Wrestlers bring home team title from Mount Horeb Invite

Article by Coach John Schimming

On Saturday the Whippets wrestlers traveled to Mount Horeb to participate in a 16 team tournament and found great success as a team. The team wrestled very well throughout the tournament coming home with 5 runner-ups and 4 bronze medalists. The whippet depth proved to be enough to hold off Edgerton in the final team standings to bring home the team championship. The coaching staff was very happy with the performance of the day as everyone competing finished in the top five of their weight class and many had some big pins along the way.

Leading the way to the championship matches were; Trenten Zahn, Jaden Salmieri, Carter Friend, Amaru Casas and Gehrig Monday. These guys wrestled extremely well throughout the day but just came up short of a championship. This will be something that will help fuel their fire and keep them hungry as the season progresses.

Bringing home the bronze medal for the whippets and securing valuable team placement points in the last round were Braulio Belmudez, Marcus DePorter,David Cushman and Fabian Gonzalez. These guys each only had one loss on the day which was a great showing.

The team is next in action on Thursday when they travel to Beloit Memorial for a non-conference dual meet against the Purple Knights.
