On October 17, 6:30 p.m., the League of Women Voters, Whitewater Area will host a public program in the City Hall Council Chambers to inform citizens on the importance of the 2020 Census and how to participate in the process. Program speakers include Patricia Gillette, Partnership Specialist with the Chicago Regional Census Center and US Census representative for the Whitewater area and Miguel Aranda, UW-Whitewater graduate-student member of Whitewater’s Complete Count Committee and advisor for the UW-Whitewater chapter of Voto Latino. The program will explain the process of the count and will address lingering concerns over the confidentiality of personal information and distrust following recent heated debates of adding a citizenship question, which we now know will not be a component of the 2020 Census.

At its October 7 meeting, the St. Francis Board of Education selected Dr. Mark Elworthy as the Interim Superintendent of Schools of the St. Francis School District effective part time on October 15, and full time on October 28, 2019. Elworthy has served as District Administrator for the approximate 2000-student Whitewater Unified School District since 2016.
The St. Francis school district is located in the city of St. Francis, Wisconsin, a suburb just south of Milwaukee “nestled on the shore of Lake Michigan.” The approximately 1200 students of the district live either in St. Francis or in the city of Milwaukee. The district consists of Willow Glen Primary School serving grades K3-3; Deer Creek Intermediate School serving grades 4-8; and the St. Francis High School serving grades 9-12.
On April 2, 2019, voters in St. Francis rejected a $7.25 million referendum that would have closed Deer Creek Intermediate School and renovated Willow Glen Primary School to accommodate the district’s 4-year-old kindergarten through eighth-grade students in a single building. The proposal was crafted by the district’s facilities study committee and endorsed by the school board as a way to cut operational costs and address shrinking enrollments. However the electorate rejected the referendum, 63% to 37%. The St. Francis School Board announced on September 13, 2019 that Superintendent Blake Peuse had resigned for personal reasons effective as of October 8, 2019. The board indicated that it would immediately get to work on appointing an interim superintendent to lead the district for the rest of the 2019-20 school year.
Whitewater Unified School District School Board Statement on District Administrator Dr. Mark Elworthy’s Resignation
On Tuesday, October 8, Dr. Mark Elworthy notified the Whitewater Unified School District that he plans to resign as District Administrator and that his last day in the district will be October 25, 2019.
The Whitewater United School District School Board thanks Dr. Elworthy for his three and a half years of service to our community. We wish Dr. Elworthy and his family all the best in their future endeavors.
The School Board is developing a plan to hire an interim District Administrator and plans to conduct a full search for a permanent District Administrator to lead our District as we work to fulfill our mission of inspiring and empowering students to achieve excellence in a safe, innovative and educational environment.
On Wednesday, October 16, Culver’s of Whitewater and the Whitewater Kiwanis Breakfast Club will team up to benefit the Culver’s/Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club’s Whitewater High School Scholarship Program. A portion of the sales made between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on October 16 will be donated to the program.
Chair of the program, Ed Schweitzer, said, “Kiwanis appreciates the support offered by Culver’s to the Whitewater community. We are so happy to team up with Culver’s to raise funds for scholarships. Customers can enjoy a delicious meal and refreshing Culver’s frozen custard while supporting the Culver’s/Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club’s WHS Scholarship.”
The Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club is made up of dedicated volunteers who help children in the Whitewater community and the world, all with 100 percent of funds raised going directly to projects and zero to administrative costs. Each year, the club distributes approximately $20,000, with over half going to the Whitewater Unified School District, including Ferradermis, ELL Summer School Transportation, shoes for students, Badger Boys State and Badger Girls State, and scholarships. Kiwanis helped to build and maintain the Flowing Well Shelter, the shelter and accessible playground at Starin Park and Treyton’s Field of Dreams, as well as adopting a highway to clean up. In addition, the group donates to the Whitewater Youth Soccer Club, the Friends of the Whitewater Aquatic Center Family Partnership Fund, the Whitewater Food Pantry, Bethel House and more.
Funds are raised through annual Pancake Breakfasts that have been served continuously since the 1950s, the Discover Whitewater Series Half-Marathon Pancake Breakfast since it began, and yearly poinsettia and lily plant sales. Lincoln Elementary Family Teacher Partnership would like to send out a huge thank you to the citizens of Whitewater and the local businesses shown below for helping Lincoln Elementary Spring Fling raise more than $11,000 to help pay for student field trips, new teacher supplies, new playground equipment, teacher appreciation gifts and meals. As the new school begins, new funds have been delivered to teachers for new classroom resources and supplies and the new playground is a hit. All of this would not be possible without your support.

