Eric Moyse Obituary Updated with Arrangements

Eric Moyse, 38, of Whitewater, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2021 at the Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin.

Eric was born on January 24, 1983 to Douglas E. Moyse and Irma I. Moyse.  Growing up in Cold Spring, WI, Eric enjoyed his youth spending countless hours swimming in the pool with his childhood friends and playing with his pets.

Eric attended Washington Grade School in Whitewater and took an early liking to music which he continued throughout his childhood years, through high school, playing in both the marching band and pep band.  He made a lot of friends through his years of band and cherished those friendships for years to come.  Academics always seemed to come easy to Eric; he enjoyed learning very much, graduating with honors in 2001 from Whitewater High School.

Eric was interested in many things, among them would be, spending time outdoors, fishing, camping, walking trails, foraging for mushrooms and metal detecting with one of his best friends, Tim Luebke.

He enjoyed playing video games with many of his closest friends and brother, Lance. He also spent a lot of his time reading and enjoyed all things Trivia related.

Eric is survived by his Mother, Irma Moyse; Brothers, Lance and Ryan Moyse (Tanya); aunts and uncles, Richard Moyse (Bonnie), Fred Alvarado (Sandi), Carmen Alvarado Wagie (Dale), Rachel Alvarado Hellen; along with loving cousins and other family, friends and his beloved cat, Walter.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Douglas Moyse; paternal grandparents, Earle and Alice (Talbert) Moyse; Maternal Grandparents, Federico and Josefina (Vasquez) Alvarado; and Uncle, Duane Moyse.

A memorial mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Whitewater.  A visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family will hold a private burial.

The family would like to give special thanks to all those providing care for Eric through Rainbow Hospice.  The care provided was exceptional for both Eric and Family.  We will be forever grateful for their assistance.

Nitardy funeral home is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences can be made at www.nitardyfuneralhome.com

UW-Whitewater LIFE program — first in the state — graduates six proud Warhawks

Six proud Warhawks, the first cohort of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s LIFE Program, successfully completed their two-year program and crossed the stage in cap and gown in May 2021.

LIFE, which stands for Learning Is For Everyone, is a program that provides a complete college experience for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 who have an intellectual disability. Students receive ample support programs, specialized instruction, on-campus residential living and community integration. It is the first and only program of its kind in the University of Wisconsin System, according to its director, James Collins.

“This is a group of students who had long been forgotten and excluded from the many opportunities college affords,” said Collins. “We’re redefining what a college education means and meeting significant needs in the community. Our program is personalized for our students, who get to participate in all aspects of campus life — from living in the residence halls to joining clubs like archery, gaming, and Active Minds.”

“Our UW-Whitewater LIFE students get access to everything that comes with the classic college experience, and rightfully so: they are Warhawks just like everybody else across campus.”

The program has two components: the two-year basic program and an advanced two-year program, designed to facilitate independent living and employment success, in addition to a variety of other essential skills and outcomes that align with a meaningful postsecondary education. The U.S. Department of Education has designated UW-Whitewater LIFE as being a Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Program, which makes students eligible for some forms of Federal financial aid, including Pell grants.

One of the hallmarks of the program is the required residence on campus, which helps dismantle barriers and creates substantive opportunities for students to fully participate in campus activities as it prepares students to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle, including regular exercise and participation in enjoyable leisure activities.

A trained, dedicated resident assistant lives in the residence hall with the students, helping them develop essential skills in non-academic domains. Called independent living assistants, these students, who come from a variety of majors, serve an important role in the program’s success and share many of the same responsibilities as a traditional campus resident assistant, but with additional supportive duties such as helping students with tasks of daily living, promoting independence, providing mentoring, facilitating social and leisure opportunities, and helping students acclimate to campus life.

One of the independent living assistants is Michala King, who earned a B.A. in social work this May.

“My mom did similar work with students with intellectual disabilities where I grew up,” said Michala. “It made me want to do it too — to be part of their academic journey, to help them gain independence and to see them gain confidence.”

“I really enjoyed working with these students over the last two years,” she added. “They have become a big part of my life.”

The first group of students to graduate the program are Nathan Barnes, from Racine, Sam Craden, from Menomonee Falls, Sera Lira, from Oshkosh, Alexis Orkfritz, from Baraboo, Amelia Pierson, from Oconomowoc, and Caitlin Salzeider, from Kenosha.

