Today is Teach Children to Save Day

Financial literacy is a skill that affects everyone throughout their lives, yet many people are not exposed to essential money concepts until they become adults—sometimes after they have made serious financial mistakes. You can help by introducing the concept of saving and spending wisely to your children or grandchildren and now is a perfect time. Why? April is Financial Literacy Month in Wisconsin and April 20 is national Teach Children to Save Day!

Here are some ideas on how to teach sound financial habits to the children in your life.

Read a Money Book
Does your child like stories? Pick up a money-related book (such as The Berenstain Bears’ Trouble with Money or Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday) and read it with them. Afterward, ask questions about the book that encourage your child to think about how they would save and spend money, and if they would do things differently than the characters in the story.

Take a Field Trip to First Citizens
Are you stopping by First Citizens soon to deposit a check or cash? Take your child with you and explain what you are doing. It is important for children to learn about the places they can save money, starting with their piggy bank and eventually depositing money into an account at a financial institution. If your child is old enough, you can also explain that banks pay their customers interest, so saving is a way to earn money, too!

Monkey-See, Monkey-Do

Finally, use the old adage “monkey-see, monkey-do” to your advantage! If you model good saving and spending behavior for your children, they are more likely to follow in your footsteps and be good stewards of their own money later in life. This is especially true if you involve them in financial discussions in order to engage their interest. For example, before taking a family vacation, ask your child to help set their budget for toy/souvenir purchases. Another good activity is to have them help make the grocery list and compare prices in the store while shopping.

WHS Programming Team Takes First at Marquette Event

Twenty-four Whitewater High School computer programmers traveled to Marquette University for their annual programming competition on Wednesday, April 18. Students worked in groups of 2-4 for three hours to solve a series of problems of varying difficulty. Each time a team submitted a correct solution to the judges, their team was presented with a color-coded balloon to indicate they had solved a particular problem. Over 400 students from southeast and south-central Wisconsin competed in either Scratch (for newer programming students) or Java (for older, more experienced programming students).

Cole Kinson, Zach Brantmeier, Nick Kuzoff, and Cassi Hoxie placed first in the Java division.

The WHS team of Cole Kinson, Zach Brantmeier, Nick Kuzoff, and Cassi Hoxie placed first in the Java division, solving seven problems correctly, each on the first try. Each student on the winning team was awarded a 22” monitor, and the team brought home the traveling trophy to display for the next year.

WHS Robotics Team, Ferradermis, Receives Support from Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club

Kiwanians Irene Potocki and Jerry Grant (left and far right) are pictured here with Zach, Cassie and Wesley, and the check, along with a book that Kiwanis will donate to the Kiwanis Children’s Book section at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library where new books find a home once Kiwanis’ speakers write an encouraging note and sign a book.

Whitewater High School Students Zach Brantmeier, Cassie Hoxie, and Wesley Salverson, spoke to the Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club on Tuesday about their robotics group, Ferradermis, and received a $500 contribution from the club. Representing 46 high school students, the youth shared information about the robot that they created and competed with in Milwaukee and LaCrosse. The group goes to Detroit for the World Championship next Tuesday.

The Ferradermis team is currently fundraising for its trip to Detroit for the FIRST Championships from April 24 through April 29. If you would like to help support the team financially, the school district has established a PayPal donation system for the team which can be accessed at ferradermis.org. If you have electrical, mechanical, CAD, or programming experience and are interested in helping mentor the team next season, please contact Laura Masbruch at lmasbruch@wwusd.org.

The Crossman Gallery will be exhibiting their collection of Leon Pescheret Prints and Graphics beginning April 19 and continuing through April 28.

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 pm on Thursday, April 19. The reception and exhibit are free of charge and open to everyone.

Thanks to a generous gift from UWW alumnus Michael J. Cesario ’71, the university’s collection of Leon Pescheret prints and graphic works have been newly rematted and framed. This inaugural exhibit is set to coincide with the Sesquicentennial Celebration and will feature a selection from the over 170 works that were conserved.

Mr. Pescheret (March 15, 1892 – February 23, 1971) spent much of his working career living in Whitewater. His research into printmaking techniques took him to Europe and our collection includes images of historic architecture in England and France as well as the United States. Scenes of Whitewater are well represented, as are landscapes, seascapes, and images from the Southwest where he moved after closing up his studio in Whitewater.

Whitewater Arts Alliance Volunteer Appreciation Reception, Rescheduled for April 25 at 7 pm

A Message From the Whitewater Arts Alliance:

As much as we were looking forward to the volunteers’ reception on Wed., April 18, Old Man Winter is causing us to postpone a week. There is a winter storm advisory, and we don’t want anyone driving to the CAC in those conditions.

So since we want you all to be able to attend, we are postponing for one week. The reception to say thanks to our volunteers will now be held on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm at the CAC. Hopefully, spring will arrive by then!

If you have questions, please call Linda Long at 473-5538.

From Coach McCrea:

“On Thursday, April 12 the Whippets hosted Rock Valley Conference rival Jefferson and defeated the visiting Eagles 3-1. Jefferson scored their lone goal in the 23rd minute of play. The Whippets responded with a goal by Junior Sierra Brunner in the 41st minute to tie the game going into halftime. Junior Meikayla Korf scored in the 49th minute, assisted by Kacie Carollo, putting the Whippets up 2-1. Brunner found the goal one more time in the 54th minute to put the Whippets up for good 3-1 over the visiting Eagles. Whitewater is 2-0-0 in the Rock Valley Conference and 2-0-1 overall. JV defeated the Eagles.

The Whippets were scheduled for three games over April 13-14 at the Antioch Invitational, but weather conditions prompted the tournament to be canceled. A non-conference game on Tuesday, April 17 at Watertown has been postponed.”
