UW-Whitewater Offering Free Online Class “Beer Matters”

Calling all craft beer lovers, home brewers and history buffs! UW-Whitewater Continuing Education is excited to announce the return of its popular massive open online course (MOOC) “Beer Matters” in January.

“Beer Matters” is a free online class, open to anyone 21 and older. The class begins Jan. 14, 2019, and will explore beer and brewing from prehistoric times to the present. Lessons will cover brewing around the globe as well as beer in America, from Prohibition to the current popularity of craft brewing. Karl Brown, assistant professor of history at UW-Whitewater and former professional brewmaster in the U.S. and Europe, will teach the six-week course.

New this year — join the instructor, an archaeologist and a local brewing history buff on a virtual expedition in the beer caves of one of Janesville’s historic breweries.

“Beer Matters” is completely free, but registration is required. Beer pairings are suggested each week and class lessons will be complemented by optional meet-ups, where classmates have an opportunity to meet each other and the instructor at local beer or brewing venues.

The course will wrap up in February, coinciding with a Brew Expo to be held at the UW-Whitewater Rock County campus in Janesville on Feb. 23. More information on Brew Expo can be found at uww.edu/ce/brew-expo.

Past participants are encouraged to sign up again as the course features new materials, additional meet-up venues and deeper online discussions.

Join us in January to learn why beer matters. Bottoms up!
