Whitewater 8   Beloit Turner 11

Article by Nate Parrish

The Whippet baseball team (10-3, RVC 10-2) fell to 6th ranked Beloit Turner (11-2, RVC 11-2) by a final score of 11-8. The loss knocked Whitewater out of a 1stplace tie with Jefferson (RVC 11-1), as Jefferson defeated McFarland. With most teams having 5 – 6 conference games left over the next two weeks the race for the conference title is still up for grabs.

Beloit Turner was able to jump on the Whippets early by scoring 2 runs in the first and 6 more in the second for an early 8-0 lead. Whitewater would answer in the bottom of the 2nd as Cooper Pease doubled with 1 out. Hunter Martin singled scoring Pease and Alex Fero singled scoring Martin. James Dedrick, then, doubled to make the score 8-3 with the inning would end on the base paths. The Whippets answered again in the 4th as Bryce Parrish led off with a double and Jimmy Duval walked. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt the led to a force out at 3rd, Hunter Martin singled scoring Duval making it 8-4 as the Whippets squandered some opportunities for a potential big inning. The Turner Trojans answered the call by adding 3 more in the 5th inning to make it 11-4 but the Whippets were not done yet. Alex Fero led off the 6th with a double, James Dedrick singled and Dylan Pease loaded the bases. Jimmy Duval would walk with 1 out forcing in a run and Jordan Curtis would single scoring 2 more to make it 11-7. Cooper Pease fouled out down the right-field line but Jimmy Duval tagged up on the play with some heads-up base running and made it 11-8. Unfortunately, the rally would stop there as the Whippets stranded 9 baserunners on the evening. James Dedrick led the hitting by going 2 for4 with a double and 1 RBI, Cooper Pease 2 for 4 with a double and 1 RBI, Hunter Martin 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, and Alex Fero 2 for 4, with a double and 1 RBI. Whitewater would get 11 hits on the night and had a number of chances to add to the run total. James Dedrick took the loss and Hunter Martin threw 5.1 innings in relief. Coach Pease felt we had some good chances at the plate and we squared a few balls to give us a chance but we needed to pitch better. The Whippets gave up 7 walks and 4 hit batters, which is uncharacteristic of Whippet Baseball. It is difficult to overcome that many free passes to a good team, and Turner must be given credit for coming out and taking advantage of it.

With a lot of games left, the team will need to bounce back on Thursday. The Whippets will travel to Beloit Turner for the second part of the home and home. First pitch is 4:45 at Beloit Turner High School.

Grosinke, Murphy, and boys’ relay team win in Elkhorn

Comments from Coach Houwers:

The boys and girls track teams headed to Elkhorn for the Walworth County meet on Tuesday.  It was their final tune-up before the conference meet on Saturday.

The two biggest highlights came with wins from Abby Grosinske in the shot put and the boys 4x100m relay.  Abby threw 36′ 2″ to win the shot.  That throw puts her at #5 on the all-time top ten list for Whitewater High School.  The boys 4×100 relays also made the top ten list, placing 8th all-time with their winning time of 44.35.  Hailey Murphy also won the 300 hurdles in another good race.  She will find more time to cut as her season continues.  Ali Ketterhagen had a personal best in the discus, taking second.  Brianna Staebler had a personal best while finishing third in the shot put.  Jack Mayer ran a great 200m race to take second in that event.  Brianna Tillett jumped well again, taking third in the long jump, and Morgan Radaj finished third in the 100m dash.

Thursday the Whippets return to Elkhorn for a JV meet before heading to Jefferson for the conference championships on Saturday.

“All throughout the lineup, our team played very focused. Cole Kinson and Anthony Reed were both able to pull out victories in their Senior Night matches. The doubles pair of Henry Bresser and Broderick Frye got their first win of the season as a team. They played some very aggressive tennis and hit lots of overheads. I am very happy with how we played and hope that we can keep the momentum rolling into our conference tourney on Thursday.”

Whippet Softball defeats Edgerton

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

From Coach Sdano:

The Lady Whippets played excellent defense behind Sara Johnson’s solid pitching to defeat Edgerton 2-0.

Johnson went the distance in earning her 5th win of the season. She allowed only 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7.

Whitewater scored their first run in the 4th inning as Jacee Johnson singled with one out. Sara Johnson grounded out to third base advancing Jacee to second. With two outs, Kiyla Kopecky had one of her three hits on the day to drive in Jacee.

The Whippets got an insurance run in the 6th inning as Alyssa Schumacher tripled with one out. With two outs, Sara Johnson singled to score Schumacher and give the Whippets a 2-0 lead.

That was all the runs the team needed as Sara Johnson shut down the Crimson Tide the rest of the way. Whitewater is now 7-8 overall and 7-4 in conference. The Whippets will be busy this week as they play at Beloit Turner on Tuesday, travel to Big Foot on Wednesday, and then have home games on Thursday and Friday against Beloit Turner and Evansville respectively.

Comments from Coach Dittmer:

Our lone victory came at #3 singles from Nick Kuzoff. Nick played one of his best matches of the season. I can see how his game has really improved from the beginning of the season. He is now hitting a lot of good backhands in his matches. Even though he lost, Cole Kinson also put up a solid fight at #1 singles. He was effective in executing his game plan but just wasn’t able to win the critical points in the set.

WHS JV track and field compete in Lake Geneva

The JV track and field teams went to Lake Geneva for a 7 team invite yesterday.  The kids performed well, with a number of kids getting personal bests.

The girls’ team brought home all the hardware.  The highest finishes were Grace Black in the 100m dash, and the 4×200 relay team of Amanda Tovar, Catherine Skingdingsrude, Kathryn Donner and Cassidy Pinkowski.  Amanda Tovar also took third in the pole vault, with a best of 7′ 6″, and was on the third-place 4×100 relay team joining Skingdingsrude, Pinkowski, and Black.

For the boys, the highlights came from Hayden West in the pole vault and Zach Gross in the 200m dash.  Zach finished 5th with a personal best, as did Hayden.
