April 7 Election Still Going Forward: Absentees Must Still Be Witnessed; Extension for Mail-In Absentee Ballots Appealed to U.S. Supreme Court (UPDATED 4/6)

  • The 2020 Spring Election and Presidential Preference Vote is still on for Tuesday, April 7.
  • Due to a shortage of poll workers, Whitewater will be voting in only one polling place: The “Old” Armory.
  • Some 100 clerks around the state indicate that they do not have enough poll workers to staff even one polling place.
  • Milwaukee plans to have only 5 polling places, compared with the previous 180.
  • Per a ruling by U.S. District Judge William Conley on April 2, absentee ballots may be received until Monday, April 13 at 4 p.m. However, the Republican Party has appealed this extension to the U.S. Supreme Court, so it is possible that absentee ballots received after April 7 might not be counted.
  • New: Due to a ruling on Friday evening by the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, absentee voters still need to have someone witness their ballot. That court, however, declined to issue a stay on the extension of the deadline for absentee ballots to be received.
  • Clerks may not announce results of the election until April 13.
  • Gov. Evers called on the Legislature to meet in Special Session on Saturday, April 4 at 4 p.m. to consider changes to the election. Mr. Evers’ proposal would allow an all-mail election, sending a ballot to every registered voter who has not already requested one by May 19, and extending the time for those ballots to be received to May 26.
  • New: It was reported that there was a sparse turnout of legislators for the Special Session; there was no debate on Gov. Evers’ proposal, and the session concluded with no action. The Special Session may convene again on Monday, but it appears unlikely that there will be any action. UPDATED 4/6/20 – The Wisconsin State Journal reports that today “the GOP-led Assembly and Senate have again adjourned the special session until after the election. In less than a minute Monday, the chief clerk of the Assembly convened and adjourned the session until Wednesday. No lawmakers were present for the session. The Senate made a similar move earlier in the day.”
  • New: Also on Saturday, an appeal was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court by Republicans, seeking to block the extension for mail-in ballots to be received until April 13. Consequently it is possible that the deadline will still be April 7 when the polls close.

Wallace Merle Robeson died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Fairhaven

Wallace Merle Robeson

November 24, 1930 – March 21, 2020

Wallace Merle Robeson died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday March 21, 2020, at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Wallace, known as Wally to all, was the only child of Paul D. and Mary (Doubleday) Robeson, born on November 24, 1930 at home in Bradford Township, Rock County, Wisconsin.

Wally studied in one-room country schools and graduated from Clinton High School in the class of 1948. He attended Milton College for three semesters and after completing the requirements for a Bachelor of Education degree in Secondary Science Education, Wally graduated from Wisconsin State College in 1952. He served as a student pastor of the Methodist churches in Jasper and Trosky, Minnesota for one school year.

In August, 1953, Wally and twenty other collogues sailed for Turkey. Wally’s assignment was to Tarsus American College (TAC), a secondary boarding school for boys in Tarsus, Turkey, the hometown of St. Paul, the apostle. Wally taught classes in health, general math, chemistry, biology, bookkeeping, and was school treasurer during his three years there.

Wally met Ruth C. Sowter at an annual meeting between board schools in Istanbul, Turkey. After a short courtship by letter, they married on June 13, 1955 in Izmir, Turkey. In 1956, Wally and Ruth returned to the United States where Wally enrolled in the Graduate School of Theology at Oberlin College in Ohio. Ruth worked in her librarian profession while earning her PHT (Putting Hubby Through). Wally was awarded his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1960.

The couple were given career appointments to the Near East Mission by the United Church Board for World Ministries and returned to Turkey in August 1960. From 1960 to 1965 they lived in Izmir where Wally was the business manager of the school. In December, 1961 they welcomed to the world their one and only daughter who was the light of their lives. From 1965 to 1966, Wally was the principal of a boarding middle school in Talas, a small town in central Anatolia. Much to his dismay, he was forced to close the school in 1966 due to a lack of funds. For the next year, the family lived in Madison, Wisconsin where Wally earned his Masters of Administration in Secondary Education.

Wally spent the majority of his career as the principal of TAC from 1967 to 1988. He touched the lives of many through his years of service. He taught his students the importance of being individuals and worked hard to raise independent thinkers. Many of Wally’s students went on to become prominent businessmen, doctors, CEO’s, and politicians in Turkey. Wally and Ruth opened their home to international teachers to make them feel at home and were like parents to the students whose families were far away. Wally and Ruth retired to Fairhaven Retirement Community in 1996.