Jerry Schoen, 83, passed away peacefully on August 25th, 2019, surrounded by family. Born May 9, 1936, in Caroline, WI, he was the 4th of 6 children of Leonhart and Amanda Schoen. He attended Caroline Grade School and graduated from Marion High School in 1954.
Jerry
studied at the Wisconsin State College (now University of Wisconsin)
– Stevens Point, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary
Education in 1959 and a Master of Science in Teaching in 1970. He was
a member of a school-record setting relay for the track team and also
active in the glee club. Following graduation, Jerry taught U.S.
history at Menomonie for three years where he participated in the
restoration of the Mable Tainter Theater and met Bernadette (Bunny)
Stehr. They married in 1961 and moved to East Troy in 1962, where he
taught history for 30 years.
In addition to teaching, Jerry was very involved in the advancement of sports programs in East Troy. He was the inaugural coach for the wrestling and cross country programs, coached track and field for 10 years, and was instrumental in construction of the school district’s first track. He was also the Athletic Director for five years. He served on Senator Herb Kohl’s nominating committee for applicants to the United States Naval Academy and served as a Blue and Gold Officer recruiting high school students to the Academy.
Jerry retired in 1992 and directed his energies to travel, birding, and related activities. He became skilled in carving birds and for many years made an annual pilgrimage to Maryland to enter the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition. His carvings often won ribbons, but he found more joy giving his creations as gifts or donating them to charitable organizations to be put up for auction.
Jerry and Bunny traveled extensively in their retirement, taking in more than 40 Road Scholar programs to Denmark, Germany, Austria, Costa Rica, Italy, Norway, and other destinations. Their travels allowed Jerry to identify more than 500 different species of birds. They moved to Whitewater in 2001 and spent many an evening together in their basement, Jerry carving a bird and Bunny weaving a basket. An avid outdoorsman, Jerry was always happy to be hunting, fishing, or otherwise enjoying nature. He served on the City of Whitewater Urban Forestry Commission, was active at Old World Wisconsin, and maintained multiple bluebird trails in collaboration with the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin.
Jerry will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He was very committed to family and friends, and despite his occasionally gruff countenance, his sense of humor never stayed hidden for long. He is survived by his son Kurt (Jennifer) of Auburndale and their children Alexa and Lucas; and his daughter Karin (Locke) Wasler of Los Angeles. He is further survived by his brothers Dennis and Bill Schoen and sister Mary Leder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonhart and Amanda Schoen, sisters Jeanette Bielke and Joyce Strehlow, and Bunny, his wife of 55 years.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry would like his memory honored by donations to the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 13th at Nitardy Funeral Home, 550 N. Newcomb St., Whitewater. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service. A celebration of Jerry’s life will continue at the Cravath Lakefront Community Center following the service.

On a cool, crisp night in Wisconsin Dells the Whitewater Whippet cross country teams were able to finish off their regular season schedule on a high note. This meet is raced after sundown and contested under strategically placed flood lights to illuminate the course and Christmas lights on the sweeping turns and trees. There is no meet like this in the Midwest. There were over 40 teams that competed in the D1/D2 and D3 races throughout the night.
In near perfect race conditions, the girls got things started off first with nearly every girl running a new personal best. Gwen Truesdale paced the Whippets with a 54th place finish out of 151 runners. Her time of 23:38 is her best ever and her competitive edge is getting sharper by the day. Sabrina Bomberg also joined Gwen in the 23’s by running 23:55 and placed 62nd. Also dropping significant time were Morgan Stillwagon in 26:22, Jenny Villareal running 27:04, Jenna Lee 27:23, Izzy Dieter 27:40, Nikole Pelot 27:59, Jeanette Falcon 28:23, and Evie Troxel 28:04. The varsity girls placed 13th out of 14 teams in the D2 results.
The boys reflected the same improvements as a slew of runners earned a new personal best. Gio Anello paced the Whippets early with a hot start that helped propel him to a new level of racing. He was rewarded with new confidence going into championship time as he rubbed elbows with some strong runners. He finished in 9th with a time of 17:06. Trenten Zahn wouldn’t disappoint as he saw his way through the field and finished with vengeance to take 6th place in 16:51. Both boys earned a medal in the meet. Cooper Hammond cracked 18 minutes for the second time in 6 days as he ran 18:40. Not far back was Manny Rodriguez running 18:57. Will Hofmann rounded out the top 5 with a time of 19:14. Also cutting time off their personal best were Jack Mayer in 20:04, Marcus DePorter 20:49, Evan Schepp 20:55, Jaden Salmieri 20:56, Broderick Frye 21:07, Josiah Holden 21:55, Andy Vo 22:20, Justin Mitchell 25:20, and Andrew Rollette in 26:02. The team now takes the next week and a half to get ready for the championship phase of the season. The Rock Valley Conference Meet is being contested in Whitewater on the campus of UW-Whitewater on Thursday, October 17th. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team clinched its third consecutive conference title Sunday, 10/6, by winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Reedsburg Country Club in Reedsburg, Wis.
The Warhawks carded a WIAC Championship and UW-W program record 933 (314-314-305) for the tournament to best runner-up UW-Stout by eight strokes. It is the team’s fifth team championship in program history.
UW-Whitewater also claimed the WIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which is slated for May 12-15, 2020, at the PGA National Resort – Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. It will be the team’s third straight appearance in the national tournament.
Senior CheyAnn Knudsen tied her career best with a final-round 73 to complete a three-day total of 232 (76-83-73), good for third place out of 64 players.
Senior Ashley Hofmeister tied for fourth with a 233 (77-79-77), and senior Kristin Bowe finished sixth after recording a 236 (81-78-77), including a career-best tying 77 in Sunday’s final round.
Senior Kelly Storti also finished among the top 10 with a 238 (84-76-78), good for eighth place, and sophomore Ashton Sinak tied for 10th with a 240 (80-81-79).
Sophomore Lauren Winter finished fourth among individuals and 29th overall with a 262 (83-90-89), and sophomore Billie Jo Parker was 30th with a 263 (87-84-92).
Freshman Lily Sheppard tied for 33rd with a 266 (90-87-89), and freshman Madi LaPaz placed 56th with a 295 (98-101-96).
Saturday’s second round was suspended due to inclement weather and concluded on Sunday morning. The third and final round of the tournament was played Sunday afternoon.
UW-Whitewater’s three-peat is the first in school history and the third in conference history.
The Warhawks conclude the fall season starting next Sunday, Oct. 13, with the three-day Golfweek Division III Fall Invite at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Fla. The 54-hole tournament features many of the nation’s top teams.
