The whippet wrestlers closed out their regular season in fashion on Saturday placing second in the Hustisford Wrestling Invitational. The team was fortunate enough to pick up this tournament after having their Monroe Invite canceled due to weather the previous weekend. Hustisford was very gracious to allow two teams who missed out on previous weeks tournaments. Prairie Du Chien who has a very tough team also entered the tournament late and they came away with the team championships.
Individually the whippets had 8 of their 12 competitors in the championship matches to close out the day. Cooper Hammond and Trenten Zahn both led off the championships for Whitewater each getting first period pins to bring home the championship. Unfortunately these would be the only two to win the championship. Coming in second place for the whippets were; Marcus DePorter, Cody Gamble, Jaden Salmieri, Carter Friend, Will Leibbrand and Gehrig Monday. Bringing home a bronze medal with one loss on the day was David Cushman and coming in 5th was Fabian Gonzalez.
The coaching staff was very pleased with the teams performance on the day as even in loses the team showed good technique.
Leading up to the Hustisford Invite the team hosted their last dual meet of the year as they defeated Clinton by a score of 69-12. This included Senior night where the program saw three seniors compete for the last time under the WHS light; Amaru Casas, Fabian Gonzalez and Arturo Franco each are seniors on the team. The win pushed the Whippets to 10-1 on the season, 7-1 in Rock Valley Conference competition.
On Saturday the team will travel to Beloit Turner to compete in the individual conference tournament. Wrestling begins at 10:00. The team would love to see lots of whippet fans in the stands showing their support as they strive to bring home individual RVC crowns as well as a RVC team crown.
