No. 5 UW-Whitewater Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 23 UW-Oshkosh

January 31, 2024

By Angela Kelm
Asst. Athletic Director for Sports Information

The No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team fell to No. 23 UW-Oshkosh 57-46 in a fast-paced, physical battle Wednesday night in Kachel Gym.

Box Score

The teams set a furious pace from the opening tip. The Warhawks jumped out to a quick lead in the contest courtesy of the Kacie Carollo-Aleah Grundahl connection. Carollo hit Grundahl for an open layup on the first possession and the pair connected once again on UWW’s second time down the floor. Grundahl knocked down the and-one for a 5-0 lead less than two minutes in. From that point, the Titans outscored UW-Whitewater 15-5 to hold a five-point lead after the quarter.

The pace continued in the second quarter, favoring UWW for the 10-minute span. The Warhawks forced eight turnovers, scoring eight points off of UWO miscues, in the second quarter alone. The stifling full-court pressure led to a last second bucket as Carollo picked off a pass and banked in a triple from mid-court to send the Warhawks into the break with a 28-24 advantage. UW-Whitewater doubled up their opponents in the quarter, 18-9, bolstered by eight points and six boards.

The squads traded buckets early in the third, but the Warhawks maintained the lead for the majority of the period to head into the final quarter with a 39-36 lead.

Carollo picked the pocket of the Titans’ point guard and went coast-to-coast early in the fourth to give UWW its largest lead of the game, 43-36, with 8:24 left. Carollo dropped in a three-pointer just over a minute later to make it 46-41 before the Warhawk offense fell cold. UW-Whitewater went scoreless in the final seven minutes of the contest.

Carollo led the Warhawks with 13 points on 5-10 from the field and 3-7 from long range. She added team highs in rebounds (8), assists (4) and steals (3). Katie Hildebrandt posted 10 points bolstered by a pair of three-pointers adding seven rebounds and three blocks.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh now share the lead in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference race with records of 7-2 and five games remaining in the regular season.

Swimmers Compete in JV Conference Meet

January 31, 2024

The Whippet Swim Team had a few swimmers compete at the Southern Lakes Conference JV Championship Meet on Tuesday, January 30.

JV Swimmers Isaac Straight and Angel Kilar with teammates Langdon Coburn, Cruz Aranda, and Wyatt Esch

It was exciting to watch Angel Kilar and Isaac Straight show off all their hard work this season! Isaac started off the meet racing in the 50 Freestyle, going just on his best time despite his goggles filling with water, making it a little difficult to see. Angel then swam in the 100 Freestyle where he went a 1:19.65. He finished 3rd in his heat and 12th overall! After a short break, Angel was back in the water to compete in the 100 Backstroke. For being only the 3rd time swimming it, he has showed so much improvement in his stroke technique! Isaac finished off the night in the 100 Breaststroke going a best time of 1:42.60. Shout out to Cruz Aranda, Langdon Coburn, and Wyatt Esch who came and supported their teammates!

The boys will compete again on Saturday, February 3rd, with the rest of the team at home in the Southern Lake Conference Championships! The meet starts at 11 a.m., and we hope to see you there! Let’s pack the pool with Whippet Fans!

Wrestlers Close out Regular Season

January 31, 2024

On Tuesday night, January 30, the Whitewater Wrestling Team closed out their regular season as they hosted the Cougars of Janesville Craig in a non-conference wrestling meet. Historically this has been a very well wrestled competitive dual meet for both teams as they gear up for their respective Conference Tournaments this coming Saturday. Tuesday proved to be no different.

JJ Gonzalez wins by pin

Whitewater wrestled very well but came up just short on the night, dropping the dual meet 32-33. The team finished the regular season with an 8-3 record, dropping their last two dual meets each by 1 point! The team finished undefeated in the Rock Valley “Valley Division” at 4-0.

Coming away with wins for the Whippets against Craig included pins by Rylan Oldenburg (106), JJ Gonzalez (157), and Junior Soto (HWT). Winning by 8 points and earning a major decision for the team included Connor Friend (132) and Odair Porras (150). Coming away with forfeit on the night was Sebastian Cuellar at 165.

Odair Porras wins by major decision (file photo)

Although the team dropped the meet, the coaching staff was pleased with the performance of all. Even in losses the wrestlers competed and left it on the mat each and every match, and that is all that the coaches can ask for.

Next up for the Whippets the JV team will travel to Delavan-Darien to participate in the JV Conference Wrestling Tournament. Wrestling starts on Friday night at 4:00. The varsity team will then travel to Delavan-Darien to participate in the Rock Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday. Wrestling will begin at 10:00.
