On August 29 a crowd of nature and music lovers enjoyed educational presentations by Fellow Mortals Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital (pictured) and the Whitewater Urban Forestry Commission. UFC members Joshua Kapfer, Kerry Katovich, Sherry Stanek, and Bill Chandler gave presentations to support insects, birds, trees, and wildlife. Throughout the evening Liesel Deussen (pictured) performed music related to nature.

The Chimney Swifts have always roosted in the Whitewater Middle School chimney on this date every year for the past four years. This year, due to warm weather, about fifty Swifts roosted instead of approximately 900 Swifts. This was anticipated so a video of last year’s “Dive at Dusk” was projected onto a wall. Fortunately, as the weather cools, the public can still see this spectacle of nature this year with a “Swift Sit” during dusk in the parking lot behind the Whitewater Middle School. Next year’s Swift Night Out will be shifted to a later date in early September.
