SUMMARY:Fairhaven Lecture - Handing the Country to Your Opponents: A Look at the Transition of Power in the US Since 1788
DESCRIPTION:The most fragile point for any democratic republic is the transition of power between opposing parties. Historically a rare and often dangerous event\, the peaceful handover of the government from one party to the next was one of the crowning achievements of the United States for nearly two and a quarter centuries. But it wasn’t always easy\, and there were times when it appeared that it wouldn’t happen at all. From the first transition in 1800 through the rocky handovers of the Gilded Age to the January 6 Insurrection in 2021\, the United States has survived numerous threats to that achievement. Join us for a look at how some of these transitions have unfolded and what that means for the United States going forward. \nPresented by David McKay\, Senior Lecturer\, History as part of UW-Whitewater’s Fairhaven Lecture Series “Standing the Test of Time.” More information and full schedule: https://www.uww.edu/ce/fairhaven

SUMMARY:Fairhaven Lecture - Where the Music Comes From: The Vocal Music of Wisconsin Composer Lee Hoiby
DESCRIPTION:Born in Madison\, Wisconsin in 1926\, composer and pianist Lee Hoiby is best known for his vocal works. A composition student of Gian Carlo Menotti\, Hoiby has been described as a “modern Romantic” who rejected 20th-century compositional trends such as atonality and minimalism\, instead favoring lyrical\, expressive\, tonal writing. Some of his most well-known operas include The Scarf\, The Tempest\, and his setting of Tennessee Williams’s play Summer and Smoke. His art songs—many of which were premiered and championed by soprano Leontyne Price—include settings of American poets such as Walt Whitman\, Emily Dickinson\, and Dorothy Parker. This presentation will explore Hoiby’s art songs\, operas\, and “musical monologues\,” examine his compositional influences\, and celebrate his enduring legacy as a beloved composer of vocal music. \nPresented by Rachel Wood\, Associate Professor\, Music as part of the Fall Fairhaven Lecture Series “Standing the Test of Time.” More information and full schedule: https://www.uww.edu/ce/fairhaven

SUMMARY:Capturing Prestige: Human Trafficking in Japan’s Maritime Borderlands\, c. 1350-1600
DESCRIPTION:From the perspective of Japan’s maritime borderlands centered on the island of Tsushima\, late medieval Japanese transformations in commercialization\, local lordship\, and the integration of the archipelago into domestic and East Asian shipping circuits all depended on flows of enslaved peoples. Dr. Peter Shapinsky (UI-Springfield) will discuss how the lords of Tsushima\, the Sō family\, integrated slavery into the administrative machinery of their territorial domain and incentivized military service with awards tied to trafficking. For retainers\, local elites\, and commoner mariners\, such sanctioned trafficking became a source of prestige and family legacies alongside other commercial and violent enterprises. Incentivized by the promise of tax exemptions and other awards from the Sō\, their piratical enterprises raided Korean and Chinese coasts and engaged in military campaigns in Kyushu. This history invites reconsideration of trafficking in medieval Japan as a low-status\, opportunistic\, and declining trade.