“Four of these students will be returning next year for the advanced program, and they’ll be moving from Tutt Hall to off-campus living to take their independence to the next level,” said Collins.

Game 1 went to Big Foot as the Whippets could only produce 3 hits and 3 runs, losing by a score of 7 to 3. Cheyenne Bohmann had 2 of the 3 hits and also drove in 1 run. Bohmann pitched the first five innings giving up 4 runs and departing with Whitewater down 4 to 2. Ashlynne Bohmann pitched the last inning, giving up 3 runs. The Whippets plated 1 more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Game 2 provided a lot of excitement. Whitewater took a 7 to 3 lead after two innings, as Shyan Lesperance hit an inside the park homerun to drive in 3 runs. Big Foot scored 7 runs in the third to take a 10 to 7 lead. Whitewater scored 2 in the bottom of the third to make the score 10 to 9. The game went back and forth with Big Foot leading 15 to 12 after six innings. Whitewater held Big Foot in check in the top of the seventh but was still down by three. Shyan Lesperance led off with a single and Cheyenne Bohmann was hit by a pitch. Lauren Buehler came in to run for Bohmann. With one out, Lexi Juoni doubled to leftfield to score Lesperance. With two outs, Nataly Benes lofted a flyball to right field which was dropped, allowing Buehler and Juoni to score to tie the game at 15. In extra innings, Big Foot scored two runs in the top of the 8th to take a 17 to 15 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Jenna Pope got things going with a single to right. Ashlynne Bohmann followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Makaylyn Benes came in to run for Bohmann. Three wild pitches by Big Foot’s pitcher allowed Pope and Benes to score, tying the game. Cheyenne Bohmann then got a base hit with one out. Lauren Buehler pinch ran and promptly stole second base. Cali Kopecky grounded out to short and Buehler scored all the way from second, catching Big Foot by surprise. The Whippets won a thriller 18 to 17. Cheyenne Bohmann was the winning pitcher in relief. Shyan Lesperance had the hot bat as she went 5 for 6 with 3 singles, a triple, and an inside the park homerun. She also scored 4 runs and drove in 3. Jenna Pope was 4 for 4 with three singles and a double. She also scored 2 runs and drove in 1.

The Whippets travel to Brodhead this Tuesday for a game against the Cardinals and then are home on Thursday against Evansville. Games start at 5:00 p.m.

Saturday Whitewater Lake Brat Fry and “Pop Up” Farmer’s Market to Benefit Police K-9

“Tilla’s Next Ride,” a group raising funds for a new Whitewater PD K-9 Unit vehicle, is
sponsoring a Brat Fry and “Pop-Up” Farmer’s Market Saturday (May 29) from 10 to 2 at the
corner of CTH P and Kettle Moraine Drive. Free spaces for vendors are still available by
contacting Sheila at 262 729-1121. Whitewater’s K-9 Officer Tilla will be the guest of honor.
Tilla needs a newer, larger dedicated police vehicle and all Brat Fry proceeds will go toward
that purchase. The group is planning a series of fund raisers throughout the summer and
over the next 18 months.

Whitewater’s Police K-9 unit relies on donations and is a community funded program. The
current squad dedicated to the K-9 unit is outdated and has an excess of accumulated
miles.

Saturday’s event is currently scheduled to feature Wisconsin summer sausage & beef
sticks, handmade jewelry, plinko wooden board games, skincare products, veggies &
canned goods, wax melts & diffusers, beeswax candles, bath & body products, key chains &
can koozies, CBD oils and much more!

The event will be held at the site of the old Whitewater Lake First Citizens Bank branch office across from
JNT’s Marina. Brats, hot dogs and beverages will be available.

Whippet Football Team Gives Thanks to La Piazza Pizzeria

The Whitewater Whippet Football Team would like to thank Owner/Chef Benny Spahijoski and his staff of La Piazza Pizzeria and Fanatico’s Italian Restaurant for their amazing support of the football team this year. After the varsity game against Monroe on Friday, April 16th, Chef Benny hosted the entire team of players, coaches, and managers for a meal of free pizza and drinks! Feeding an entire football team after a tough game is no small feat, but the team had a great time and really enjoyed the hospitality displayed by Benny and his staff.

After their team banquet this last Sunday night, a group of players went down to Fanatico’s and presented Benny with a signed game ball and picture collage as a thank you for his generous donation. On behalf of the Whippet Football Program, thank you once again for being a positive and supportive member of the community and our team!
