WHS Baseball team wins 3, loses 2 in busy week

Game Recaps by Nate Parrish

April 28, 2018 –   Oconomowoc 5   WHS 2

On Saturday, April 28, the Whippets (6-1) would lose their first game of the season to Division 1 and #7 ranked Oconomowoc by a score of 5-2. Oconomowoc jumped out early by scoring one in the first inning and three more in the 3rdinning. The Whippets would get 1 back in the 4th as Bryce Parrish walked with one out and Jordan Curtis doubled to score Parrish and make the score 4-1, however, Oconomowoc would get one back in the bottom of the 4th to make it 5-1. In the 6th inning, Bryce Parrish would homer to left center to make it 5-2 but that is all they could muster. Jordan Curtis led the hitting 2×3 with a double and an RBI, Bryce Parrish was 1-2 with a home run. Whitewater split the pitching between Hunter Martin, James Dedrick, Bryce Parrish and Jordan Curtis. Hunter Martin took the loss giving up 2 hits, 1 earned run while striking out 3 and walking 1. Coach Pease was disappointed in the loss as the pitchers executed a number of pitches and struck out 10 batters but the defense was not on top of its game while committing 2 errors in the infield, the tricky swirling winds caused the outfielders a few problems. Coach Pease said, “That is something we will need to clean up if we want to reach some of our goals”. The Whitewater batters had an up and down day as they had 6 hits and had several line drives and hard hit balls but had 12 strikeouts. Pease said “this was the first time we had seen a little more velocity this year, we had to make some adjustments as the game went on,  but if we clean up our defense we are right there. Good experience to play Oconomowoc and we need to learn from it”.

May 1, 2018 –   Big Foot 9   WHS 3

A night after the Whitewater Whippets baseball team (7-2) banged out 15 hits against Edgerton the bats fell silent against Big Foot in losing the first conference game of the year 9-3. Although they still managed 7 hits, they could not get the big hit as they left 7 on base and had a number of great scoring opportunities. James Dedrick led off the game with a double and was left stranded at 3rd to end the top of the first inning, which, unfortunately, was a sign of things to come. In the bottom half of the inning Big Foot took advantage of 4 walks, an error, a bunt single, and a line drive single to take a 4-0 lead. Whitewater would answer in the top of the 2nd as Jordan Curtis led off with a walk and stole second, Chris Dedrick would line a single to center scoring Curtis and advanced to 2nd on the throw. Jaden Salmieri would follow with another single scoring Dedrick to make it 4-2. In the 3rd inning, Whitewater missed a golden opportunity after loading the bases with no outs the next two hitters swung at the first pitch and ground out into fielders choices at home, followed by getting picked off at 1st with a 3-0 count on the batter. Big Foot would add another run in the 3rd to make it 5-2. In the 5thinning Whitewater would get one back after leadoff double by James Dedrick, Bryce Parrish would reach on an error by the shortstop and Jimmy Duval would single home Dedrick to make it 5-3 but both runners were left stranded. Big Foot answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to maintain a 3 run advantage at 6-3. In the top of the 6th Whitewater had a chance again after both Dedrick brothers were hit by a pitch but were left stranded. Big Foot would tack on 3 more in the bottom of the frame for a 9-3 final score.  James Dedrick led the hitting 2×3 with 2 doubles and Jimmy Duval was 2×4. Hunter Martin took the loss giving up 4 runs, 3 earned on 2 hits and 3 walks. Dylan Pease came in relief going 5.2 innings giving up 8 hits, 5 runs while striking out 4 and walking 4. Chris Dedrick finished out the game facing 1 batter, walking 1, then picking the runner off first to end the 6th.

The loss drops Whitewater into a tie for first place in the Rock Valley conference with 5 teams within 1 game of each other. All of the teams will be facing off over the next two weeks and will become very challenging to manage pitching with many teams playing 3-4 conference games per week. Coach Pease was very disappointed in the loss. Pease said “We need to come out ready to play and throw strikes, we missed the opportunity to grab the lead early, then walk 4 in that first inning, we still had a chance to get out of it but our defense was unable to make a play. If we can hold them there and limit the damage it changes things. Then in the 3rd inning to not get any runs with bases loaded really hurt. We needed better approaches at the plate and need to be smart on the base paths inthose situations”.

