The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team made several big plays down the stretch offensively and forced a miss on a last-second shot attempt defensively Saturday for a 73-72 victory at UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Menomonie, Wis.

The Warhawks (6-10 overall, 1-4 WIAC) shot 54.5 percent from the field, their second-highest mark this season, and outscored the Blue Devils 26-8 in points from reserves.

Junior forward Equan Ards collected 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting and added seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard James Burks tallied 17 points, five rebounds and two steals off the bench, and sophomore guard Bailey Kale posted 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Senior center Riley Jensen and freshman forward Trevon Chislom registered six points apiece, and freshman guard Austin Gates grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added two steals.

UW-Stout (5-11, 1-4) led 7-0 three minutes into the contest, but UW-Whitewater drew back to within two at the 13:28 mark on a jumper by Kale.

The Blue Devils built their lead up to 10 points with 11:07 to play in the half before the Warhawks ran off eight straight points, including four from Burks, to make it 21-19 with 8:17 on the clock.

UW-Whitewater tied the game at 28-28 with 5:50 left, but UW-Stout regained the lead 16 seconds later and held a 38-36 advantage heading into halftime.

The Warhawks scored eight straight points to start the second half, with Ards’ layup capping the run and putting the team ahead 44-38 with 17:34 to play.

UW-Whitewater’s lead dwindled to one by the 15:22 mark before the Warhawks posted an 11-2 run, including five points from Ards and four from Burks, for a 57-47 lead with 11:20 to go.

The Blue Devils rallied for the next 11 points to take a one-point advantage at 6:52. The Warhawks responded again, this time with a 13-3 spurt, to take a 70-61 lead with four minutes left after a free throw by Burks.

UW-Stout narrowed its deficit to one possession with 1:40 to go, but Burks responded with a 3-pointer at the 1:13 mark for a 73-67 advantage.

The Warhawks held on despite five straight Blue Devil points and a game-winning shot attempt by UW-Stout just before the buzzer.

UW-Whitewater visits No. 7 UW-Platteville Wednesday. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team fell behind early and was unable to recover from the deficit Wednesday night, January 8 in a 68-54 defeat at UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

The Warhawks (5-8 overall, 0-2 WIAC) held the Pointers to 39.1 percent shooting in the second half but were unable to mount a comeback, drawing as close as nine in the period.

Sophomore guard Bailey Kale tallied 19 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead UW-Whitewater. Junior forward Equan Ards collected 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, senior forward Riley Jensen totaled seven points, five rebounds and four steals, and sophomore guard Jack Brahm compiled seven points and four rebounds.

The Pointers (10-3, 2-0) scored the first 10 points of the contest and led 19-1 through six minutes of action.

UW-Stevens Point grabbed its largest lead of the half at 30-11 with 5:44 on the clock before UW-Whitewater chipped away at its deficit, drawing to within 35-25 with 42 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Jensen. The Warhawks trailed 37-25 at halftime.

The Pointers’ advantage swelled to 15 by the 14:30 mark of the second half before four straight points by Ards brought UW-Whitewater to within 46-35 with 13:42 left.

UW-Stevens Point built its lead up to 16 one minute later, but Kale sparked a 7-0 run with five straight points and the deficit was down to nine with 10:28 on the clock.

UW-W drew to within nine again with 1:50 to play, but was unable to draw any closer.

The Warhawks play at home for the first time since Nov. 22 this Saturday against UW-River Falls. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.

From WTMJ Radio: “It’s not easy making the jump from Division III football to the NFL, but Packers wide receiver and Wisconsin-Whitewater alumnus Jake Kumerow is doing just that.”

“Kumerow’s success on the pro level isn’t lost on the program he helped lead to two national championships.”

“A lot of times people think when they go to Division III well [the NFL] is not going to be a chance anymore,” said Kevin Bullis, current head football coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. “Jake never let that even be a thought in his head.”

The Whitewater High School Gymnastics Team had their first dual meet of the season on Tuesday, January 7^th against Jefferson at Whitewater High School. The gymnasts had many individual improvements placing some individuals in the top three varsity spots. The highlights of the dual meet included Halee Peters placing third in the Vault scoring a 7.95, third on the Balance Beam scoring a 7.3, second in the Uneven Bars scoring a season high of 7.3, and second in the All-Around scoring a 29.75. Jenna Caldwell also had a successful meet placing third in the Uneven Bars scoring a 6.95 and scoring a season high and personal best on the Floor exercise with a 7.5. Anna Ejnik had a stellar Floor routine scoring a personal best of 8.05 placing her into second place. Maddy Donnelly scored a personal best on the floor exercise scoring a 6.35 along with Brenda Aguilar scoring a personal best on the Balance Beam with a 6.25. Caleigh Yang competed All-Around for the first time this season scoring a 24.30. For many of our JV competitors it was their first competition of the season and they all did incredibly well. Ashly Xochipa placed second in the Vault scoring a 6.6 and third on the Balance Beam. The JV team consisted of Brooke Bazeley and Julit Feit. Kaylee Fell who is our team manager kept track of all scores and was a great help at the meet. The next gymnastics invitational is on Saturday January 25^th at Southwestern High School. Come on out and support your Whippet athletes!
