Throughout the pandemic, SSM Health has experienced numerous challenges and witnessed the strength found within community. We recently had a unique opportunity to share, with our broader community, the story of SSM Health and our incredible team members. A 60-minute version of our Behind the Mask documentary aired Oct. 14 in primetime on area NBC-TV affiliate stations . The film is also featured on our YouTube channel. Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas narrates the film.
Behind the Mask honors SSM Health’s heroic team members who are following in the footsteps of our five founding sisters who arrived in St. Louis nearly 150 years ago, initially serving amid a devastating smallpox epidemic. The SSM Health team has carried their perseverance, dedication and compassion forward to present day by caring for more than 80,000 people with COVID-19, while simultaneously bringing hope and healing to countless others.
The documentary features some extraordinary stories of courage, resilience and sacrifice that have occurred across our healing ministry throughout the past 18 months. It calls us to remember those we’ve lost and those who are still suffering. Most importantly, these stories remind us to join our hearts in gratitude for one another, and all those who walk with us in this journey.
NOTIFICATION OF PROPOSED ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION
CTH “U” FROM CTH “N” TO CTH “D”
The Jefferson County Highway Department will be resurfacing CTH “U” from CTH “N” in the
Town of Coldspring to CTH “D” in the City of Whitewater. The work is scheduled to take place
beginning the week of October 18, 2021. The existing deteriorated asphalt pavement will be
milled prior to paving the roadway.
During construction the roadway will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained
to local residences and businesses, as well as emergency vehicles. The road will remain closed
until approximately the end of October/early November, depending on the weather.
Please use caution within the construction areas and please keep children away from the
operations. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact the Highway Department
at (920) 674-7265.

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team secured its third victory over a nationally-ranked opponent of the 2021 season Saturday with a 32-13 win at No. 18 UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.
The Warhawks (6-0 overall, 3-0 WIAC) tallied 22 unanswered points in the second quarter and made key defensive stops in the fourth quarter to withstand a comeback by the Titans. UW-W forced a pair of turnovers in the game and held the ball for nearly 11 minutes in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Running back Alex Peete rushed for 79 yards and totaled two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving) in the contest. Wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski caught six passes for 121 yards.
Quarterback Max Meylor completed 17-of-25 passes for 211 yards and two scores.
Linebacker Ryan LIszka totaled six tackles and two interceptions, including a pick-six late in the fourth quarter, to lead the defense, which limited UWO to 217 yards of total offense.
Linebacker Aaron Sturdevant posted a team-high nine tackles, and defensive back Egon Hein finished with five tackles.
UW-Oshkosh (3-2, 1-2) got on the board first scoring a touchdown with 3:45 to play in the first quarter for the first points allowed by the UW-W defense in any first quarter this season.
The Warhawks tied the game at 7-7 on their first drive of the second quarter. Meylor ran for 16 yards on the first play of the drive before back-to-back completions to Wisniewski of 41 and 28 yards, respectively. On third-and-goal from the UWO 7-yard line, Meylor hit Tyler Holte for a 7-yard score with 11:21 on the clock.
UW-Whitewater took the lead for good on the ensuing kickoff as the Titans were called for an illegal forward pass in the end zone for a safety.
On the next possession, Meylor hit Wisniewski for 42 yards and later found Holte for seven yards on third down to set up his 5-yard touchdown pass to Peete to make it 15-7 near the midway point of the second quarter.
The two teams exchanged punts before Liszka’s first pick set the Warhawks up at UW-Oshkosh’s 25-yard line. A 20-yard completion from Meylor to Sam DeLany on third down set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Peete with 39 seconds to play in the half for a 22-7 advantage.
The Titans controlled most of the third quarter, cutting their deficit to 22-13 with a touchdown drive on the first possession of the second half. UWO later drove inside UW-W territory, but a 41-yard field goal was pulled wide left to give the Warhawks the ball back with 12:57 to play in the contest.
On the ensuing drive, Peete carried nine times for 48 yards to help set up a 36-yard field goal by Matt Maldonado for a 25-13 lead with 4:54 remaining in the game.
The two teams exchanged punts before Liszka posted his second interception of the game, returning it 31 yards to the end zone with 1:26 left to account for the final margin.
The Warhawks visit UW-River Falls next Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m.

