Doris was born on December 3, 1923, in the Town of Cold Spring to Charles and Meta (Else) Shuman. She graduated from Whitewater College High School in 1941. Doris moved to Washington DC to support the war effort and it was there that she met her future husband Stephen Peters. They were married on May 16, 1943. Doris and Stephen had 6 children that were born in 6 different states due to Stephen’s service in the Navy. Doris was civic minded and volunteered at the voting poles. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the First United Methodist Church in Whitewater. She enjoyed her flowers, bird watching, and playing cards.
