

The second half was a closely contested battle that seemed to be swaying in Whitewater’s favor. A defensive lapse in the Whippet penalty box and a questionable refereeing decision saw Tenor-Veritas awarded a penalty kick with less than 4 minutes remaining. The away side converted the spot kick and went home with the victory.

Your Whippets fought hard until the very end and will take their resolve with them when they travel to Delavan-Darien on Thursday.

CC Battles Tough Terrain and Heat to Finish Strong at Dana Waddell Invite

The Whitewater Whippets turned in a strong all-around showing at the Dana Waddell Invitational, hosted by Marshall on a very warm day at McCarthy Park on Tuesday, September 16. This year’s course change introduced more challenging hills, and when paired with the heat in the mid-80’s and no wind, it created a race atmosphere the athletes will remember for years to come.

Medalists Tyler Carollo, Wyatt Esch, Virginia Nelson, and Delaney Hammack

Boys’ Varsity

Freshman Tyler Carollo continues to establish himself as one of the conference’s rising stars, racing to 8th place in a lifetime-best 18:50.5 to earn a medal. Junior Wyatt Esch followed with a career breakthrough, dipping under the 20-minute barrier for the first time to place 19th in 19:54.6 and claim one of the final medals of the day.

Seniors Quinton O’Toole (30th, 20:59.5) and Isaiah Mendez (37th, 21:56.7), along with junior Marcus Roselle (34th, 21:16.2), rounded out the scoring five for Whitewater. Together, they lifted the Whippets to 5th place with 128 points in the nine-team field.

Boys’ JV

In the JV race, freshman Jameson Rothwell led the Whippets with a 28:50.9 finish for 14th overall. Sophomore Ian Agen delivered a milestone effort of his own, setting a personal record of 29:49.1 to finish 16th and break the 30-minute mark for the first time in his career.

Girls’ Varsity

The Whitewater Girls’ Varsity placed 8th as a team with 164 points, led by sophomore Virginia Nelson, who cracked the top 10 with a 22:37.2 performance for 10th place. Senior Delaney Hammack added a season highlight, running a personal-best 23:27.6 for 19th.

Freshman Madelyn Taylor (42nd, 28:01.5), senior Payton Brautigam (53rd, 29:43.5), and senior Kelly Mayorga (57th, 33:57.2, PR) rounded out the Whippet scoring. Mayorga’s race was also her first-ever cross country competition, marking a milestone for the program.

Head Coach Chad Carstens praised his team’s resilience and race strategy:

“Given the conditions, we had a team strategy to run the first half of the race and race the back half. It seemed to pay off as many athletes from other teams clearly had not respected the terrain and temperatures of the day and paid for it. Whitewater was able to move through the field nicely and have some really nice finishes. Tyler breaking 19 again, Wyatt dipping under 20, and Delaney setting a PR were all huge moments. In addition to those athletes, Kelly Mayorga competed in her first ever race, and Ian Agen broke 30. Lots of good things are happening in Whippet CC!”