The College of Arts and Communication at UW-Whitewater announces that the Gala Benefit Concert by the Department of Music will return to a live audience in Young Auditorium. The largest fundraiser of the year for the department, all proceeds benefit the Music Scholarship Fund. The Gala will take place on Saturday, December 4 @ 7:30 pm in Young Auditorium with socially distanced seating. In addition to tickets, the Department is raising scholarship funds for students through the Berres Brothers Coffee Fundraiser on behalf of the Delta Omicron student organization. Now more than ever, both students and faculty are profoundly grateful for music and performing live for audiences. An annual tradition, the Gala Benefit Concert features works from nearly every student ensemble in the department, from the Whitewater Symphony Orchestra to the Clarinet Ensemble. This year’s program will include selections from “The Nutcracker” arranged by Duke Ellington, “Polar Night” by Nebojsa Macura, “Festiva Fanfare” by Brian Balmages and more.
Performers are happy to return to the stage with the safety measures put in place by UW-Whitewater and the events team. Seating for the Gala Benefit Concert will be sold in seats of two with one seat left open in between. Attendees in larger groups will be able to move closer to each other during the performance to form their own “pod” section. In a typical year the Gala Benefit Concert produces over $20,000 in scholarship funds for the department. Last year, donors were to be thanked for the funds raised. “The financial impact of the pandemic has not been lost on us,” says department chair Mike Dugan. “For last year’s event we were still able to raise funds through the recorded event and the immense generosity of our supporters. I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank each and every single person who made a donation for scholarships last year – our students are grateful and we couldn’t have done it without you.”
This year, in lieu of a silent auction at the event, the Department is holding a pre-order coffee fundraiser on behalf of the student organization Delta Omicron. Organization President Dayna Hubbarrtt states “It’s important to our organization that we support the efforts of the department in raising funds for our own scholarships. As students, these funds are critical to ensure that we are able to remain focused on our educational experiences. We are proud to be part of this year’s Gala fundraising efforts.”
The Gala coffee fundraiser offers 10 oz bags of Berres Brothers coffee, 2 lb bags of cappuccino flavors, hot chocolate and more. “It’s a great opportunity for family and friends of the department and beyond to get their holiday gift shopping done early,” says Dugan. “In considering the safety measures during the pandemic, this was a great alternative to our usual silent auction. With a caffeine habit of my own, I think it has a big appeal to a pretty wide audience. For those non-caffeinated folks, decaf and hot chocolate are available; orders are due by November 12, 2021.”

Donald Walter Triebold passed on to his eternal home on May 21, 2026. Don was born on April 23, 1935, in Evanston, IL, to the late Frederick W. and Mildred (nee Stecher) Triebold. Through his teen years, Don lived and worked on the family’s dairy farm, where he developed a life-long work ethic. His first eight years of education were in a one-room country schoolhouse, in which all eight grades were taught by one teacher. William Kincaid Davis, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 19 at Agrace Hospice Center in Fitchburg. He was born on November 1, 1941, in Madison, Indiana, the second son of Salvation Army Officers Agnes (Dixon) and William C. Davis. He attended several schools in Indiana and Illinois, including University of Illinois Experimental High School (Champaign), and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1958. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1964 and his master’s degree from UW-Whitewater in 1972. Magdalene “Maggie” Stetter (nee Fritz), 79, of Whitewater, Wisconsin passed from this life onto the next on Monday, May 4, 2026. She was born on January 16, 1947, to the late John and Mary (Presser) Fritz in St. Stefan, Austria. Maggie immigrated from Austria with her parents and brother, became a US citizen, and grew up and attended school in West Allis, WI and then graduated with a teaching degree from University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. Lawrence “Larry” C. Hartung, a proud Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War, and longtime resident of Fort Atkinson, WI, passed away peacefully at his home on May 1, 2026. Larry was born June 7th, 1949, to Levon and Charles Hartung in Chicago, IL. Larry enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1968 and served 3 consecutive tours in the Vietnam War. Leo E. Wurzer, 65, of Eagle, Wisconsin passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at his home. Leo was born on April 15, 1961 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Cyril and Shirley (McNeil) Wurzer. He grew up between Pleasant Prairie and Antigo, spending his childhood summers on his uncle’s farm where he discovered his love for all things tractors. Lois Cummings, 99, of Fond du Lac, WI (formerly of Janesville, WI, Fort Atkinson, WI, Fountain Hills, AZ, and Green Valley, AZ) passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026 at the Meadows Senior Residence in Fond du Lac surrounded by family. Lois was born on February 17, 1927 in Fort Atkinson to Edward and Clarice (Roseth) Stevens. The middle child of 9 children, she attended Fort Atkinson schools and graduated in 1944. Gladys Jean (Riley) Hildebrandt, age 89, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2026. Gladys was born on December 26, 1936, in Whitewater, Wisconsin, to Theresa Egnoski Riley. She was married to Walter Sobolik Sr., and later married James A. Hildebrandt in 1976. Gladys was a hardworking woman who spent her life caring for others. She worked in school kitchens, restaurants, factories, and cleaning services. WHITEWATER – Nan Rowley died on April 15, 2026, at the age of 90. She was born on September 4, 1935, in a little house on the prairie in the Town of Johnstown, Wisconsin, the daughter of Wayne L. Wilbur and Florence (McQuillen) Wilbur. Nan attended primary schools in the towns of Johnstown and Richmond and in the City of Whitewater. Nan graduated with honors from Whitewater City High School. Marion H. Gorniak (nee Pfeiffer), 74, of Whitewater passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2026. She was born on October 24, 1951, to the late Harvey and Loraine (nee Drifke) Pfeiffer in Fort Atkinson, WI. On June 2, 1969, she was united in marriage to Alan Gorniak. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and cooking, especially her rhubarb pies. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