Wally is survived by his daughter, Mary Heather (Dogan Satir); three granddaughters: Ayse Celik (Ural Celik), Zeynep Goktepe, and Ipek Goktepe; Troy Marinkovic who was like a grandson; and his pride and joy Aria Celik, his beloved great granddaughter; he is also survived by many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ruth. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charitable Giving “Nonitemizer” Deduction included in CARES Act

While many in our community are navigating the CARES act for reasons pertaining to their small business or for income assistance during this time of uncertainty, there is also a charitable contribution provision that is worth noting for members of the Whitewater community looking to support COVID-19 relief efforts as well as continuing the efforts of other non-profits.

The CARES Act creates a $300 “nonitemizer” deduction for 2020. For individuals who do not itemize deductions on their tax returns there is still an incentive for increased charitable giving.

The deduction:

  • Is in full effect as of Friday, March 27 and will apply to donations made for all of 2020
  • Only for people who do not itemize their taxes
  • Donors who itemize their taxes are eligible for the existing charitable deduction
  • Only for cash donations (not in kind)
  • Can be used by the charity for any purpose (not limited to COVID-19 relief efforts)

Two Physicians Unaware of Local Confirmed COVID-19, but both say, “That being said….”

The physicians at SSM Dean Medical Group Whitewater provided this response to whether they are aware of any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Whitewater:

Roberta Wedl, M.D.: “I am unaware of any confirmed cases in Whitewater. That being said, from a practical matter, I cannot imagine that it is NOT here; we just have not found it yet.”

Nathaniel Besch, D.O.: “I am not aware of local community spread of the virus.  That being said we as a community should behave like there is viral spread in the community. Distance yourself from others. Stay home unless absolutely necessary. If we do this we can minimize viral spread and keep our community safe.”

No Foolin’ – Today is Officially Census Day; Please Act Now if You Haven’t Already

April 1st Census Day Reminder from the City of Whitewater

Don’t Forget to Respond! – The 2020 Census is open for self-response online at 2020Census.gov, over the phone by calling the number provided in your invitation (844-330-2020 – English, 844-468-2020 – Spanish), and by paper through the mail.

The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

It’s also in the Constitution: Article 1, Section 2, mandates that the country conduct a count of its population once every 10 years. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.

Whitewater High School – Online Schedule, Grading Updates, and More / Whitewater High School – Horario en línea, actualizaciones de calificaciones y más

March 31, 2020
Hello Whippet Families,

As we have now heard from Governor Evers that we will be at home through at least April 24, 2020, we would like to take this time to welcome you to Whitewater High School’s Home based learning plan. This is going to look and feel different for all of us. We are committed to doing all we can to ensure that our students continue to learn and have contact with their teachers and classmates. We will be working as much as possible on the varying needs of our students and families.

As we make the transition to online learning, it is important that you discuss with your student the expectations of being an online learner.  Please feel free to reach out to your teachers to gain clarification and know that Mr. O’Shaughnessy and I are available to assist you as well.  Our school counselors, Ms. Hamilton and Mrs. Sonmor-Wintz are also here to help you. They will have office hours as well and will continue to be available for your questions about scheduling, post-secondary options, or your personal well being.

Our teaching staff has been working hard to create meaningful lessons designed to ensure that our students continue to progress academically.  As we start the journey let’s remember to be willing to accept some bumps, be excited about the challenge ahead, and get through this together. I hope I can provide some answers to questions you have as we start this process.

Classes

Home based learning will not be like in-person learning. Beginning the week of April 6th, the lessons you receive from each teacher will give you a feel for how instruction will be delivered, the type of work you will be required to complete, and the methods for communicating with your teachers.  You will also have the opportunity to touch base with your teacher.

Starting April 6, Whitewater High School will be using the following schedule:

  • Mondays & Wednesdays (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7)- 30 min increments
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays (Periods 2, 6, 8, 9) – 30 min increments
    • Teachers will be available during the school week during the hours  (7:45am-3:15 pm) to answer questions/etc via email or google classroom.
    • Contacts made by students and families outside of school hours will be answered within a 24 hour period from time communication was sent
  • Fridays:  Check-in, follow up with students, “Office Hours” via Google Hangout

WHS Home-Based Learning Class Schedule 2019-2020

Monday-Thursday: Students will be expected to log in to Teacher Websites/Google Classrooms during the indicated times to complete class assignments and activities. Students may additionally complete assignments and class work outside of these times as necessary.

Fridays: Scheduled office hours, check-ins

What to Expect On-line

Teachers have been working diligently to establish learning targets and to identify those essential skills you need to learn to complete this school year in a new, online environment. Each lesson may be presented by the teacher either through a recorded video or some other means of technology that will allow students to access the lesson at the designated class time as well as to review at a time that fits their schedule.

Teachers will also post work that will support the learning of the target. Students should log-in during the posted class times to receive the lesson and complete the assignments by the designated due dates established by your teachers. Teachers may create scheduled video conferencing sessions (such as a “review class”) as well as be available during daily office hours to answer your questions.

What if my student does not engage with the online schedule?