After a tough loss early in the week the team came back with intensity and was ready to play. Coach Pease said anytime you can win a home and home series against a quality opponent and a team that was picked as one of the preseason favorites in the conference is big for the team and our confidence, now we need to show the consistency the rest of the way and play one pitch at a time.

Whippet Baseball Downs East Troy

Article by Nate Parrish

Whitewater Whippet High School baseball team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 5-1 victory over East Troy. The Whippet bats came out swinging in the top of the 1st as James Dedrick led the game off with a single and stole second to get in scoring position. Bryce Parrish sent a line drive single to left giving them the early 1-0 lead. Parrish would steal second and Jordan Curtis would knock him in for a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 1st. East Troy would get one back in the bottom of the frame but the Whippets would strike again in the 4th inning. With one out Danny Harnack doubled to right, Chris Dedrick was hit by a pitch and James Dedrick would double to score both runners for a 4-1 lead. The Whippets would add one more in the 7th inning when James Dedrick led off the inning with a double, Dylan Pease moved him to 3rd and Bryce Parrish lined to center to make the final score of 5-1. James Dedrick paced the hitting attack going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Bryce Parrish added 3 hits and 2 RBI’s as Danny Harnack and Chris Dedrick also had doubles.

Dylan Pease picked up the win on the mound in first outing of the season going 6.1 innings giving up 4 hits, 1 unearned run while striking out 6 and walking none. Bryce Parrish finished off the last two hitters to end the game. Coach Pease felt the Whippets put on a number of good swings on the evening as they collected 11 hits, unfortunately, they stranded 7 runners, but there were also a number of line drives right at East Troy players, if those snuck through it could have led to a big inning. Dylan and Bryce did a great job of throwing strikes and the defense made plays behind them.

Next up is Milton on Friday evening at Whitewater High School with 1st pitch at 4:45. Saturday they travel to D1 State ranked Oconomowoc.

Whippet Soccer Ties Cambridge-Deerfield

Article by Coach Dan McCrea

This week in Whitewater Girls’ Soccer. On Tuesday, April 24, the Whippets traveled to Cambridge for a non-conference game against Cambridge-Deerfield. The Whippets tied United 2-2. The Whippets scored first on a goal by Jaden Henneman, assisted by Kacie Carollo. United then responded to tie the game going into halftime. Cambridge-Deerfield scored early in the second half to take the advantage. The Whippets Carmen Kraayvanger then scored on a penalty to tie the game. Both teams battled for the next thirty with neither able to take the lead.

On Thursday, April 26 the Whippets were again on the road traveling to Williams Bay for a conference game against the co-op team of Big Foot and Williams Bay. The Bay Chiefs and McFarland Spartans are the top two teams in the RVC, earlier in the year the Bay Chiefs lost to the Spartans 2-0. The Whippets passing game was missing against Cambridge-Deerfield, thus the focus of Wednesday’s practice was on passing, structure, and spacing. The Bay Chiefs found the back of the net twice in the first half and two more times in the second half to secure a 4-0 win over the Whippets. While the Whippets passing game improved, the Bay Chiefs proved to be too much.

The 2-1-2 overall and 2-1-0 RVC Whippets are off until Thursday, May 3 when they host conference-leading McFarland.

The Whippets would quickly answer in the bottom of the 4th as Cooper Pease singled and Danny Harnack moved him over to 2nd with a ground ball to 1st. Jimmy Duval was 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI’s, Dylan Pease was 2-3 with 3 RBIs and Jordan Curtis was 2-4 with an RBI. Whitewater banged out 9 hits during the game. Coach Pease said he was happy to get the first one out of the way and walk away with a win but the team will need to cut down on the walks and hitters need stay off bad pitches early in the count to meet some of our goals. The next game will be Thursday, March 29 at Brodhead High School with 1st pitch at 4:45 pm.

Rock Valley Conference is in its first season having 10 teams and is no longer split into a North and South. The conference is deep this year with 3 teams ranked in the Division 2 Preseason top 10 with other teams looking to make a run at the Conference Title. The conference favorites are Beloit Turner, who lost in the State Tournament last year, Jefferson which lost in Sectionals, Evansville which returns a large percentage of its line up and finished 2nd in the conference last spring along with Whitewater which returns five 1st or 2nd team all-conference players. There are also a number of other teams that bring back experienced players that will want to have a say in how things shake out. It should be an exciting season in the Rock Valley Conference.
