By Angela Kelm, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 95-90 win at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois Tuesday night.
Miles Barnstable wrote his name in the UWW record book in his first collegiate outing. The freshman guard scored 27 on 5-6 from the field, 2-3 from three-point range and 15-16 from the free throw line. His 15 from the charity stripe is the fifth-most by a Warhawk in a game in program history and the most since 2003.
Teammate Trevon Chislom (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) shared team-high honors with Barnstable with 27 points going 11-18 from the floor and 4-4 from long range. Chislom bolstered the Warhawks with 20 points in the 20 minutes.
UW-Whitewater was efficient offensively in the contest shooting 56% from the field, 60% from downtown and 78% from the line. The Warhawks kicked it up a notch in the second half draining 68% of their shots from the floor and 80% from beyond the arc to hold off the Vikings.
The game was close throughout with nine lead changes and ten ties in the 40-minute contest. Augustana jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead right out of the gate. They extended the gap to seven, 12-5, just over four minutes in for their largest lead of the game.
Jameer Barker (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine’s) gave UWW its first lead of the game, 15-14, on a free throw with 10:31 on the clock. He drained a triple in the Warhawks’ next possession. The rest of the first half was a battle of the bigs with Chislom exchanging buckets with the Vikings’ preseason All-American Dan Carr as the teams went into the intermission tied 42-42.
The second half came down to free throws. UW-Whitewater was 19-24 from the line while the defense limited the trips to the stripe for Augustana. The Vikings hit 7-14 in the final 20 minutes of action. Barnstable was 9-9 from the line to bolster his 17-point second half performance.
Barker and Nick Pierson joined Barnstable and Chislom in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Barker added a team-high five assists and three steals. Delvin Barnstable hauled in six rebounds to lead UWW.