  • If there is no evidence of engagement or completing the assigned activity and/or check-in after two scheduled days, teachers will contact the student and their parent/guardian.
  • If there is no evidence of engagement after three scheduled class days, teachers will contact the building administration, who will in turn contact the student and parent/guardian.

Grades

In order to ensure the continuous learning of our students and aid teachers in the evaluation of student learning, starting on April 6, 2020, Whitewater High School will transition the high school grading system from quarterly to semester grading for the second semester of the 2019-2020 school year. In addition, we will be transitioning to a Pass/No Pass grading scale.

The changes to semester grading in addition to pass/no pass grading will give students and teachers the maximum flexibility to end the school year without disruption to student GPAs and credit attainment as long as students pass the semester. This also will allow staff to most accurately reflect student learning.

Grading Scale Definitions

Pass: Student has met or exceeded minimum progress levels for identified essential learning targets (standards). A grade of D- or higher is passing.

No Pass: Student has not met minimum proficiency levels for identified essential learning targets   (standards). Every effort has been made to ensure that students have received feedback and opportunity to demonstrate mastery of standards.

Semester grades will be calculated as follows:

  • 100%- Q3 and Q4 assignments (cumulative combined and with an ending assessment/project)
    • 12th graders have historically not taken 2nd semester exams at Whitewater High School

AP Classes/Exams

According to the college board, Advanced Placement exams in May are still on. However there are changes regarding how the exams will look, time limits, etc. Our AP teachers will be able to answer questions or concerns regarding AP classes/content. Our AP Coordinator Dawn Shelbourn can answer questions or concerns regarding AP testing/exams. Ms. Shelbourn can be reached at dshelbourn@wwusd.org

For those students and families that decide to cancel their exam, they should contact Dawn Shelbourn. Any student that does cancel will not be charged for the exam this year. The testing schedule for AP exams is tentatively going to be released on April 3rd.  All AP students and parents are encouraged to use the following link to check for updates as they become available

AP LINK: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update

ASPIRE and FORWARD Testing

Per the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, standardized tests that are normally given at the high school level- the Aspire and Forward tests have been cancelled for this year due to the amount of time we have been out of the building because of COVID-19.

Student Portfolios/Academic Career Planning

Grades 9-11 Student Portfolios will be postponed at this time.

Grade 12 Students should be continuing the Portfolio process by completing their presentation via google slides. The Senior exit interview process may be altered if it is not possible to include community members or face to face interviews.  Any students with questions or concerns regarding individual portfolios students should contact their school counselor (Ms. Hamilton or Ms. Sonmor- Wintz)

Graduation

Please know that all Whitewater High School faculty, staff and administration are committed to the success of  every senior in the class of 2020. All 12th students who fulfill the online requirements during home based learning and have earned the necessary credit requirements as described in board policy will graduate at the conclusion of this semester. Decisions on a graduation ceremony have not been determined at this time. We are hopeful that the health emergency will end and permit a ceremony to take place.

Communication

I realize that this new learning method will take some adjusting to and require flexibility from all of us.  We will probably make mistakes and hopefully, we will learn from them. The key is communicating. That important first step is to communicate with your teacher. Every teacher will have office hours daily and those hours will be posted on the High School Home Based Learning Plan located on the district website under the COVID-19 link.

Remember…

Remember, we are all in this together.  If you are having issues accessing online resources, the Internet, your device or understanding and/or completing any lesson, please let us know. We realize that there is a lot going on right now.  We want to help you in any way we can to be successful and, as much as possible, free from stress. If you have any questions or concerns along the way, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
Michael Lovenberg

31 de Marzo de 2020
Hola Familias Whippet,

Sinceramente,

N. Esterly Held a Pop-up Self-Distancing Music Festival

Last week Christine C. Hayes, Lincoln Elementary music teacher, emailed an invitation to her neighbors on N. Esterly Avenue to join her and her husband, Dr. Glenn C. Hayes, on March 25 for a “Happening” of a music sing-along. They announced the location would be “your front yard!” “Pull up a lawn chair or blanket in your front yard, bring out your personal device to follow the lyrics, and sing along with Christine, her guitar and amplifier,” Christine wrote. “Wave and smile to your neighbors and know that we are all in this together! Lift your spirits tomorrow from your doorstep. You and not alone.”

It was reported that eleven households participated joyously in songs such as, “You are My Sunshine,” and “What a Wonderful World.”

Sara Kuhl, UW-W Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Marketing & Communication, commented on Facebook, “We were walking on campus and could hear the music from Prairie Street by Heide. It was lovely!”

By the way, if you haven’t yet seen a video of hundreds of thousands of people across New York standing at their balconies and windows on Friday, March 28 at 7 p.m. to cheer for those working on the frontline against COVID-19, it’s quite an uplifting view. Please click here for a Youtube video. It seems that the cheering happening has continued each evening since then.
