Casey Lyon’s 41 points and 14 rebounds led the Whitewater Boys’ Basketball team to an 87-79 home win over Brodhead on Thursday, January 29th. Matthew Carollo chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaron Garcia added 11 points, as the Whippets held off the Cardinals to finish January with a victory.
Whitewater started the game fast, jumping out to a 7-2 lead, and didn’t look back in the first half, building up a 17-point lead with 2 1/2 minutes left. Brodhead closed the gap, but the Whippets still led 40-29 at the half.
The two teams played pretty evenly the first 10 minutes of the second half, with Whitewater maintaining a 9-14 point lead. Then Brodhead went on a run to get within one, 62-61, at the 6 1/2-minute mark. The Whippets quickly rebuilt the lead with a three pointer by Matt Carollo, a two-point basket by Evan Amundsen, and two free throws by Casey Lyon. Casey also made six free throws in the last 40 seconds to ice the game for Whitewater.
The victory breaks a six-game losing streak, as Whitewater is now 3-6 in the conference and 6-10 overall. The next game is a crossover conference game at Walworth/Big Foot on Tuesday, February 3rd. The next home game is Friday, February 6th, against Beloit Turner.

Nass at the WUSD Legislative Breakfast, February 2024
Senator Steve Nass issued the following statement announcing that he does not plan to run for reelection.
“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve in the Wisconsin State Legislature representing the people of Southern Wisconsin. I have proudly fought for the taxpayers in my district with every vote that I cast for and against legislation.
I have always been bipartisan in my scorn of fiscal mismanagement and bureaucratic overreach regardless of whether the Republicans or Democrats were in charge, since the affliction of Big Government is a disease that infects both parties in Madison.
The time has come for a new fighter to take on the mission of preserving life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for the citizens of the 11th State Senate District. While the challenges are many facing the people of Wisconsin, the preservation of the American Dream in this state will prevail if each of us rises up and in unison defends our inalienable rights bestowed upon us from God.
God Bless Wisconsin and the United States of America.”
Nass graduated from Whitewater High School and earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He retired from the Wisconsin Air National Guard as a CMSgt with 33 years of service including Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Nass served on the Whitewater Common Council from 1977-81 and was first elected to the State Assembly in 1990. A Republican, Nass has been in the State Senate since 2014. He indicated that he would retire from that body when his term expires on January 4, 2027.
Nass, age 73, represented the city of Whitewater for many years but that ended with the redistricting after the 2020 census. Now representing District 11, he still serves the LaGrange area, where he lives.

The Jefferson County Parks Department has officially launched the public information and engagement phase of its Parks and Outdoor Recreation Plan (PORP) update, marking the fifth comprehensive plan update in the County’s long-standing history of publicly driven parks and recreation planning.
Since the establishment of the Jefferson County Park System, these plans have served as the foundation for nearly all major park improvements, trail development, land acquisitions, and program expansions throughout the County. Each update has built upon previous community input, ensuring that the Park System continues to reflect the needs, values, and priorities of Jefferson County residents.
The Parks Department has launched a dedicated project webpage to serve as the central hub for plan information, public input opportunities, and project updates:
https://snyder-associates.mysocialpinpoint.com/jefferson-county-porp
The webpage includes:
- An online public survey, where residents and park users can share feedback on park use, priorities, and desired improvements
- A project calendar highlighting key milestones, engagement opportunities, and public meetings
- A GIS-based project map that visitors can utilize to suggest project ideas in real time and location
- Background information on the planning process and how public input will be used
Public participation is a critical component of the plan’s success. Feedback gathered through the survey, public meetings, and the project webpage will directly inform future park development, system-wide departmental strategies, and investment decisions across Jefferson County.
“This plan continues a tradition of thoughtful, community-driven planning in Jefferson County,” said Jefferson County Parks Director Kevin Wiesmann. “Every Parks and Outdoor Recreation Plan update has played a key role in shaping the system of parks that residents and visitors enjoy today, and this update will help guide the next generation of improvements.”
We encourage community members to visit the project webpage, complete the online survey, and follow the project calendar for upcoming engagement opportunities. For more information or to get involved, please visit the project webpage or contact the Jefferson County Parks Department.

On Friday night, January 30, the Whitewater Girls’ Wrestling team traveled to Lodi High School to participate in a 5-team tournament and found much success. After a delay in the start of action and much anticipation, the girls hit the mat and wrestled extremely tough on the night coming home with six champions and leading the way in the team score, outdistancing Mukwonago.

Starting the championship trend was Isabelle Cantu (100) going 3-0 on the evening with a pin and a couple very well wrestled matches on her way to the championship. Next up was Ema Aranda (107) who was 4-0 on the night with all pins. Storm De Porter (126) finished 3-0 on the night with 2 pins and a great championship match outconditioning her opponent to bring home her first high school championship. Next up for the champions was Berma Vubumu (145) who also brought home her first high school wrestling championship going 3-0 with 2 pins along the way. Payton Taylor (165) finished the evening 3-0 with two pins along the way, defeating a strong girl by pin in the championship match. Finally, closing out the evening of championships for the Whippets was Marianna Kubicz (185) who had two pins. She weathered the storm in a very physical match in the opening round. She remained calm, got to her position on her feet, and ended up taking the girl down to pin.

Just missing out on the gold medal was Atreya Wilson (138) who was 3-1 on the night. Atreya had a tough loss but came back from it by going back to her basics, securing two pins along the way. Aubrey Fuoco (145) continues to improve each time she is on the mat proving that showing up to practice, listening, and doing really pays off as she had two pins on her way to the championship before falling to her teammate. This is the highest place that Aubrey has had in any tournament in high school.
Coming in 5th place, yet going 3-1, was Emma Maas (114) with two pins. Kora Davis (120) also took 5th place in what I would say was the most competitive weight class in the tournament with a couple of state ranked girls in the bracket. Kora wrestled her heart out and did not back down to any of the girls.
Also wrestling very tough on the night were Silvia Harris (120) and Amanda Pena-Ramirez (145) who battled every match but were unable to reach top 5.
The girls are next in action on Friday night, February 6, when they travel to Edgerton High School to participate in the Rock Valley Conference Tournament. Wrestling begins at 5:00.
