The SweetSpot Bakehouse Brings Home Statewide Awards

The bakers of  The SweetSpot Bakehouse participated in the Midwest Foodservice Expo’s 2018 Baking & Cake Decorating Competition in Milwaukee. This year’s competition had a record 80 entries representing 37 bakeries. The SweetSpot’s bakers entered six items and came home with three awards.

Sarah Hoots won second place in the Best of the Midwest Pie Contest for her peach crisp pie. She spent several weeks developing the recipe for this crumble-topped pie, which will be available at The SweetSpot in the near future.

Natalie Meyer took home the second place prize for her gold and ivory wedding cake in the Extreme Wedding Cake Challenge / Student Divison. This was the first time Natalie has decorated a wedding cake.

Karen Moline, owner and lead decorator at The SweetSpot, brought home the Best of Show award for her black and white wedding cake in the Extreme Wedding Cake Challenge / Professional Divison.

Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic | Monday, March 12

Award winning journalist Sam Quinones will present “Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic” Monday, March 12  at 7 p.m. in the Young Auditorium on the UW-Whitewater campus.
Quinones is a journalist, storyteller, former Los Angeles Times reporter, and author of three acclaimed books of narrative nonfiction including “Dreamland”, the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award Winner for general nonfiction. The book chronicles the opiate crisis that took hold in Portsmouth, Ohio and how the town came together to address the dependency and work toward economic and social revitalization. “Dreamland” was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize and on over a dozen “Best Books of 2015” lists.
Quinones spent 10 years with the Los Angeles Times and has also published in National Geographic, Pacific Standard magazine, the New York Times, Los Angeles Magazine, and other outlets.

The event is free and open to the public.

Outstanding Citizen: Abby Gnatzig

Abby Gnatzig  was honored for her outstanding citizenship at a Good Citizens Award Luncheon sponsored by the Fort Atkinson Daughters of the American Revolution at the Hoard Historical Museum on March 1.
Abby was chosen for her dependability (truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality), leadership (personality, self-control, ability to assume responsibility), service  (cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others) and patriotism (unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree.

Abby was joined by her parents Brian and Sam Gnatzig (pictured with Abby, below left), her Spanish teacher Kate McNulty, her National Honor Society Advisor Pamela Sonmor-Wintz, and other honorees from Cambridge, Fort Atkinson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills and Palmyra-Eagle (pictured with Abby, below right).

FFA Alumni Toy Show Wrap-Up

On Sunday, February 25th at Whitewater High School, the Whitewater FFA Alumni hosted their 26th Annual Toy Show. They hosted over 30 different farm toy vendors selling tractors, trucks, cars and more in all shapes and sizes. At the event, there were many different scale farm displays put together by local 4-H and community members. The Whitewater FFA Alumni would like to thank all those who were able to come and enjoy this wonderful event

  

Whitewater Arts Alliance to Exhibit Art by Jason Miklik

Art by Jason Miklik, of Cambridge, will be on display at the Whitewater Arts Alliance’s Cultural Arts Center, 402 West Main Street, from March 1 to March 25, with the exhibit running noon to 5 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays. A reception with Miklik is Sunday, March 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the CAC, and it is free and open to the public.

The Cultural Arts Center is located on 402 West Main Street in the historic White building near the Birge Fountain. Parking is behind the building. An elevator is available for access from the parking lot entrance.

 

     

 

 

15th Annual Wisconsin Flute Festival

The 15th annual festival on Saturday March 10, 2018, at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.  The Wisconsin Flute Festival brings together flutists and music lovers of all ages from Wisconsin, the greater Midwest, and states across the country, for a fun and educational day celebrating everything flute. The year’s events include workshops, performances, junior, youth and collegiate competitions, masterclasses, and an exhibition hall with purveyors of beginning, intermediate, and professional flutes, music, and accessories.

Tickets range from $20 to $35 for Festival participants. Tickets for non-flutist family members of participants (parents, siblings) are available for at a special rate of $5.

Registration information is available online. Tickets may also be purchased at the Festival.
The evening concert beginning at 5:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Open House at BicycleWise

If you have ever wanted to learn more about bicycle frame building or about the bicycles being built in Whitewater, Sotherland Custom Bicycles invites you to an after hours Open House at BicycleWise.  John Sotherland will discuss his frame building process and his frame building class.  He will also take a few people into the frame shop and give them a hands-on introduction to brazing.

30 Hour Famine | St. Patrick Catholic Church

On Friday, Feb 23rd starting at 4:30pm through the evening of Saturday, Feb 24th, ending at about 7:00pm, 8th grade and high school youth will unite together to bring awareness to our global and local famine crisis, by participating in a 30-hour famine. For more information, 

Three Finalists Selected for Whitewater Chief of Police Position

The Police and Fire Commission of the City of Whitewater is pleased to announce that they have selected three finalists for the position of Chief of Police.

Interviews for the three candidates will take place Thursday, March 1, 2018. A community “Meet and Greet” for the finalists will be held at the Cravath Lakefront Building from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This Meet and Greet is open to the public and citizens are encouraged to attend and extend each candidate with a warm welcome. The names of the finalists will be released in the near future.
