Samuel Schulz will be ordained into the Christian ministry and installed as the new pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Whitewater in a special service at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 23. Schulz graduated in May of this year with a M. Div. degree from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin. He will serve the congregation and conduct its campus ministry.
Pastor Schulz was born in Baraboo and later grew up in the Madison area. He attended Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills and Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota prior to his seminary training.
Mrs. Schulz is Maddie and they have an infant daughter Dot. They have moved into the congregation’s parsonage and look forward to getting to know the residents of the community.
St. John’s has served the Whitewater area since 1865. It is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The church is located at 116 South Church Street.

The following students, who are shown as being from Whitewater, were recognized by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as Chancellor’s Scholar-Athletes.
Margaret Helbig who is studying Public Policy and Administration, and is on the Women’s Cross Country/Track and Field team.
Kyle Gallagher who is studying Finance, and is on the Football team.
Meg McGinley who is studying Elementary Education, and is on the Gymnastics team.
Jake Burford who is studying Occupational Safety, and is on the Wrestling team.
Ryan Vedner who is studying History Education, and is on the Wrestling team.
In partnership with the athletic department, Chancellor Corey King recognized 51 Warhawks for the honor this year.
To be recognized as Scholar-Athletes, students must have maintained a 3.25 cumulative grade point average or above through the end of the 2022 fall semester. Honorees must have participated in a varsity sport for two years, must be of senior academic status and must have accumulated at least 90 degree credits.
Each Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete was recognized during a banquet at the James R. Connor University Center by Director of Athletics Ryan Callahan and Chancellor King and was given a commemorative gift.
It’s time once again for #flashbackfriday with the Whitewater Historical Society. Here is the second in our series of summer photos of Whitewater streets. This view is another rare postcard showing Fremont Street. By the vintage of the car in the image, it must have been taken around 1900. Or, the car was put into the photo by the postcard company to give the scene more ambience. In any event, its a great view!

COLLECTION SCHEDULE
The City will collect brush every Tuesday unless otherwise announced. Residents are asked to call the Department of Public Works at (262)473-0560 to make an appointment. Appointments must be made by 5 a.m. of the Tuesday collection so route scheduling can be completed.
COLLECTION FEES
Brush located at the curbside will be collected and chipped. The first 10 minutes of chipping will be free of charge if an appointment has been received by the DPW. Any chipping after the first ten minutes will be charged to the property owner at a rate of $30 per ten-minute increments.
ALL BRUSH PLACED AT THE CURB WILL BE COLLECTED ON THE DAY OF APPOINTMENT. NO EXCEPTIONS!
COLLECTION PROCEDURE
Brush must be brought to the curbside and placed with the cut ends facing the street. Brush cannot be brought to the curbside before 4 p.m. on the Sunday prior to the scheduled Tuesday for collection. Brush must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
*In addition, the Compost Site is open for residents on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
BRUSH TO BE ACCEPTED OR NOT ACCEPTED
Brush must be a minimum of 3/4″ and a maximum 6” in diameter. The brush must be a minimum of 3 feet in length.
Vines, rakings, roots, and root balls will not be accepted. Property owners can dispose of vines, rakings, roots, and root balls at the compost site. The City reserves the right to not collect brush for just cause.
MAJOR STORM DAMAGE BRUSH COLLECTION
Major storm damage brush collection will be done at no charge. The City will determine and announce emergency storm related brush collections.

The City of Whitewater will be accepting bids for the following: 12,300 square feet of mechanical dredging of Cravath Lake and 4000 square feet of mechanical dredging of Trippe Lake. Bids will be accepted until July 26,2023 at 3:00 pm. At that time the bids received will be publicly opened and publicly recorded. Bid packets can be obtained from the City Clerk, located at the City Municipal building, 312 W. Whitewater Street, Whitewater, WI, between the hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. For further information contact Eric Boettcher, Parks and Recreation Director at 262-473-0122. The City of Whitewater receives the right to reject any and all bids, waive any informalities in bidding, and to accept the bid deemed most advantageous to the City of Whitewater,
The City of Whitewater has a stockpile of dredged material from Cravath and Trippe Lake at the property located on the corner of Innovation Drive and Howard Road. The City wishes to have the dredged material removed by October 30, 2023. Anyone interested in the dredged material should call Parks and Recreation Director Eric Boettcher at 262-473-0122 by July 20,2023 to indicate their interest and obtain additional information.

Obituaries
Sally A. Schutte, age 73, of Whitewater, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 21, 2026, while at Hearthstone Memory Care in Whitewater. Sally was born on November 6, 1952, to Roy and Elsie (Rohloff) Haas. Sally married William Schutte in the spring of 2003. Sally grew up on the family farm in the Town of Hebron and graduated from Jefferson High School. She dedicated nearly her entire career to Fort HealthCare, where her hard work and versatility shone through various roles. Zachariah “Zach” Schoenke, 41, of Whitewater passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. He was born April 4, 1985, to Keith W. Schoenke and Kathleen Schoenke in Fort Atkinson, WI. He grew up and graduated from Whitewater High School in 2003. Zach worked various jobs over the years but was currently working at Cracker Barrel in Janesville. He was a big Packers Fan and liked to play fantasy football. He enjoyed reading, cooking, and watching horror shows. Russell O. Johnson “Russ,” 88, passed away on September 4, 2026 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Russell was born on July 12, 1938, in Janesville, Wisconsin. Russ grew up in Janesville, and after high school he joined the Air Force on May 1, 1958, serving as an aircraft mechanic until June 12, 1962. He then worked at Parker Pen in Janesville for a time, where he met his future wife, Avis. Marcia Zingg, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, businesswoman, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, at the age of 75. Amanda Jean Hunter was born to Ralph and Malinda (Thomas) Hunter of Whitewater, Wisconsin, on October 6, 1976. She passed away on August 4, in Fort Worth, Texas, where she lived with her family. Amanda passed peacefully in the hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. Amanda was a kind-hearted free spirit with an unmistakable hippie warmth. Ellen Eichmiller, 82, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026. Ellen was born on September 10, 1943, in Monroe, Wisconsin, to Chester “Guy” and Irene (née Holmen) Steig. She married the love of her life, Paul Eichmiller, on December 7, 1963, and together they made their home in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Janet Quinn, age 71, of Jefferson passed away on Thursday, August 20th. Janet was born on December 22nd, 1954 in St. Joseph, MI to Robert Mounsey and Edith Christison Mounsey. She was a granddaughter to Herbert Bragg Mounsey, Charlotte Mounsey, and Ester Christison West. She married Michael Durden in 1979 and later married Eury Quinn Jr. (J.R.) in 1988.
