According to si.com, former UW-W football coach Lance Leipold was reportedly offered the open head coach position at the University of Washington, but he has decided to stay at the University of Kansas. Quoting Sports Illustrated, “The news is absolutely huge for the Jayhawks, as they have seen one of the biggest improvements in the sport under Leipold. After taking over a team that went 0-9 during the 2020 season, the Jayhawks have steadily improved. With two consecutive bowl appearances in the last two seasons, capped by a win over UNLV at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, optimism is high for the future of the program.”

Joel Houkom writes, “The sunrise on Trippe Lake on Sunday, January 14, 2024 was gorgeous. Note the steam rising from the water flowing from Whitewater Creek into the lake.”
Our thanks to Joel Houkom for sharing this beautiful photo.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.,[1] and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King’s actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.
King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

Editor’s note: The following announcement was shared at UW-Whitewater on January 10.
Chancellor Corey A. King has announced the appointment of Kristin Fillhouer as the interim vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
“Over her more than 20 years of higher education experience, Kristin Fillhouer has embodied a commitment to student success,” King said. “A deeply respected administrator and colleague on the Rock County campus, Kristin puts students first, every time. She understands the importance of the full student experience, whether it’s helping students achieve academically, connecting them with financial or mental health resources, or creating a sense of belonging. I appreciate her enthusiasm in taking on this role. She will be an exceptional leader for the Student Affairs unit at UW-Whitewater.”
Fillhouer began working at the Rock County campus in 2003 and has served in various roles including assistant dean, lecturer, and roles in student recruitment and retention. Since 2018, Fillhouer has served as associate dean for student affairs and enrollment management. In addition to developing and managing budgets, she oversees and leads staff in areas such as academic support, advising, registration, orientation, student mental health services, accessibility services, curriculum, enrollment management, financial aid, student conduct, registration, student life and support services.
Fillhouer played a key role in the successful organizational restructuring that welcomed UW-Rock County as a branch campus of UW-Whitewater in 2017-18. Her steady leadership, collaborative style and caring spirit were invaluable as the campus navigated the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Warhawk alum, Fillhouer earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from our university. In 2023, she was named Forward Janesville Educator of the Year.
Fillhouer will assume the new role on Jan. 16 and is expected to serve through the spring of 2025, when a national search will be conducted for the permanent position.
