Foucault Sets School Record, Headed to State Swim

November 7, 2021

Grace Foucault is headed to STATE!

Congratulations to Grace Foucault for qualifying in the 100 Backstroke for the 2021 State Meet. Grace will swim on Friday, November 12, at Waukesha South High School Natatorium with competition beginning at 6:30 p.m.

All of our Whippets had an amazing final meet of the season! In 15 out of 16 individual races, the Whippets competed at their best times!

The Whippets started out the meet with a fast 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:59.85. Unfortunately, it was a little too fast for our officials, which resulted in a disqualification.

In the 200 Freestyle, Karime Velazquez and Josie Treder battled it out. Josie dropped 9 seconds, while Karime dropped 17 seconds!

In the 200 IM, Emerson Dunham had a best time of 2:34.90 while also placing first in her heat and 11th overall.

In the 50 Freestyle, Michelle Abarca continues to improve and dropped another second. Brooke Bazeley had a best time of 27.08 and placed 12th overall while Makayla Bazeley had a best time of 26.04 and placed 6th overall. Makayla is now 7th overall on the Whippets’ Top 10 List!

In the 100 Fly, Karime Velazquez had a best time of 1:27.88, while Makayla Bazeley went a 1:01.99 and a 7th place finish overall.

The 100 Freestyle crew including Skylar Staebler, Ashly Xochipa, and Grace Foucault collectively went season best times. Grace went a 56.88, and placed 5th overall!

In the 500 Freestyle, Brooke Bazeley had a time of 5:52.24 with a 22 second drop and placed 12th overall. She finally broke that 6-minute barrier that she’s been working towards all season! Way to go, Brooke!

In the 200 Freestyle Relay (Ashly Xochipa, Karime Velazquez, Michelle Abarca, Josie Treder), the swimmers dropped 21 seconds overall. Ashly lead with an impressive 29.79 which lands her on the Under :30 Team!

In the 100 Backstroke, Ashly Xochipa had a time of 1:19.79 and placed 16th overall. Grace Foucault broke her own school record with a time of 1:00.94 and placed 4th overall!!

In the 100 Breaststroke, Josie Treder reached her goal of going under 1:30; she went a time of 1:28.16. Emerson Dunham placed 15th overall with a time of 1:22.26.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay (Makayla Bazeley, Brooke Bazeley, Emerson Dunham, and Grace Foucault), dropped 6 seconds with a time of 4:00.99. The relay placed 7th overall!

We are very proud of how hard all of our athletes worked this year and can’t wait to see what another year of experience will do for them. Good luck to Grace Foucault at the WIAA State Swim Meet this Friday!

No. 3 UW-Whitewater Football Clinches WIAC Title in Thriller

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team batted down a pass in the end zone on the final play of the game Saturday to preserve a 13-7 victory against No. 12 UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in front of 11,991 fans at Perkins Stadium.

With the win, the Warhawks (9-0 overall, 6-0 WIAC) clinch a share of the program’s 38th conference championship and earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, which begin Nov. 20.

With three seconds to play, the Eagles (7-2, 5-1) threw a final pass from the UW-W 18-yard line that was deflected by Egon Hein and fell to the turf with no time remaining.

In an evenly-played, turnover-free game, UW-Whitewater held a 353-321 edge in total yards and held UW-La Crosse to 79 yards rushing on 25 attempts (3.2 yards per carry).

Alex Peete rushed 27 times for 151 yards, while Max Meylor completed 13-of-23 passes for 166 yards. Tyler Holte tallied five receptions for 99 yards.

Hein led the defense with 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and Justin Allen posted seven stops, including one for a loss.

Matt Maldonado kicked a pair of field goals in the first half, including a career-long 49-yarder in the final minute of the second quarter, to account for the only points of the first 30 minutes.

Late in the first quarter, the Eagles had a first-and-goal from the UW-W 1-yard line and were stopped on three consecutive plays, including a pair of running plays stopped for no gain. On fourth-and-goal, UW-La Crosse committed a false start, and pulled the offense off the field for a field goal attempt, which hit the upright to keep the score at 0-0.

Maldonado’s first field goal, a 27-yarder with 6:44 left in the second quarter, capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive that included a 25-yard run by Peete and a 22-yard run by Jaylon Edmonson.

Following an Eagle punt, the Warhawks drove 49 yards on nine plays, including a 20-yard completion to Ryan Wisniewski, to set up Maldonado’s 49-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining.

The two teams traded punts in a scoreless third quarter, and UW-Whitewater was unable to cash in on a drive to the UW-L 17-yard line early in the fourth.

On the first play from scrimmage after a UW-La Crosse punt, Meylor hit Holte deep down the middle for a 75-yard pass. Two plays later, Meylor ran over left tackle for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Warhawks a 13-0 advantage with 11:21 on the clock.

The Eagles drove 74 yards on 15 plays on the next drive to make it a six-point game with 6:17 to play.

UW-Whitewater took nearly four minutes off the clock on its next drive, and Maldonado’s punt pinned UW-La Crosse back at its own 5-yard line. The Eagles drove all the way down to the Warhawks’ 18-yard line before the final incompletion.

The Warhawks close the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 13, at UW-Stevens Point. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Hefty Runs at State Cross Country

October 30, 2021

What a journey! Jack Hefty has certainly made a name for himself wearing a Whippet jersey this season. Today, he was the first Whippet freshman to run in the state meet as an individual since Brett Harms who did the same feat in 2010. Surrounded by seventeen of his teammates that rode up on the bus to cheer him on, he gained tremendous experience as he crossed the line in his race. Jack was able to battle his way to a 117th place finish out of 151 finishers, with a time of 18:50.4. Although not the finish he was looking for, he was able to collect some medals, earn second team all-conference honors, and grab an individual state meet birth this season. Even though a race I’m sure he’d like to re-run, competing at state is always better than not competing at state at all. A wealth of experience and knowledge was gained in just his first 11 weeks as a high schooler.

Adding to the rich tradition of academic excellence as a Whippet runner, Jack will finish his first semester well above the 3.5 GPA standard set to earn Academic All-State status. Once the paperwork is filed and processed, he will receive this award in January.

Please congratulate Jack on a fine freshman season!
